In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[80:1] He (Muhammad) frowned and turned away.
عَبَسَʿabasaHe frownedوَتَوَلَّىٰٓwatawallāand he turned away. ﴿١﴾
[80:2] When the blind man came to him.
أَنanWhenجَآءَهُjāahu[he] came to himٱلْأَعْمَىٰl-aʿmāthe blind (person). ﴿٢﴾
[80:3] How do you know? He may purify himself.
وَمَاwamāBut what*يُدْرِيكَyud'rīkait will make you know (*how do you know)?لَعَلَّهُۥlaʿallahuThat perhaps heيَزَّكَّىٰٓyazzakkā[he] purify himself. ﴿٣﴾
[80:4] Or he may take heed, and benefit from the message.
أَوْawOrيَذَّكَّرُyadhakkaruhe is remindedفَتَنفَعَهُfatanfaʿahuso it (would) benefit himٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓl-dhik'rāthe reminder / message. ﴿٤﴾
[80:5] As for the rich man.
أَمَّاammāAs forمَنِmani(him) whoٱسْتَغْنَىٰis'taghnāhe considered himself free from need / rich. ﴿٥﴾
[80:6] You gave him your attention.
فَأَنتَfa-antaSo youلَهُۥlahuto himتَصَدَّىٰtaṣaddāyou give attention. ﴿٦﴾
[80:7] Even though you could not guarantee his salvation.
وَمَاwamāAnd notعَلَيْكَʿalaykaupon youأَلَّاallāthat notيَزَّكَّىٰyazzakkāhe purify himself. ﴿٧﴾
[80:8] The one who came to you eagerly.
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنman(he) whoجَآءَكَjāakahe came to youيَسْعَىٰyasʿāhe striving / eagerly. ﴿٨﴾
[80:9] And is really reverent.
وَهُوَwahuwaWhile heيَخْشَىٰyakhshā[he] is reverent. ﴿٩﴾
[80:10] You ignored him.
فَأَنتَfa-antaBut youعَنْهُʿanhufrom himتَلَهَّىٰtalahhāyou were distracted. ﴿١٠﴾
[80:11] Indeed, this is a reminder.
كَلَّآkallāNay!إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, [it]تَذْكِرَةٌtadhkiratuna reminder. ﴿١١﴾
[80:12] Whoever wills shall take heed.
فَمَنfamanSo whosoeverشَآءَshāahe willedذَكَرَهُۥdhakarahuhe (shall) remember it / take heed to it. ﴿١٢﴾
[80:13] In honorable scriptures.
فِىfīInصُحُفٍṣuḥufinpages / writings / teachingsمُّكَرَّمَةٍmukarramatinhonored. ﴿١٣﴾
[80:14] Exalted and pure.
مَّرْفُوعَةٍmarfūʿatinExalted,مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭmuṭahharatinpurified. ﴿١٤﴾
[80:15] (Written) by the hands of messengers.
بِأَيْدِىbi-aydīBy (the) hands (of)سَفَرَةٍsafaratinambassadors / messengers. ﴿١٥﴾
[80:16] Who are honorable and righteous.
كِرَامٍۭkirāminNoble / honorable,بَرَرَةٍbararatinrighteous. ﴿١٦﴾
[80:17] Woe to the human being; he is so unappreciative!
قُتِلَqutilaWoe toٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[the] man / human being,مَآmāhowأَكْفَرَهُۥakfarahumore unappreciative is he! ﴿١٧﴾
[80:18] What did He create him from?
مِنْminFromأَىِّayyiwhatشَىْءٍshayinthingخَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created him? ﴿١٨﴾
[80:19] From a tiny drop, He creates him and designs him.
مِنminFromنُّطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatina tiny dropخَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created him,فَقَدَّرَهُۥfaqaddarahuthen He proportioned / designed him. ﴿١٩﴾
[80:20] Then He points out the path for him.
ثُمَّthummaThenٱلسَّبِيلَl-sabīlathe path,يَسَّرَهُۥyassarahuHe made easy for him. ﴿٢٠﴾
[80:21] Then He puts him to death, and into the grave.
ثُمَّthummaThenأَمَاتَهُۥamātahuHe caused him to dieفَأَقْبَرَهُۥfa-aqbarahuand He provided a grave for him. ﴿٢١﴾
[80:22] When He wills, He resurrects him.
ثُمَّthummaThenإِذَاidhāwhenشَآءَshāaHe willed,أَنشَرَهُۥansharahuHe (will) resurrect him. ﴿٢٢﴾
[80:23] He shall uphold His commandments.
كَلَّاkallāNay!لَمَّاlammāyetيَقْضِyaqḍihe (shall) completeمَآmāwhatأَمَرَهُۥamarahuHe commanded him. ﴿٢٣﴾
[80:24] Let the human consider his food!
فَلْيَنظُرِfalyanẓuriThen let [him] look / considerٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe man / human beingإِلَىٰilāatطَعَامِهِۦٓṭaʿāmihihis food. ﴿٢٤﴾
[80:25] We pour the water generously.
أَنَّاannāThat weصَبَبْنَاṣababnā[we] pouredٱلْمَآءَl-māathe waterصَبًّاṣabbanin abundance. ﴿٢٥﴾
[80:26] Then we split the soil open.
ثُمَّthummaThenشَقَقْنَاshaqaqnā[we] splitٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthشَقًّاshaqqansplitting / a sunder / open. ﴿٢٦﴾
[80:27] We grow in it grains.
فَأَنۢبَتْنَاfa-anbatnāThen we caused to growفِيهَاfīhāthereinحَبًّاḥabbangrain. ﴿٢٧﴾
[80:28] Grapes and pasture.
وَعِنَبًاwaʿinabanAnd grapesوَقَضْبًاwaqaḍbanand green fodder / pasture. ﴿٢٨﴾
[80:29] Olives and palms.
وَزَيْتُونًاwazaytūnanAnd olivesوَنَخْلًاwanakhlanand date-palms. ﴿٢٩﴾
[80:30] A variety of orchards.
وَحَدَآئِقَwaḥadāiqaAnd gardens / orchards (of)غُلْبًاghul'banthick foliage / dense. ﴿٣٠﴾
[80:31] Fruits and vegetables.
وَفَـٰكِهَةًwafākihatanAnd fruitsوَأَبًّاwa-abbanand grass / herbage / vegetables. ﴿٣١﴾
[80:32] To provide life support for you and your animals.
مَّتَـٰعًاmatāʿan(As) a provisionلَّكُمْlakumfor you [all]وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْwali-anʿāmikumand for your livestock. ﴿٣٢﴾
[80:33] Then, when the blow comes to pass.
فَإِذَاfa-idhāBut when [in the future]جَآءَتِjāati[it] cameٱلصَّآخَّةُl-ṣākhatuthe deafening blast / blow. ﴿٣٣﴾
[80:34] That is the day when one flees from his brother.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَفِرُّyafirru[he] will fleeٱلْمَرْءُl-maruthe man / oneمِنْminfromأَخِيهِakhīhihis brother. ﴿٣٤﴾
[80:35] From his mother and father.
وَأُمِّهِۦwa-ummihiAnd his motherوَأَبِيهِwa-abīhiand his father. ﴿٣٥﴾
[80:36] From his spouse and children.
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦwaṣāḥibatihiAnd his wife / spouseوَبَنِيهِwabanīhiand his children. ﴿٣٦﴾
[80:37] Each one of them, on that day, worries about his own destiny.
لِكُلِّlikulliFor everyٱمْرِئٍim'ri-inman / oneمِّنْهُمْmin'humamong themيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat dayشَأْنٌshanuna (single) concern يُغْنِيهِyugh'nīhiit avails him. ﴿٣٧﴾
[80:38] Some faces on that day will be happy.
وُجُوهٌwujūhunFaces,يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat dayمُّسْفِرَةٌmus'firatun(will be) gleaming / shining (happy). ﴿٣٨﴾
[80:39] Laughing and joyful.
ضَاحِكَةٌḍāḥikatunLaughing,مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌmus'tabshiratunrejoicing at good news. ﴿٣٩﴾
[80:40] Other faces, on that day, will be covered with misery.
وَوُجُوهٌwawujūhunAnd faces,يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat day,عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāupon themغَبَرَةٌghabaratun(will be) dust / misery. ﴿٤٠﴾
[80:41] Overwhelmed by remorse.
تَرْهَقُهَاtarhaquhā[It] will cover (overwhelm) themقَتَرَةٌqataratundarkness. ﴿٤١﴾
[80:42] These are the wicked disbelievers.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseهُمُhumuthey (are)ٱلْكَفَرَةُl-kafaratuthe disbelievers,ٱلْفَجَرَةُl-fajaratuthe immoral / sinful / wicked ones. ﴿٤٢﴾
