Sura 96: Al-‘Alaq (The Embryo) العلق

Sura 96 - Al-‘Alaq
In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[96:1] Read, in the name of your Lord, who created.*
ٱقْرَأْiq'raReadبِٱسْمِbi-is'miin (the) nameرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord.ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One whoخَلَقَkhalaqaHe created. ﴿١﴾
*96:1-19 From 96 to 114 is 19 suras. The first revelation (96:1-5) is 19 Arabic words, 76 letters (19x4). The sura consists of 19 verses and 304 Arabic letters (App. 1 & 23).
[96:2] He created man from an embryo.
خَلَقَkhalaqaHe createdٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe man / human beingمِنْminfromعَلَقٍʿalaqinan embryo. ﴿٢﴾
[96:3] Read, and your Lord, Most Exalted.
ٱقْرَأْiq'raRead,وَرَبُّكَwarabbukaand your Lord (is)ٱلْأَكْرَمُl-akramuthe Most Generous / Exalted, ﴿٣﴾
[96:4] Teaches by means of the pen.
ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe One whoعَلَّمَʿallamaHe taughtبِٱلْقَلَمِbil-qalamiby the pen. ﴿٤﴾
[96:5] He teaches man what he never knew.
عَلَّمَʿallamaHe taughtٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe man / human beingمَاwhatلَمْlamnotيَعْلَمْyaʿlamhe knows. ﴿٥﴾
[96:6] Indeed, the human transgresses.
كَلَّآkallāNay!إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe man / human beingلَيَطْغَىٰٓlayaṭghāsurely he transgresses. ﴿٦﴾
[96:7] When he becomes rich.
أَنanBecauseرَّءَاهُraāhuhe saw him(self)ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓis'taghnā[he considered himself] self-sufficient / rich. ﴿٧﴾
[96:8] To your Lord is the ultimate destiny.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,إِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord (is)ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓl-ruj'ʿāthe ultimate return (destiny). ﴿٨﴾
[96:9] Have you seen the one who enjoins.
أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoيَنْهَىٰyanhāhe prohibits / forbids. ﴿٩﴾
[96:10] Others from praying?
عَبْدًاʿabdanA servantإِذَاidhāwhenصَلَّىٰٓṣallāhe prayed? ﴿١٠﴾
[96:11] Is it not better for him to follow the guidance?
أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenإِنinifكَانَkānahe wasعَلَىʿalāuponٱلْهُدَىٰٓl-hudāthe guidance. ﴿١١﴾
[96:12] Or advocate righteousness?
أَوْawOrأَمَرَamarahe enjoined / commanded / advocatedبِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓbil-taqwāin the righteousness? ﴿١٢﴾
[96:13] If he disbelieves and turns away.
أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenإِنinifكَذَّبَkadhabahe denied / rejected / disbelievedوَتَوَلَّىٰٓwatawallāand he turned away? ﴿١٣﴾
[96:14] Does he not realize that GOD sees?
أَلَمْalamDoes notيَعْلَمyaʿlamhe knowبِأَنَّbi-annathatٱللَّهَl-lahaGodيَرَىٰyarāHe sees? ﴿١٤﴾
[96:15] Indeed, unless he refrains, we will take him by the forelock.
كَلَّاkallāNay!لَئِنla-inSurely ifلَّمْlamnotيَنتَهِyantahihe refrains,لَنَسْفَعًۢاlanasfaʿansurely we will drag (him)بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِbil-nāṣiyatiby the forelock. ﴿١٥﴾
[96:16] A forelock that is disbelieving and sinful.
نَاصِيَةٍnāṣiyatinA forelockكَـٰذِبَةٍkādhibatinlying / disbelieving,خَاطِئَةٍkhāṭi-atinsinful. ﴿١٦﴾
[96:17] Let him then call on his helpers.
فَلْيَدْعُfalyadʿuThen let him callنَادِيَهُۥnādiyahuhis participants / helpers. ﴿١٧﴾
[96:18] We will call the guardians of Hell.
سَنَدْعُsanadʿuWe will callٱلزَّبَانِيَةَl-zabāniyatathe brave defending guardians. ﴿١٨﴾
[96:19] You shall not obey him; you shall fall prostrate and draw nearer.
كَلَّاkallāNay!لَا(Do) notتُطِعْهُtuṭiʿ'huyou obey him.وَٱسْجُدْwa-us'judBut prostrateوَٱقْتَرِبwa-iq'tariband draw near. ﴿١٩﴾
