In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[88:1] Are you aware of the Overwhelming?
هَلْhalHasأَتَىٰكَatāka[it] came to youحَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) narration / account (of)ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِl-ghāshiyatithe Overwhelming? ﴿١﴾
[88:2] Faces on that day will be shamed.
وُجُوهٌwujūhunFacesيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat dayخَـٰشِعَةٌkhāshiʿatun(will be) humbled / shamed. ﴿٢﴾
[88:3] Laboring and exhausted.
عَامِلَةٌʿāmilatunLaboring,نَّاصِبَةٌnāṣibatunexhausted. ﴿٣﴾
[88:4] Suffering in a blazing Hellfire.
تَصْلَىٰtaṣlāIt will burnنَارًاnāran(in) a Fireحَامِيَةًḥāmiyatanblazing. ﴿٤﴾
[88:5] Drinking from a flaming spring.
تُسْقَىٰtus'qāIt given to drinkمِنْminfromعَيْنٍʿaynina springءَانِيَةٍāniyatinboiling / flaming. ﴿٥﴾
[88:6] They will have no food except the useless variety.
لَّيْسَlaysaNot isلَهُمْlahumfor themطَعَامٌṭaʿāmunfoodإِلَّاillāexceptمِنminfromضَرِيعٍḍarīʿina bitter thorny plant. ﴿٦﴾
[88:7] It never nourishes, nor satisfies hunger.
لَّاlāNotيُسْمِنُyus'minuit nourishesوَلَاwalāand notيُغْنِىyugh'nīit availsمِنminfromجُوعٍjūʿinhunger. ﴿٧﴾
[88:8] Other faces on that day will be full of joy.
وُجُوهٌwujūhunFacesيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat dayنَّاعِمَةٌnāʿimatun(will be) joyful. ﴿٨﴾
[88:9] Satisfied with their work.
لِّسَعْيِهَاlisaʿyihāWith its effort / workرَاضِيَةٌrāḍiyatunhappy / satisfied. ﴿٩﴾
[88:10] In an exalted Paradise.
فِىfīInجَنَّةٍjannatina Paradiseعَالِيَةٍʿāliyatinelevated / exalted. ﴿١٠﴾
[88:11] In it, no nonsense is heard.
لَّاlāNotتَسْمَعُtasmaʿu[you] will hearفِيهَاfīhāthereinلَـٰغِيَةًlāghiyatanvain talk / nonsense. ﴿١١﴾
[88:12] In it, a spring flows.
فِيهَاfīhāIn it,عَيْنٌʿaynuna springجَارِيَةٌjāriyatunflowing. ﴿١٢﴾
[88:13] In it, there are luxurious furnishings.
فِيهَاfīhāThereinسُرُرٌsururun(will be) thrones / luxurious furnishingsمَّرْفُوعَةٌmarfūʿatunraised high. ﴿١٣﴾
[88:14] And drinks made available.
وَأَكْوَابٌwa-akwābunAnd cupsمَّوْضُوعَةٌmawḍūʿatunput in place. ﴿١٤﴾
[88:15] And pitchers in rows.
وَنَمَارِقُwanamāriquAnd cushions / pitchersمَصْفُوفَةٌmaṣfūfatunlined up / arranged in order / in rows. ﴿١٥﴾
[88:16] And carpets throughout.
وَزَرَابِىُّwazarābiyyuAnd carpetsمَبْثُوثَةٌmabthūthatunspread out. ﴿١٦﴾
[88:17] Why do they not reflect on the camels and how they are created?
أَفَلَاafalāThen do notيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnathey lookإِلَىilātoٱلْإِبِلِl-ibilithe camels,كَيْفَkayfahowخُلِقَتْkhuliqatit was created? ﴿١٧﴾
[88:18] And the sky and how it is raised.
وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towardsٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky,كَيْفَkayfahowرُفِعَتْrufiʿatit was raised? ﴿١٨﴾
[88:19] And the mountains and how they are constructed.
وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towardsٱلْجِبَالِl-jibālithe mountains,كَيْفَkayfahowنُصِبَتْnuṣibatit was fixed / setup (constructed)? ﴿١٩﴾
[88:20] And the earth and how it is built.
وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towardsٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth,كَيْفَkayfahowسُطِحَتْsuṭiḥatit was spread out / expanded / stretched (built)? ﴿٢٠﴾
[88:21] You shall remind, for your mission is to deliver this reminder.
فَذَكِّرْfadhakkirSo remind,إِنَّمَآinnamāonlyأَنتَantayou (are)مُذَكِّرٌmudhakkirunone who reminds. ﴿٢١﴾
[88:22] You have no power over them.
لَّسْتَlastaYou (are) notعَلَيْهِمʿalayhimover themبِمُصَيْطِرٍbimuṣayṭirinever an exerciser of authority. ﴿٢٢﴾
[88:23] As for those who turn away and disbelieve.
إِلَّاillāButمَنmanwhoeverتَوَلَّىٰtawallāhe turned awayوَكَفَرَwakafaraand he disbelieved. ﴿٢٣﴾
[88:24] GOD will commit them to the great retribution.
فَيُعَذِّبُهُfayuʿadhibuhuThen [He] will punish himٱللَّهُl-lahuGodٱلْعَذَابَl-ʿadhāba(with) the retributionٱلْأَكْبَرَl-akbara[the] greater. ﴿٢٤﴾
[88:25] To us is their ultimate destiny.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,إِلَيْنَآilaynāto us (is)إِيَابَهُمْiyābahumtheir destination / return. ﴿٢٥﴾
[88:26] Then we will call them to account.
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّinnaindeed,عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāupon us (is)حِسَابَهُمḥisābahumtheir account. ﴿٢٦﴾
