In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[90:1] I solemnly swear by this town.
لَآlāNay!أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swearبِهَـٰذَاbihādhāby thisٱلْبَلَدِl-baladi[the] town. ﴿١﴾
[90:2] The town where you live.
وَأَنتَwa-antaAnd youحِلٌّۢḥillunlawful / residentبِهَـٰذَاbihādhāin thisٱلْبَلَدِl-baladi[the] town. ﴿٢﴾
[90:3] The begetting and the begotten.
وَوَالِدٍwawālidinAnd (the) begettingوَمَاwamāand whatوَلَدَwaladait begot. ﴿٣﴾
[90:4] We created the human being to work hard (to redeem himself).*
لَقَدْlaqadCertainly,خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe human beingفِىfīfor the sake of كَبَدٍkabadinhardship / to struggle against difficulties. ﴿٤﴾

[90:5] Does he think that no one will ever call him to account?
أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he thinkأَنanthatلَّنlannotيَقْدِرَyaqdira[he] has powerعَلَيْهِʿalayhiover himأَحَدٌaḥadunanyone? ﴿٥﴾
[90:6] He boasts, "I spent so much money!"
يَقُولُyaqūluHe says,أَهْلَكْتُahlaktu"I squandered / wastedمَالًاmālanwealthلُّبَدًاlubadanvast / much." ﴿٦﴾
[90:7] Does he think that no one sees him?
أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he thinkأَنanthatلَّمْlamnotيَرَهُۥٓyarahu[he] sees himأَحَدٌaḥadunanyone? ﴿٧﴾
[90:8] Did we not give him two eyes?
أَلَمْalamDid notنَجْعَلnajʿalwe makeلَّهُۥlahufor himعَيْنَيْنِʿaynaynitwo eyes? ﴿٨﴾
[90:9] A tongue and two lips?
وَلِسَانًاwalisānanAnd a tongue,وَشَفَتَيْنِwashafatayniand two lips? ﴿٩﴾
[90:10] Did we not show him the two paths?
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُwahadaynāhuAnd we guided him (to)ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِl-najdaynithe two paths? ﴿١٠﴾
[90:11] He should choose the difficult path.
فَلَاfalāBut no,ٱقْتَحَمَiq'taḥamahe should attempt the uphill path ٱلْعَقَبَةَl-ʿaqabatathe steep / difficult path. ﴿١١﴾
[90:12] Which one is the difficult path?
وَمَآwamāAnd what*أَدْرَىٰكَadrākait can make you know (*do you know)مَاmāwhat (is)ٱلْعَقَبَةُl-ʿaqabatuthe steep / difficult path? ﴿١٢﴾
[90:13] The freeing of slaves.
فَكُّfakku(It is) freeingرَقَبَةٍraqabatina [female] slave. ﴿١٣﴾
[90:14] Feeding, during the time of hardship.
أَوْawOrإِطْعَـٰمٌiṭ'ʿāmunfeedingفِىfīinيَوْمٍyawmina dayذِىdhīofمَسْغَبَةٍmasghabatinsevere hunger. ﴿١٤﴾
[90:15] Orphans who are related.
يَتِيمًاyatīmanAn orphanذَاdhāofمَقْرَبَةٍmaqrabatinnear relationship / related. ﴿١٥﴾
[90:16] Or the poor who is in need.
أَوْawOrمِسْكِينًاmis'kīnan(the) poorذَاdhāinمَتْرَبَةٍmatrabatinmisery / poverty. ﴿١٦﴾
[90:17] And being one of those who believe, and exhorting one another to be steadfast, and exhorting one another to be kind.
ثُمَّthummaThenكَانَkānahe wasمِنَminaofٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanū[they] believedوَتَوَاصَوْا۟watawāṣawand they enjoined / exhortedبِٱلصَّبْرِbil-ṣabriin the steadfastness,وَتَوَاصَوْا۟watawāṣawand [they] enjoined / exhortedبِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِbil-marḥamatiin the kindness. ﴿١٧﴾
[90:18] These have deserved happiness.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābucompanions (of)ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِl-maymanatithe blessed / right side. ﴿١٨﴾
[90:19] As for those who disbelieved in our revelations, they have incurred misery.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināin our verses / revelations,هُمْhumtheyأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābucompanions (of)ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِl-mashamatithe misery. ﴿١٩﴾
[90:20] They will be confined in the Hellfire.
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimOver them,نَارٌnārun(will be the) Fireمُّؤْصَدَةٌۢmu'ṣadatunclosed in / confined. ﴿٢٠﴾
