In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[85:1] The sky and its galaxies.
وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiBy the sky,ذَاتِdhātiit possessingٱلْبُرُوجِl-burūjithe towers of stars / galaxies. ﴿١﴾
[85:2] The promised day.
وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiAnd the dayٱلْمَوْعُودِl-mawʿūdi[the] promised. ﴿٢﴾
[85:3] The witness and the witnessed.
وَشَاهِدٍwashāhidinAnd (the) witnessوَمَشْهُودٍwamashhūdinand (the) witnessed. ﴿٣﴾
[85:4] Woe to the people of the canyon.
قُتِلَqutilaWoe toأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(the) companions (of)ٱلْأُخْدُودِl-ukh'dūdithe canyon. ﴿٤﴾
[85:5] They ignited a blazing fire.
ٱلنَّارِal-nāriThe fireذَاتِdhātiit possessingٱلْوَقُودِl-waqūdithe fuel. ﴿٥﴾
[85:6] Then sat around it.
إِذْidhWhenهُمْhumtheyعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāby itقُعُودٌquʿūdun(were) sitting. ﴿٦﴾
[85:7] To watch the burning of the believers.
وَهُمْwahumAnd theyعَلَىٰʿalāoverمَاmāwhatيَفْعَلُونَyafʿalūnathey doبِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَbil-mu'minīnato the believersشُهُودٌshuhūdunwitnesses. ﴿٧﴾
[85:8] They hated them for no other reason than believing in GOD, the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.
وَمَاwamāAnd notنَقَمُوا۟naqamūthey resented / hatedمِنْهُمْmin'hum[of] themإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatيُؤْمِنُوا۟yu'minūthey believeبِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Godٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzithe Almighty,ٱلْحَمِيدِl-ḥamīdithe Praiseworthy. ﴿٨﴾
[85:9] To Him belongs the kingship of the heavens and the earth. And GOD witnesses all things.
ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe One whoلَهُۥlahufor Him (is)مُلْكُmul'ku(the) dominion / kingship (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth;وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuand God (is)عَلَىٰʿalāoverكُلِّkullieveryشَىْءٍshayinthingشَهِيدٌshahīduna witness. ﴿٩﴾
[85:10] Surely, those who persecute the believing men and women, then fail to repent, have incurred the retribution of Gehenna; they have incurred the retribution of burning.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoفَتَنُوا۟fatanūthey persecutedٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believing menوَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِwal-mu'minātiand the believing women,ثُمَّthummathenلَمْlamnotيَتُوبُوا۟yatūbūthey repent,فَلَهُمْfalahumthen for them (is)عَذَابُʿadhābu(the) retribution (of)جَهَنَّمَjahannamaGehennaوَلَهُمْwalahumand for them (is)عَذَابُʿadhābu(the) retribution (of)ٱلْحَرِيقِl-ḥarīqithe burning. ﴿١٠﴾
[85:11] Surely, those who believed and led a righteous life, have deserved gardens with flowing streams. This is the greatest triumph.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanū[they] believedوَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand [they] didٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥātithe righteous deeds,لَهُمْlahumfor themجَنَّـٰتٌjannātun(will be) gardensتَجْرِىtajrīit flowsمِنminfromتَحْتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath itٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُl-anhāruthe rivers / streams.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)ٱلْفَوْزُl-fawzuthe triumphٱلْكَبِيرُl-kabīruthe great. ﴿١١﴾
[85:12] Indeed, your Lord's blow is severe.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,بَطْشَbaṭsha(the) strike / blow (of)رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord (is)لَشَدِيدٌlashadīdunsurely strong. ﴿١٢﴾
[85:13] He is the One who initiates and repeats.
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, [He]هُوَhuwaHeيُبْدِئُyub'di-u[He] initiatesوَيُعِيدُwayuʿīduand He repeats. ﴿١٣﴾
[85:14] And He is the Forgiving, Most Kind.
وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He (is)ٱلْغَفُورُl-ghafūruthe Forgiving,ٱلْوَدُودُl-wadūduMost Loving / Most Kind. ﴿١٤﴾
[85:15] Possessor of the glorious throne.
ذُوdhūPossessor ofٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe throneٱلْمَجِيدُl-majīduthe glorious. ﴿١٥﴾
[85:16] Doer of whatever He wills.
فَعَّالٌfaʿʿālunDoerلِّمَاlimāof whatيُرِيدُyurīduHe wishes / wills. ﴿١٦﴾
[85:17] Did you note the history of the troops?
هَلْhalHasأَتَىٰكَatāka[it] came to youحَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) history (of)ٱلْجُنُودِl-junūdithe troops. ﴿١٧﴾
[85:18] Pharaoh and Thamûd?
فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaPharaohوَثَمُودَwathamūdaand Thamud? ﴿١٨﴾
[85:19] Those who disbelieve are plagued with denial.
بَلِbaliNay!ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedفِىfī(are) inتَكْذِيبٍtakdhībindenial. ﴿١٩﴾
[85:20] GOD is fully aware of them.
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuBut God (is)مِنminfromوَرَآئِهِمwarāihimbefore themمُّحِيطٌۢmuḥīṭunfully aware. ﴿٢٠﴾
[85:21] Indeed, it is a glorious Quran.
بَلْbalNay!هُوَhuwaIt (is)قُرْءَانٌqur'ānuna Quranمَّجِيدٌmajīdunglorious. ﴿٢١﴾
[85:22] In a preserved master tablet.
فِىfīInلَوْحٍlawḥina tablet,مَّحْفُوظٍۭmaḥfūẓinguarded / protected / preserved. ﴿٢٢﴾
