In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[89:1] By the dawn.
وَٱلْفَجْرِwal-fajriBy the dawn. ﴿١﴾
[89:2] And the ten nights. *
وَلَيَالٍwalayālinAnd (the) nightsعَشْرٍʿashrinten. ﴿٢﴾
*89:2 Last ten nights of Ramadan, wherein many believers retreat to the masjids (2:187).
[89:3] By the even and the odd. *
وَٱلشَّفْعِwal-shafʿiBy the evenوَٱلْوَتْرِwal-watriand the odd. ﴿٣﴾

[89:4] By the night as it passes.
وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightإِذَاidhāwhenيَسْرِyasriit passes. ﴿٤﴾
[89:5] A profound oath, for one who possesses intelligence.
هَلْhalIsفِىfīinذَٰلِكَdhālikathatقَسَمٌqasamun(not) an oathلِّذِىlidhīfor a possessor of حِجْرٍḥij'rinintelligence? ﴿٥﴾
[89:6] Have you noted what your Lord did to 'Ãd?
أَلَمْalamDid notتَرَtarayou seeكَيْفَkayfahowفَعَلَfaʿala[He] dealtرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordبِعَادٍbiʿādinwith Ad. ﴿٦﴾
[89:7] Erum; the town with tall buildings.
إِرَمَiramaErum,ذَاتِdhātiit possessingٱلْعِمَادِl-ʿimādi[the] lofty pillars / tall buildings. ﴿٧﴾
[89:8] There was nothing like it anywhere.
ٱلَّتِىallatīWhichلَمْlamnotيُخْلَقْyukh'laqit is createdمِثْلُهَاmith'luhālike themفِىfīinٱلْبِلَـٰدِl-bilādithe land. ﴿٨﴾
[89:9] Also Thamûd, who carved the rocks in their valley.
وَثَمُودَwathamūdaAnd Thamud,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathe ones whoجَابُوا۟jābūthey carved outٱلصَّخْرَl-ṣakhrathe rocksبِٱلْوَادِbil-wādiin the valley. ﴿٩﴾
[89:10] And Pharaoh who possessed might.
وَفِرْعَوْنَwafir'ʿawnaAnd Pharaoh,ذِىdhīpossessor ofٱلْأَوْتَادِl-awtādithe stakes? ﴿١٠﴾
[89:11] They all transgressed in the land.
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThe ones whoطَغَوْا۟ṭaghawthey transgressedفِىfīinٱلْبِلَـٰدِl-bilādithe land. ﴿١١﴾
[89:12] They spread evil throughout.
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟fa-aktharūAnd they increased / made excessiveفِيهَاfīhāthereinٱلْفَسَادَl-fasāda[the] corruption / evil. ﴿١٢﴾
[89:13] Consequently, your Lord poured upon them a whipping retribution.
فَصَبَّfaṣabbaSo He pouredعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimon themرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordسَوْطَsawṭaa whippingعَذَابٍʿadhābinretribution. ﴿١٣﴾
[89:14] Your Lord is ever watchful.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,رَبَّكَrabbakayour Lordلَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِlabil-mir'ṣādisurely on the watch. ﴿١٤﴾
[89:15] When the human being is tested by his Lord, through blessings and joy, he says, "My Lord is generous towards me."
فَأَمَّاfa-ammāAnd as forٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe human being,إِذَاidhāwhenمَاmā[that]ٱبْتَلَىٰهُib'talāhu[He] tested himرَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lordفَأَكْرَمَهُۥfa-akramahuand He was generous to himوَنَعَّمَهُۥwanaʿʿamahuand He blessed him,فَيَقُولُfayaqūluthen he says,رَبِّىٓrabbī"My LordأَكْرَمَنِakramaniHe honored / was generous to me." ﴿١٥﴾
[89:16] But if He tests him through reduction in provisions, he says, "My Lord is humiliating me!"
وَأَمَّآwa-ammāBut ifإِذَاidhāwhenمَاmā[that]ٱبْتَلَىٰهُib'talāhuHe tested himفَقَدَرَfaqadarathen He restrictedعَلَيْهِʿalayhifor himرِزْقَهُۥriz'qahuhis provision,فَيَقُولُfayaqūluthen he saysرَبِّىٓrabbī"My LordأَهَـٰنَنِahānaniHe humiliated / disgraced me." ﴿١٦﴾
[89:17] Wrong! It is you who brought it on yourselves by not regarding the orphan.
كَلَّاkallāNay!بَلbalButلَّاlānotتُكْرِمُونَtuk'rimūnayou [all] honor / regardٱلْيَتِيمَl-yatīmathe orphan. ﴿١٧﴾
[89:18] And not advocating charity towards the poor.
وَلَاwalāAnd notتَحَـٰٓضُّونَtaḥāḍḍūnayou [all] incite one another / advocateعَلَىٰʿalātoطَعَامِṭaʿāmifeedٱلْمِسْكِينِl-mis'kīnithe poor. ﴿١٨﴾
[89:19] And consuming the inheritance of helpless orphans.
وَتَأْكُلُونَwatakulūnaAnd you [all] consumeٱلتُّرَاثَl-turāthathe inheritanceأَكْلًاaklandevouringلَّمًّاlammanwholly and indiscriminately / greedily. ﴿١٩﴾
[89:20] And loving the money too much.
وَتُحِبُّونَwatuḥibbūnaAnd you [all] loveٱلْمَالَl-māla[the] wealthحُبًّاḥubban(with) loveجَمًّاjammanimmense / too much. ﴿٢٠﴾
[89:21] Indeed, when the earth is crushed, utterly crushed.
كَلَّآkallāNay!إِذَاidhāWhen [in the future]دُكَّتِdukkati[it] (will be) crushed / grounded / made to crumble to pieces*ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earth,دَكًّاdakkancrushed / crumble / powder / dust*دَكًّاdakkancrushed / crumble / powder / dust (*crushed, utterly crushed). ﴿٢١﴾
[89:22] And your Lord comes, together with the angels in row after row.
وَجَآءَwajāaAnd [He] (will) comeرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordوَٱلْمَلَكُwal-malakuand the angels,صَفًّاṣaffanrank / row / line,صَفًّاṣaffan(upon) rank / row / line ﴿٢٢﴾
[89:23] On that day, Gehenna will be brought forth. On that day, the human being will remember - but what a remembrance - it will be too late.
وَجِا۟ىٓءَwajīaAnd it (will be) brought,يَوْمَئِذٍۭyawma-idhinthat day,بِجَهَنَّمَbijahannama[in] Gehenna.يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinThat Dayيَتَذَكَّرُyatadhakkaru[he] will rememberٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe human being,وَأَنَّىٰwa-annābut howلَهُlahu(will be) for himٱلذِّكْرَىٰl-dhik'rāthe remembrance? ﴿٢٣﴾
[89:24] He will say, "Oh, I wish I prepared for my (eternal) life."
يَقُولُyaqūluHe will say,يَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanī"Oh, I wish (that)قَدَّمْتُqaddamtuI preparedلِحَيَاتِىliḥayātīfor my life." ﴿٢٤﴾
[89:25] On that day, no retribution could be worse than His retribution.
فَيَوْمَئِذٍfayawma-idhinSo that Dayلَّاlānotيُعَذِّبُyuʿadhibu[he] punishes,عَذَابَهُۥٓʿadhābahu(as) His punishment / retributionأَحَدٌaḥadunanyone. ﴿٢٥﴾
[89:26] And no confinement is as effective as His confinement.
وَلَاwalāAnd notيُوثِقُyūthiquhe will bind / confineوَثَاقَهُۥٓwathāqahu(as) His binding / confinementأَحَدٌaḥadunanyone. ﴿٢٦﴾
[89:27] As for you, O content soul.
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَاyāayyatuhā"O youٱلنَّفْسُl-nafsu[the] soulٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُl-muṭ'ma-inatuthe satisfied / content one. ﴿٢٧﴾
[89:28] Return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing.
ٱرْجِعِىٓir'jiʿīReturnإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكِrabbikiyour Lordرَاضِيَةًrāḍiyatanhappy / pleased,مَّرْضِيَّةًmarḍiyyatan(and) happily / pleasing. ﴿٢٨﴾
[89:29] Welcome into My servants.
فَٱدْخُلِىfa-ud'khulīSo enterفِىfīamongعِبَـٰدِىʿibādīMy servants, ﴿٢٩﴾
[89:30] Welcome into My Paradise.
وَٱدْخُلِىwa-ud'khulīAnd enterجَنَّتِىjannatīMy Paradise." ﴿٣٠﴾
