In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[50:1] Q., and the glorious Quran.*
قٓqafQ.وَٱلْقُرْءَانِwal-qur'āniAnd the Quran,ٱلْمَجِيدِl-majīdithe glorious. ﴿١﴾
*50:1 See Appendix 1 for the awesome miracles connected with the Initial Q (ق).
[50:2] They found it strange that a warner from among them came to them! The disbelievers said, "This is really strange.
بَلْbalNay,عَجِبُوٓا۟ʿajibūthey wondered / found strangeأَنanthatجَآءَهُمjāahum[he] came to themمُّنذِرٌmundhiruna warnerمِّنْهُمْmin'humfrom (among) them.فَقَالَfaqālaSo [he] saidٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers,هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)شَىْءٌshayona thing / matterعَجِيبٌʿajībunstrange. ﴿٢﴾
[50:3] "After we die and become dust; this is impossible."
أَءِذَاa-idhā"What! When [in the future]مِتْنَاmit'nāwe diedوَكُنَّاwakunnāand we becameتُرَابًاturābandust.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)رَجْعٌۢrajʿuna returnبَعِيدٌbaʿīdunfar off." ﴿٣﴾
[50:4] We are fully aware of any one of them who gets consumed by the earth; we have an accurate record.
قَدْqadAlreadyعَلِمْنَاʿalim'nāwe knewمَاmāwhatتَنقُصُtanquṣu[it] consumesٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthمِنْهُمْmin'humof them,وَعِندَنَاwaʿindanāand with us (is)كِتَـٰبٌkitābuna book / recordحَفِيظٌۢḥafīẓunguarded. ﴿٤﴾
[50:5] They rejected the truth when it came to them; they are utterly confused.
بَلْbalNay,كَذَّبُوا۟kadhabūthey denied / rejectedبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truthلَمَّاlammāwhenجَآءَهُمْjāahumit came to them,فَهُمْfahumso they (are)فِىٓfīinأَمْرٍamrina matterمَّرِيجٍmarījinconfused. ﴿٥﴾
[50:6] Have they not looked at the sky above them, and how we constructed it and adorned it, without a flaw?
أَفَلَمْafalamThen do notيَنظُرُوٓا۟yanẓurūthey lookإِلَىilāatٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe skyفَوْقَهُمْfawqahumabove themكَيْفَkayfahowبَنَيْنَـٰهَاbanaynāhāwe constructed itوَزَيَّنَّـٰهَاwazayyannāhāand we adorned itوَمَاwamāand notلَهَاlahāfor itمِنminanyفُرُوجٍfurūjinrifts / split / glitch (flaw)? ﴿٦﴾
[50:7] And we created the earth, and scattered on it mountains, and grew in it all kinds of beautiful plants.
وَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaAnd the earth,مَدَدْنَـٰهَاmadadnāhāwe spread it out / laid it outوَأَلْقَيْنَاwa-alqaynāand [we] cast / threw (scattered)فِيهَاfīhāthereinرَوَٰسِىَrawāsiyastabilizers (*mountains)وَأَنۢبَتْنَاwa-anbatnāand we caused to growفِيهَاfīhāthereinمِنminofكُلِّkullieveryزَوْجٍۭzawjinkindبَهِيجٍbahījinbeautiful plant. ﴿٧﴾
[50:8] This is an enlightenment, and a reminder for every pious worshiper.
تَبْصِرَةًtabṣiratanAn enlightenmentوَذِكْرَىٰwadhik'rāand a reminderلِكُلِّlikullifor everyعَبْدٍʿabdinworshiperمُّنِيبٍmunībinone who is pious / turns (to God) in repentance repeatedly with sincere deeds. ﴿٨﴾
[50:9] And we sent from the sky blessed water, to grow with it gardens and grains to be harvested.
وَنَزَّلْنَاwanazzalnāAnd we sent downمِنَminafromٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe skyمَآءًmāanwater (to)مُّبَـٰرَكًاmubārakana blessed place,فَأَنۢبَتْنَاfa-anbatnāthen we caused to growبِهِۦbihitherebyجَنَّـٰتٍjannātingardensوَحَبَّwaḥabbaand grainٱلْحَصِيدِl-ḥaṣīdi(for) the harvest. ﴿٩﴾
[50:10] Tall date palms, with clustered fruit.
وَٱلنَّخْلَwal-nakhlaAnd the date-palmsبَاسِقَـٰتٍbāsiqātintallلَّهَاlahāfor itطَلْعٌṭalʿunclustered / fruitنَّضِيدٌnaḍīduncluster over cluster. ﴿١٠﴾
[50:11] Provisions for the people. And we revive with it dead lands; you are similarly resurrected.
رِّزْقًاriz'qanA provisionلِّلْعِبَادِlil'ʿibādifor the servants / people,وَأَحْيَيْنَاwa-aḥyaynāand we gave lifeبِهِۦbihitherewithبَلْدَةًbaldatan(to) a landمَّيْتًاmaytandead.كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThus / Likewiseٱلْخُرُوجُl-khurūju[the] bringing out (resurrection). ﴿١١﴾
[50:12] Disbelieving before them were the people of Noah, the dwellers of Russ, and Thamûd.
كَذَّبَتْkadhabat[It] denied / disbelievedقَبْلَهُمْqablahumbefore themقَوْمُqawmu(the) people (of)نُوحٍnūḥinNoahوَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuand (the) companions / dwellers (of)ٱلرَّسِّl-rasiAl-Russوَثَمُودُwathamūduand Thamud. ﴿١٢﴾
[50:13] And 'Ãd, Pharaoh, and the brethren of Lot.
وَعَادٌwaʿādunAnd Adوَفِرْعَوْنُwafir'ʿawnuand Pharaohوَإِخْوَٰنُwa-ikh'wānuand (the) brothers / brethren (of)لُوطٍlūṭinLot. ﴿١٣﴾
[50:14] And the dwellers of the woods, and the people of Tubba'. All of them disbelieved the messengers and, consequently, My retribution befell them.
وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuAnd (the) companions / dwellers (of)ٱلْأَيْكَةِl-aykatithe Woodsوَقَوْمُwaqawmuand (the) people (of)تُبَّعٍtubbaʿinTubba.كُلٌّkullunAllكَذَّبَkadhabait denied / disbelievedٱلرُّسُلَl-rusulathe messengers,فَحَقَّfaḥaqqaso [it] was fulfilledوَعِيدِwaʿīdiMy threat / warning (retribution). ﴿١٤﴾
[50:15] Were we too burdened by the first creation? Is this why they doubt resurrection?
أَفَعَيِينَاafaʿayīnāWere we then tired / burdenedبِٱلْخَلْقِbil-khalqiwith the creationٱلْأَوَّلِl-awalithe first?بَلْbalNay,هُمْhumthey (are)فِىfīinلَبْسٍlabsinconfusion (doubt)مِّنْminaboutخَلْقٍkhalqina creationجَدِيدٍjadīdinanew. ﴿١٥﴾
[50:16] We created the human, and we know what he whispers to himself. We are closer to him than his jugular vein.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe humanوَنَعْلَمُwanaʿlamuand we knowمَاmāwhatتُوَسْوِسُtuwaswisuit whispersبِهِۦbihito himنَفْسُهُۥnafsuhuhimself,وَنَحْنُwanaḥnuand we (are)أَقْرَبُaqrabunearer / closerإِلَيْهِilayhito himمِنْminthanحَبْلِḥablirope / vein / jugularٱلْوَرِيدِl-warīdithe jugular vein. ﴿١٦﴾
[50:17] Two recording (angels), at right and at left, are constantly recording.
إِذْidhWhenيَتَلَقَّىyatalaqqāhe receivesٱلْمُتَلَقِّيَانِl-mutalaqiyānithe two receivers (recording)عَنِʿanifromٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīnithe rightوَعَنِwaʿaniand onٱلشِّمَالِl-shimālithe leftقَعِيدٌqaʿīdunseated. ﴿١٧﴾
[50:18] Not an utterance does he utter without an alert witness.
مَّاmāNotيَلْفِظُyalfiẓuhe uttersمِنminanyقَوْلٍqawlinwordإِلَّاillābutلَدَيْهِladayhiwith him (is)رَقِيبٌraqībuna watcherعَتِيدٌʿatīdunready. ﴿١٨﴾
[50:19] Finally, the inevitable coma of death comes; this is what you tried to evade.
وَجَآءَتْwajāatAnd [it] (will) come / arriveسَكْرَةُsakratu(the) intoxication / coma (of)ٱلْمَوْتِl-mawti[the] deathبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truth (*truthfully),ذَٰلِكَdhālika"Thatمَاmā(is) whatكُنتَkuntayou wereمِنْهُmin'hufrom itتَحِيدُtaḥīdu[you] avoiding." ﴿١٩﴾
[50:20] The horn is blown; this is the promised day.
وَنُفِخَwanufikhaAnd it (will be) blownفِىfīinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe horn.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)يَوْمُyawmu(the) Day (of)ٱلْوَعِيدِl-waʿīdithe promise / warning / prophecy. ﴿٢٠﴾
[50:21] Every soul comes with a herder and a witness.
وَجَآءَتْwajāatAnd [it] (will) comeكُلُّkullueveryنَفْسٍnafsinsoul,مَّعَهَاmaʿahāwith itسَآئِقٌsāiquna herderوَشَهِيدٌwashahīdunand a witness. ﴿٢١﴾
[50:22] You used to be oblivious to this. We now remove your veil; today, your vision is (as strong as) steel.
لَّقَدْlaqad"Certainlyكُنتَkuntayou wereفِىfīinغَفْلَةٍghaflatinheedlessness / obliviousمِّنْminofهَـٰذَاhādhāthis.فَكَشَفْنَاfakashafnāSo we removedعَنكَʿankafrom youغِطَآءَكَghiṭāakayour veil,فَبَصَرُكَfabaṣarukaso your visionٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatoday (is)حَدِيدٌḥadīdunsharp / steel." ﴿٢٢﴾
[50:23] The companion said, "Here is my formidable testimony."*
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd [he] saidقَرِينُهُۥqarīnuhuhis companion,هَـٰذَاhādhā"Thisمَاmā(is) whatلَدَىَّladayya(is) with meعَتِيدٌʿatīdunready / prepared." ﴿٢٣﴾
*50:23-28 Your life-time companion witnesses everything you do. See Appendix 7.
[50:24] Throw into Gehenna every stubborn disbeliever.
أَلْقِيَاalqiyāThrowفِىfīintoجَهَنَّمَjahannamaHellكُلَّkullaeveryكَفَّارٍkaffārindisbelieverعَنِيدٍʿanīdinstubborn. ﴿٢٤﴾
[50:25] Forbidder of charity, aggressor, full of doubt.
مَّنَّاعٍmannāʿinForbidderلِّلْخَيْرِlil'khayriof the good,مُعْتَدٍmuʿ'tadintransgressor / aggressorمُّرِيبٍmurībindoubter / doubtful. ﴿٢٥﴾
[50:26] He set up besides GOD another god. Throw him into severe retribution.
ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe one whoجَعَلَjaʿalahe madeمَعَmaʿawithٱللَّهِl-lahiGodإِلَـٰهًاilāhana godءَاخَرَākharaanother;فَأَلْقِيَاهُfa-alqiyāhuso throw himفِىfīintoٱلْعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe retributionٱلشَّدِيدِl-shadīdithe severe. ﴿٢٦﴾
[50:27] His companion said, "Our Lord, I did not mislead him; he was far astray."
قَالَqālaHe saidقَرِينُهُۥqarīnuhuhis companion,رَبَّنَاrabbanā"Our Lord,مَآmānotأَطْغَيْتُهُۥaṭghaytuhuI made him transgress,وَلَـٰكِنwalākinbutكَانَkānahe wasفِىfīinضَلَـٰلٍۭḍalālinastrayبَعِيدٍbaʿīdinfar." ﴿٢٧﴾
[50:28] He said, "Do not feud in front of Me; I have sufficiently warned you.
قَالَqālaHe said,لَاlā"(Do) notتَخْتَصِمُوا۟takhtaṣimūyou [all] feudلَدَىَّladayya(in) My presenceوَقَدْwaqadand indeed,قَدَّمْتُqaddamtuI sent forthإِلَيْكُمilaykumto you [all]بِٱلْوَعِيدِbil-waʿīdi[in] the promise / prophecy / warning. ﴿٢٨﴾
[50:29] "Nothing can be changed now. I am never unjust towards the people."
مَاmā"Notيُبَدَّلُyubaddalu[it] will be changedٱلْقَوْلُl-qawluthe wordلَدَىَّladayyawith Me,وَمَآwamāand notأَنَا۠anāI amبِظَلَّـٰمٍbiẓallāminever unjustلِّلْعَبِيدِlil'ʿabīdito the servants / people." ﴿٢٩﴾
[50:30] That is the day when we ask Hell, "Have you had enough?" It will say, "Give me more."
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayنَقُولُnaqūluwe will sayلِجَهَنَّمَlijahannamato Hell,هَلِhali"Areٱمْتَلَأْتِim'talatiyou filled?"وَتَقُولُwataqūluAnd it will say,هَلْhal"Areمِنmin(there) anyمَّزِيدٍmazīdinmore?" ﴿٣٠﴾
[50:31] Paradise will be offered to the righteous, readily.
وَأُزْلِفَتِwa-uz'lifatiAnd [it] was brought nearٱلْجَنَّةُl-janatuthe Paradiseلِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous [ones],غَيْرَghayranotبَعِيدٍbaʿīdinfar. ﴿٣١﴾
[50:32] This is what was promised to every repenter, steadfast.
هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)مَاmāwhatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou [all] are promised,لِكُلِّlikullifor everyoneأَوَّابٍawwābin(who) [he] turned (from disobedience to obedience) / repentedحَفِيظٍḥafīẓin(and who) [he] guarded / attentive / persevered (steadfast). ﴿٣٢﴾
[50:33] They reverenced the Most Gracious, in their privacy, and came wholeheartedly.
مَّنْmanWhoخَشِىَkhashiyahe reverencedٱلرَّحْمَـٰنَl-raḥmāna(the) Most Graciousبِٱلْغَيْبِbil-ghaybiin the unseen / privacy,وَجَآءَwajāaand he cameبِقَلْبٍbiqalbinwith a heartمُّنِيبٍmunībinone who is pious / obedient / turns (to God) in repentance repeatedly with sincere deeds. ﴿٣٣﴾
[50:34] Enter it in peace; this is the Day of Eternity.
ٱدْخُلُوهَاud'khulūhāEnter it [you all]بِسَلَـٰمٍbisalāminin peace.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)يَوْمُyawmua Day (of)ٱلْخُلُودِl-khulūdi[the] Eternity. ﴿٣٤﴾
[50:35] They get anything they wish therein, and we have even more.
لَهُمlahumFor themمَّاmāwhateverيَشَآءُونَyashāūnathey wishفِيهَاfīhāthereinوَلَدَيْنَاwaladaynāand with usمَزِيدٌmazīdun(is) more. ﴿٣٥﴾
[50:36] Many a generation before them, who were more powerful, we annihilated. They searched the land; did they find an escape?
وَكَمْwakamAnd how manyأَهْلَكْنَاahlaknāwe destroyed / annihilatedقَبْلَهُمqablahumbefore themمِّنminofقَرْنٍqarnina generation,هُمْhumtheyأَشَدُّashaddu(were) strongerمِنْهُمmin'humthan themبَطْشًاbaṭshan(in) power.فَنَقَّبُوا۟fanaqqabūSo they searchedفِىfīinٱلْبِلَـٰدِl-bilādithe land.هَلْhalIs (there)مِنminanyمَّحِيصٍmaḥīṣinplace of escape? ﴿٣٦﴾
[50:37] This should be a lesson for everyone who possesses a mind, or is able to hear and witness.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,فِىfīinذَٰلِكَdhālikathat (is)لَذِكْرَىٰladhik'rāsurely a reminderلِمَنlimanfor (anyone) whoكَانَkānait wasلَهُۥlahufor himقَلْبٌqalbuna heart / mindأَوْaworأَلْقَىalqāhe casted / offeredٱلسَّمْعَl-samʿathe hearingوَهُوَwahuwaand he (is)شَهِيدٌshahīduna witness. ﴿٣٧﴾
[50:38] We have created the heavens and the earth, and everything between them in six days, and no fatigue touched us.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly,خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earthوَمَاwamāand whatever (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of themفِىfīinسِتَّةِsittatisixأَيَّامٍayyāmindays,وَمَاwamāand (did) notمَسَّنَاmassanāit touched usمِنminanyلُّغُوبٍlughūbinweariness / fatigue. ﴿٣٨﴾
[50:39] Therefore, be patient in the face of their utterances, and praise and glorify your Lord before sunrise, and before sunset.
فَٱصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birSo be patientعَلَىٰʿalāoverمَاmāwhatيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey sayوَسَبِّحْwasabbiḥand glorifyبِحَمْدِbiḥamdiin praise (of)رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord,قَبْلَqablabeforeطُلُوعِṭulūʿi(the) rising (of)ٱلشَّمْسِl-shamsithe sunوَقَبْلَwaqablaand beforeٱلْغُرُوبِl-ghurūbithe setting. ﴿٣٩﴾
[50:40] During the night you shall meditate on His name, and after prostrating.
وَمِنَwaminaAnd uponٱلَّيْلِal-laylithe nightفَسَبِّحْهُfasabbiḥ'huso glorify Himوَأَدْبَـٰرَwa-adbāraand afterٱلسُّجُودِl-sujūdithe prostration. ﴿٤٠﴾
[50:41] Prepare for the day when the caller calls from a place that is near.
وَٱسْتَمِعْwa-is'tamiʿAnd listen!يَوْمَyawma(The) DayيُنَادِyunādiHe will callٱلْمُنَادِl-munādithe callerمِنminfromمَّكَانٍmakānina placeقَرِيبٍqarībinnear. ﴿٤١﴾
[50:42] When they hear the inevitable cry; that is the day you come out.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnathey hearٱلصَّيْحَةَl-ṣayḥatathe cryبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truth (*truthfully).ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)يَوْمُyawmu(the) Day (of)ٱلْخُرُوجِl-khurūjithe bringing out. ﴿٤٢﴾
[50:43] We are the ones who control life and death; to us is the final destiny.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]نَحْنُnaḥnuweنُحْىِۦnuḥ'yī[we] give lifeوَنُمِيتُwanumītuand we cause death,وَإِلَيْنَاwa-ilaynāand to us (is)ٱلْمَصِيرُl-maṣīruthe final place of return / final destiny. ﴿٤٣﴾
[50:44] The day will come when the earth cracks in a hurry, giving rise to them. Such summoning is easy for us to do.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayتَشَقَّقُtashaqqaqu[it] will split open (crack)ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthعَنْهُمْʿanhumfrom them,سِرَاعًاsirāʿanhurrying.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)حَشْرٌḥashruna summoningعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāfor usيَسِيرٌyasīruneasy. ﴿٤٤﴾
[50:45] We are fully aware of everything they utter, while you have no power over them. Therefore, remind with this Quran, those who reverence My warnings.
نَّحْنُnaḥnuWeأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknow bestبِمَاbimāof whatيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say,وَمَآwamāand notأَنتَantayou (are)عَلَيْهِمʿalayhimover themبِجَبَّارٍbijabbārinever one who has power / tyrant.فَذَكِّرْfadhakkirBut remindبِٱلْقُرْءَانِbil-qur'āniwith the Quranمَنmanwhoeverيَخَافُyakhāfuhe fears / reverenceوَعِيدِwaʿīdiMy promise / threat / warning. ﴿٤٥﴾
