Sura 54: Al-Qamar (The Moon) القمر

Sura 54 - Al-Qamar
In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[54:1] The Hour has come closer, and the moon has split.*
ٱقْتَرَبَتِiq'tarabati[It] came near / closeٱلسَّاعَةُl-sāʿatuthe Hourوَٱنشَقَّwa-inshaqqaand [it] had splitٱلْقَمَرُl-qamaruthe moon. ﴿١﴾
*54:1 This important sign of the approaching end of the world came to pass in 1969 when humans landed on the moon and brought pieces of the moon to earth. At the same time, God's mathematical Miracle of the Quran was being gradually unveiled. Traditional Muslims opposed it, since it exposed the fallacy of their practices (App. 25).
[54:2] Then they saw a miracle; but they turned away and said, "Old magic."
وَإِنwa-inAnd indeed / ifيَرَوْا۟yarawthey seeءَايَةًāyatana sign / miracle,يُعْرِضُوا۟yuʿ'riḍūthey turn awayوَيَقُولُوا۟wayaqūlūand [they] say,سِحْرٌsiḥ'run"Magicمُّسْتَمِرٌّmus'tamirrunpersistent / enduring / ever recurring." ﴿٢﴾
[54:3] They disbelieved, followed their opinions, and adhered to their old traditions.
وَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūAnd they denied / disbelievedوَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟wa-ittabaʿūand they followedأَهْوَآءَهُمْahwāahumtheir desires / opinions,وَكُلُّwakulluand (in) everyأَمْرٍamrinmatter / commandمُّسْتَقِرٌّmus'taqirrunone who is fixed (in their ways). ﴿٣﴾
[54:4] Sufficient warnings have been delivered to alert them.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyجَآءَهُمjāahumit came to themمِّنَminaofٱلْأَنۢبَآءِl-anbāithe information / news / prophecyمَاwhatفِيهِfīhithereinمُزْدَجَرٌmuz'dajarun(as) a rebuke / deterrent. ﴿٤﴾
[54:5] Great wisdom; but all the warnings have been in vain.
حِكْمَةٌۢḥik'matunWisdomبَـٰلِغَةٌbālighatunfar-reaching / perfect / profound,فَمَاfamābut notتُغْنِtugh'ni[it] will avail / helpٱلنُّذُرُl-nudhuruthe warnings. ﴿٥﴾
[54:6] Ignore them; the day will come when the caller will announce a terrible disaster.
فَتَوَلَّfatawallaSo turn awayعَنْهُمْʿanhumfrom them.يَوْمَyawma(The) Day,يَدْعُyadʿu[he] will callٱلدَّاعِl-dāʿithe callerإِلَىٰilātoشَىْءٍshayina thingنُّكُرٍnukurinterrible. ﴿٦﴾
[54:7] With their eyes humiliated, they come out of the graves like scattered locusts.
خُشَّعًاkhushaʿan(Will be) humbled / humiliatedأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْabṣāruhumtheir eyesيَخْرُجُونَyakhrujūnathey will come outمِنَminafromٱلْأَجْدَاثِl-ajdāthithe gravesكَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they wereجَرَادٌjarādunlocustsمُّنتَشِرٌmuntashirunresurrected / spreading / scattered. ﴿٧﴾
[54:8] As they respond to the caller, the disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult day."
مُّهْطِعِينَmuh'ṭiʿīnaThose racing ahead / running in panicإِلَىilātoٱلدَّاعِl-dāʿithe caller.يَقُولُyaqūlu[He] will sayٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers,هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)يَوْمٌyawmuna Dayعَسِرٌʿasirundifficult." ﴿٨﴾
[54:9] The people of Noah disbelieved before them. They disbelieved our servant and said, "Crazy!" He was persecuted.
كَذَّبَتْkadhabat[It] denied / disbelievedقَبْلَهُمْqablahumbefore themقَوْمُqawmu(the) people (of)نُوحٍnūḥinNoah,فَكَذَّبُوا۟fakadhabūAnd they denied / disbelievedعَبْدَنَاʿabdanāour servantوَقَالُوا۟waqālūand [they] said,مَجْنُونٌmajnūnun"One who is crazy,"وَٱزْدُجِرَwa-uz'dujiraand he was driven away / persecuted. ﴿٩﴾
[54:10] He implored his Lord, "I am oppressed; grant me victory."
فَدَعَاfadaʿāSo he calledرَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis Lord,أَنِّىannī"Indeed, I amمَغْلُوبٌmaghlūbunone who is overpowered (oppressed),فَٱنتَصِرْfa-intaṣirso help / give victory." ﴿١٠﴾
[54:11] We then opened the gates of the sky, pouring water.
فَفَتَحْنَآfafataḥnāSo we openedأَبْوَٰبَabwāba(the) gates (of)ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāi[the] heavenبِمَآءٍbimāinwith waterمُّنْهَمِرٍmun'hamirinpouring down. ﴿١١﴾
[54:12] And we caused springs to gush out of the earth. The waters met to effect a predetermined decision.
وَفَجَّرْنَاwafajjarnāAnd we caused to burstٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthعُيُونًاʿuyūnan(with) springs,فَٱلْتَقَىfal-taqāso the meetingٱلْمَآءُl-māuthe water(s)عَلَىٰٓʿalāforأَمْرٍamrina matter / decisionقَدْqadalreadyقُدِرَqudirait was determined / decreed / predestined. ﴿١٢﴾
The Ark
[54:13] We carried him on a watercraft made of logs and ropes.
وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُwaḥamalnāhuAnd we carried himعَلَىٰʿalāonذَاتِdhāti(what) it possessed of أَلْوَٰحٍalwāḥinplanksوَدُسُرٍwadusurinand nails / ropes. ﴿١٣﴾
[54:14] It ran under our watchful eyes; a reward for one who was rejected.
تَجْرِىtajrīIt sails / flows / runsبِأَعْيُنِنَاbi-aʿyuninābefore our eyes,جَزَآءًjazāana rewardلِّمَنlimanfor (he) whoكَانَkānahe wasكُفِرَkufira[he was] denied / rejected. ﴿١٤﴾
[54:15] We have set it up as a lesson. Does any of you wish to learn?
وَلَقَدwalaqadAnd certainlyتَّرَكْنَـٰهَآtaraknāhāwe left it (as)ءَايَةًāyatana sign / lesson,فَهَلْfahalso is (there)مِنminanyمُّدَّكِرٍmuddakirinone who will take heed / learn? ﴿١٥﴾
[54:16] How terrible was My retribution after the warnings!
فَكَيْفَfakayfaSo howكَانَkānawasعَذَابِىʿadhābīMy retributionوَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings? ﴿١٦﴾
[54:17] We made the Quran easy to learn. Does any of you wish to learn?
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyيَسَّرْنَاyassarnāwe made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quranلِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor the remembrance / reminder / to take heed / to learn,فَهَلْfahalso is (there)مِنminanyمُّدَّكِرٍmuddakirinone who will take heed / learn? ﴿١٧﴾
[54:18] Ãd disbelieved. Consequently, how terrible was My retribution after the warnings.
كَذَّبَتْkadhabat[It] denied / disbelievedعَادٌʿādunAd;فَكَيْفَfakayfaso howكَانَkānawasعَذَابِىʿadhābīMy retributionوَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings? ﴿١٨﴾
[54:19] We sent upon them violent winds, on a day of continuous misery.
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, [we]أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon themرِيحًاrīḥana windصَرْصَرًاṣarṣaranfurious / violentفِىonيَوْمِyawmia day (of)نَحْسٍnaḥsinmisfortune / miseryمُّسْتَمِرٍّmus'tamirrinpersistent / uninterrupted / continuous. ﴿١٩﴾
[54:20] It tossed the people around as if they were decayed palm tree trunks.
تَنزِعُtanziʿu[It] plucked out / snatchedٱلنَّاسَl-nāsa[the] peopleكَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they wereأَعْجَازُaʿjāzutrunks (of)نَخْلٍnakhlindate-palmsمُّنقَعِرٍmunqaʿirinhallow and uprooted. ﴿٢٠﴾
[54:21] How terrible was My retribution after the warnings!
فَكَيْفَfakayfaSo howكَانَkānawasعَذَابِىʿadhābīMy retributionوَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings? ﴿٢١﴾
[54:22] We made the Quran easy to learn. Does any of you wish to learn?
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly,يَسَّرْنَاyassarnāwe made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quranلِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor the remembrance / reminder / to take heed / to learn,فَهَلْfahalso is (there)مِنminanyمُّدَّكِرٍmuddakirinone who will take heed / learn? ﴿٢٢﴾
[54:23] Thamûd rejected the warnings.
كَذَّبَتْkadhabat[It] denied / disbelievedثَمُودُthamūduThamudبِٱلنُّذُرِbil-nudhuri[in] the warnings. ﴿٢٣﴾
[54:24] They said, "Shall we follow one of us; a human being? We will then go astray, then end up in Hell.
فَقَالُوٓا۟faqālūAnd [they] said,أَبَشَرًاabasharan"Is it a human beingمِّنَّاminnāamong usوَٰحِدًاwāḥidanone,نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓnattabiʿuhu(that) we should follow him.إِنَّآinnāIndeed, weإِذًاidhanthen (will be)لَّفِىlafīsurely inضَلَـٰلٍḍalālinastrayوَسُعُرٍwasuʿurinand set ablazed / Hell. ﴿٢٤﴾
[54:25] "Did the message come down to him, instead of us? He is a flagrant liar."
أَءُلْقِىَa-ul'qiya"Did [it] get grantedٱلذِّكْرُl-dhik'ruthe reminder / messageعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himمِنۢminfromبَيْنِنَاbayninābetween / before us (*instead of us)?بَلْbalNay,هُوَhuwahe (is)كَذَّابٌkadhābuna liarأَشِرٌashiruninsolent / flagrant." ﴿٢٥﴾
[54:26] They will find out tomorrow who the flagrant liar is.
سَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūnaThey will knowغَدًاghadantomorrowمَّنِmaniwho (is)ٱلْكَذَّابُl-kadhābuthe liar,ٱلْأَشِرُl-ashiruthe insolent one / flagrant. ﴿٢٦﴾
[54:27] We are sending the camel as a test for them. Watch them and be patient.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we (are)مُرْسِلُوا۟mur'silū[ones] sendingٱلنَّاقَةِl-nāqatithe she-camelفِتْنَةًfit'natan(as) a testلَّهُمْlahumfor them,فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْfa-ir'taqib'humso watch themوَٱصْطَبِرْwa-iṣ'ṭabirand be patient. ﴿٢٧﴾
[54:28] Inform them that the water shall be divided among them; (the camel) shall be allowed to drink on her designated day.
وَنَبِّئْهُمْwanabbi'humAnd inform themأَنَّannathatٱلْمَآءَl-māathe waterقِسْمَةٌۢqis'matun(is) to be allotted / shared / dividedبَيْنَهُمْbaynahumbetween them,كُلُّkullueachشِرْبٍshir'bindrankمُّحْتَضَرٌmuḥ'taḍarunpresented by turn (*took a turn). ﴿٢٨﴾
[54:29] But they persuaded their friend to kill (the camel), and he obliged.
فَنَادَوْا۟fanādawBut they calledصَاحِبَهُمْṣāḥibahumtheir companionفَتَعَاطَىٰfataʿāṭāand he undertook (the task)فَعَقَرَfaʿaqaraand he slaughtered (the camel). ﴿٢٩﴾
[54:30] Consequently, how terrible was My retribution! They have been warned.
فَكَيْفَfakayfaSo howكَانَkānawasعَذَابِىʿadhābīMy retributionوَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings. ﴿٣٠﴾
[54:31] We sent upon them one blow, whereupon they became like harvested hay.
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, [we]أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon themصَيْحَةًṣayḥatanblast / blowوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatansingle,فَكَانُوا۟fakānūand they becameكَهَشِيمِkahashīmilike dry twig fragments / harvested hayٱلْمُحْتَظِرِl-muḥ'taẓiri(used by) the fence builder / the one who builds enclosures. ﴿٣١﴾
[54:32] We made the Quran easy to learn. Does any of you wish to learn?
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyيَسَّرْنَاyassarnāwe made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quranلِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor the remembrance / reminder / to take heed / to learn,فَهَلْfahalso is (there)مِنminanyمُّدَّكِرٍmuddakirinone who will take heed / learn? ﴿٣٢﴾
[54:33] The people of Lot rejected the warnings.
كَذَّبَتْkadhabat[It] denied / rejectedقَوْمُqawmu(the) people (of)لُوطٍۭlūṭinLot,بِٱلنُّذُرِbil-nudhuri[in] the warnings. ﴿٣٣﴾
[54:34] We showered them with rocks. Only Lot's family was saved at dawn.
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, [we]أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon themحَاصِبًاḥāṣibana storm of stones,إِلَّآillāexceptءَالَāla(the) family (of)لُوطٍlūṭinLot.نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُمnajjaynāhumWe saved themبِسَحَرٍbisaḥarinby dawn. ﴿٣٤﴾
[54:35] We blessed him and his family; we thus reward the appreciative.
نِّعْمَةًniʿ'matan(As) a favor / blessingمِّنْminfromعِندِنَاʿindinā[at] us.كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusنَجْزِىnajzīwe rewardمَنman(one) whoشَكَرَshakarahe was appreciative. ﴿٣٥﴾
[54:36] He warned them about our requital, but they ridiculed the warnings.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyأَنذَرَهُمandharahumhe warned them (of)بَطْشَتَنَاbaṭshatanāour strike / requital,فَتَمَارَوْا۟fatamārawbut they disputed / entertained doubts (ridiculed)بِٱلنُّذُرِbil-nudhuri[in] the warnings. ﴿٣٦﴾
[54:37] They negotiated with him about his guests; we blinded them. Suffer My retribution; you have been warned.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyرَٰوَدُوهُrāwadūhuthey solicited / negotiated (with) him عَنʿanabout / regarding / concerningضَيْفِهِۦḍayfihihis guests,فَطَمَسْنَآfaṭamasnāso we made to lose brightness / blindedأَعْيُنَهُمْaʿyunahumtheir eyes.فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqū"So taste [you all]عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy retributionوَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings." ﴿٣٧﴾
[54:38] Early the next morning, a devastating retribution struck them.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyصَبَّحَهُمṣabbaḥahumit seized them in the morning,بُكْرَةًbuk'ratan(in the) morningعَذَابٌʿadhābuna retributionمُّسْتَقِرٌّmus'taqirruna fixed time. ﴿٣٨﴾
[54:39] Suffer My retribution; you have been warned.
فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūSo taste [you all]عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy retributionوَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings. ﴿٣٩﴾
[54:40] We made the Quran easy to learn. Does any of you wish to learn?
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyيَسَّرْنَاyassarnāwe made easyٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quranلِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor the remembrance / reminder / to take heed / to learn,فَهَلْfahalso is (there)مِنminanyمُّدَّكِرٍmuddakirinone who will take heed / learn? ﴿٤٠﴾
[54:41] Pharaoh's people were warned.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyجَآءَjāait cameءَالَāla(to the) people (of)فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaPharaohٱلنُّذُرُl-nudhuru[the] warnings. ﴿٤١﴾
[54:42] They rejected all our signs. Consequently, we requited them as an Almighty, Omnipotent should.
كَذَّبُوا۟kadhabūThey denied / rejectedبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināin our signs,كُلِّهَاkullihāall of them,فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْfa-akhadhnāhumso we seized / punished / requited themأَخْذَakhdha(with the) seizure / requital (of)عَزِيزٍʿazīzinAlmighty,مُّقْتَدِرٍmuq'tadirin(the) Powerful One / Omnipotent. ﴿٤٢﴾
[54:43] Are your disbelievers better than those disbelievers? Have you been absolved by the scripture?
أَكُفَّارُكُمْakuffārukumAre your disbelieversخَيْرٌkhayrunbetterمِّنْminthanأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْulāikumthose,أَمْamor isلَكُمlakumfor you [all]بَرَآءَةٌbarāatunexoneration / absolutionفِىinٱلزُّبُرِl-zuburithe scriptures? ﴿٤٣﴾
[54:44] Perhaps they think, "We will be the winners."
أَمْamOr doيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say,نَحْنُnaḥnu"Weجَمِيعٌjamīʿuntogetherمُّنتَصِرٌmuntaṣiruntriumphant / victorious?" ﴿٤٤﴾
[54:45] All of them will be defeated; they will turn around and flee.
سَيُهْزَمُsayuh'zamu(Soon) [it] will be defeatedٱلْجَمْعُl-jamʿuall togetherوَيُوَلُّونَwayuwallūnaand they will turn*ٱلدُّبُرَl-dubura(their) [the] backs (*flee). ﴿٤٥﴾
[54:46] The Hour is awaiting them, and the Hour is far worse and more painful.
بَلِbaliNay,ٱلسَّاعَةُl-sāʿatuthe Hourمَوْعِدُهُمْmawʿiduhum(is) their promised time,وَٱلسَّاعَةُwal-sāʿatuand the Hourأَدْهَىٰadhā(will be) more grievous / far worseوَأَمَرُّwa-amarruand more continuous. ﴿٤٦﴾
[54:47] Certainly, the guilty are astray, and will end up in Hell.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَl-muj'rimīnathe guilty ones (are)فِى[in]ضَلَـٰلٍḍalālinastrayوَسُعُرٍwasuʿurinand set ablazed / Hell. ﴿٤٧﴾
[54:48] They will be dragged into the hellfire, forcibly. Suffer the agony of retribution.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيُسْحَبُونَyus'ḥabūnathey will be draggedفِىintoٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fireعَلَىٰʿalāonوُجُوهِهِمْwujūhihimtheir faces (*forcibly),ذُوقُوا۟dhūqū"Taste [you all]مَسَّmassaaffliction (of)سَقَرَsaqarafire (of Hell) / retribution." ﴿٤٨﴾
[54:49] Everything we created is precisely measured.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكُلَّkullaeveryشَىْءٍshayinthingخَلَقْنَـٰهُkhalaqnāhuwe created itبِقَدَرٍbiqadarinin precise measure. ﴿٤٩﴾
[54:50] Our commands are done within the blink of an eye.
وَمَآwamāAnd notأَمْرُنَآamrunā(it is) our commandإِلَّاillābutوَٰحِدَةٌwāḥidatunone,كَلَمْحٍۭkalamḥinlike a blink (of)بِٱلْبَصَرِbil-baṣariof the eye. ﴿٥٠﴾
[54:51] We annihilated your counterparts. Does any of you wish to learn?
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyأَهْلَكْنَآahlaknāwe annihilatedأَشْيَاعَكُمْashyāʿakumyour counterparts,فَهَلْfahalso is (there)مِنminanyمُّدَّكِرٍmuddakirinone who will take heed / learn? ﴿٥١﴾
[54:52] Everything they did is recorded in the scriptures.
وَكُلُّwakulluAnd everyشَىْءٍshayinthingفَعَلُوهُfaʿalūhuthey did itفِى(is) inٱلزُّبُرِl-zuburithe books / scriptures. ﴿٥٢﴾
[54:53] Everything, small or large, is written down.
وَكُلُّwakulluAnd everyصَغِيرٍṣaghīrinsmallوَكَبِيرٍwakabīrinand largeمُّسْتَطَرٌmus'taṭarun(is) written down. ﴿٥٣﴾
[54:54] Surely, the righteous have deserved gardens and rivers.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous [ones]فِى(will be) inجَنَّـٰتٍjannātingardensوَنَهَرٍwanaharinand river. ﴿٥٤﴾
[54:55] In a position of honor, at an Omnipotent King.
فِىInمَقْعَدِmaqʿadia seat / positionصِدْقٍṣid'qinhonorableعِندَʿindaatمَلِيكٍmalīkina Kingمُّقْتَدِرٍۭmuq'tadirinMost Powerful / Omnipotent. ﴿٥٥﴾
