Sura 78: Al-Naba’ (The Event) النبأ

Sura 78 - Al-Naba’
In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[78:1] What are they questioning?
عَمَّʿammaAbout what (is it that)يَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnathey are questioning? ﴿١﴾
[78:2] The great event.
عَنِʿaniAboutٱلنَّبَإِl-naba-ithe event / newsٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe great / momentous. ﴿٢﴾
[78:3] That is disputed by them.
ٱلَّذِىalladhīWhichهُمْhumthey (are)فِيهِfīhiconcerning itمُخْتَلِفُونَmukh'talifūnaones who are in disagreement / dispute. ﴿٣﴾
[78:4] Indeed, they will find out.
كَلَّاkallāAbsolutely!سَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know. ﴿٤﴾
[78:5] Most assuredly, they will find out.
ثُمَّthummaThenكَلَّاkallāAbsolutely!سَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know. ﴿٥﴾
[78:6] Did we not make the earth habitable?
أَلَمْalamHave notنَجْعَلِnajʿaliwe madeٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthمِهَـٰدًاmihādana resting place / habitable? ﴿٦﴾
[78:7] And the mountains stabilizers?
وَٱلْجِبَالَwal-jibālaAnd the mountainsأَوْتَادًاawtādan(as) pegs / stakes (stabilizers). ﴿٧﴾
[78:8] We created you as mates (for one another).
وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْwakhalaqnākumAnd we created you [all]أَزْوَٰجًاazwājan(as) mates (for one another). ﴿٨﴾
[78:9] We created sleeping so you can rest.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeنَوْمَكُمْnawmakumyour sleepسُبَاتًاsubātan(for) rest. ﴿٩﴾
[78:10] We made the night a cover.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeٱلَّيْلَal-laylathe nightلِبَاسًاlibāsan(as) covering. ﴿١٠﴾
[78:11] And the day to seek provisions.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeٱلنَّهَارَl-nahārathe dayمَعَاشًاmaʿāshan(for) livelihood. ﴿١١﴾
[78:12] We built above you seven universes.
وَبَنَيْنَاwabanaynāAnd we constructedفَوْقَكُمْfawqakumover you [all]سَبْعًاsabʿansevenشِدَادًاshidādanstrong (universes), ﴿١٢﴾
[78:13] We created a bright lamp.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we placedسِرَاجًاsirājana lampوَهَّاجًاwahhājanburning / bright. ﴿١٣﴾
[78:14] We send down from the clouds pouring water.
وَأَنزَلْنَاwa-anzalnāAnd we sent downمِنَminafromٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِl-muʿ'ṣirātithe rain cloudsمَآءًmāanwaterثَجَّاجًاthajjājanpouring. ﴿١٤﴾
[78:15] To produce with it grains and plants.
لِّنُخْرِجَlinukh'rijaThat we may produceبِهِۦbihitherebyحَبًّاḥabbangrainوَنَبَاتًاwanabātanand vegetation. ﴿١٥﴾
[78:16] And various orchards.
وَجَنَّـٰتٍwajannātinAnd gardens (of)أَلْفَافًاalfāfanthick foliage. ﴿١٦﴾
[78:17] The Day of Decision is appointed.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,يَوْمَyawma(the) Day (of)ٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣlithe Decisionكَانَkānait (will) beمِيقَـٰتًاmīqātanan appointed time. ﴿١٧﴾
[78:18] The day the horn is blown, and you come in throngs.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيُنفَخُyunfakhu[it] will be blownفِىinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe hornفَتَأْتُونَfatatūnaand you [all] will come forthأَفْوَاجًاafwājan(in) crowds / throngs. ﴿١٨﴾
[78:19] The heaven will be opened like gates.
وَفُتِحَتِwafutiḥatiAnd [it] (will be) openedٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenفَكَانَتْfakānatand it becameأَبْوَٰبًاabwābangateways. ﴿١٩﴾
[78:20] The mountains will be removed, as if they were a mirage.
وَسُيِّرَتِwasuyyiratiAnd [it] (will be) movedٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsفَكَانَتْfakānatand it becameسَرَابًاsarābana mirage. ﴿٢٠﴾
[78:21] Gehenna is inevitable.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHellكَانَتْkānatit becameمِرْصَادًاmir'ṣādan[one] lying in wait. ﴿٢١﴾
[78:22] For the transgressors; it will be their abode.
لِّلطَّـٰغِينَlilṭṭāghīnaFor the transgressorsمَـَٔابًاmaābana place of return. ﴿٢٢﴾
[78:23] They stay in it for ages.
لَّـٰبِثِينَlābithīnaOnes remaining / abidingفِيهَآfīhāthereinأَحْقَابًاaḥqāban(for) ages. ﴿٢٣﴾
[78:24] They never taste in it coolness, nor a drink.
لَّاNotيَذُوقُونَyadhūqūnathey will tasteفِيهَاfīhāin itبَرْدًاbardancoolnessوَلَاwalāand notشَرَابًاsharāban(any) drink. ﴿٢٤﴾
[78:25] Only an inferno, and bitter food.
إِلَّاillāExceptحَمِيمًاḥamīmaninfernoوَغَسَّاقًاwaghassāqanand purulence / bitter food. ﴿٢٥﴾
[78:26] A just requital.
جَزَآءًjazāanA requitalوِفَاقًاwifāqanappropriate / befitting. ﴿٢٦﴾
[78:27] They never expected to be held accountable.
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟kānū[they] wereلَاnotيَرْجُونَyarjūnathey expectingحِسَابًاḥisābanan account. ﴿٢٧﴾
[78:28] And utterly rejected our signs.
وَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūAnd they rejectedبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināin our signsكِذَّابًاkidhāban(with) denial / rejection. ﴿٢٨﴾
[78:29] We counted everything in a record.
وَكُلَّwakullaAnd everyشَىْءٍshayinthingأَحْصَيْنَـٰهُaḥṣaynāhuwe counted itكِتَـٰبًاkitāban(in) a book / record. ﴿٢٩﴾
[78:30] Suffer the consequences; we will only increase your retribution.
فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūSo taste [you all],فَلَنfalanand not نَّزِيدَكُمْnazīdakumwe will increase you [all]إِلَّاillāexceptعَذَابًاʿadhāban(in) retribution. ﴿٣٠﴾
[78:31] The righteous have deserved a reward.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,لِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous [ones]مَفَازًاmafāzan(is) success. ﴿٣١﴾
[78:32] Orchards and grapes.
حَدَآئِقَḥadāiqaGardens / Orchardsوَأَعْنَـٰبًاwa-aʿnābanand grapes. ﴿٣٢﴾
[78:33] Magnificent spouses.
وَكَوَاعِبَwakawāʿibaAnd splendid companionsأَتْرَابًاatrābanequally aged / perfectly matched / suitable. ﴿٣٣﴾
[78:34] Delicious drinks.
وَكَأْسًاwakasanAnd a cupدِهَاقًاdihāqanfull / brimming / over flowing. ﴿٣٤﴾
[78:35] They will never hear in it any nonsense or lies.
لَّاNotيَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnathey will hearفِيهَاfīhāin itلَغْوًاlaghwan(any) vain talk / nonsenseوَلَاwalāand notكِذَّٰبًاkidhāban(any) falsehood. ﴿٣٥﴾
[78:36] A reward from your Lord; a generous recompense.
جَزَآءًjazāan(As) a recompenseمِّنminfromرَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lord,عَطَآءًʿaṭāana giftحِسَابًاḥisāban(taking) to account. ﴿٣٦﴾
[78:37] Lord of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them. The Most Gracious. No one can abrogate His decisions.
رَّبِّrabbiLord (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَمَاwamāand whatever (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of them.ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāni(The) Most Gracious,لَاnotيَمْلِكُونَyamlikūnathey possess powerمِنْهُmin'hufrom Himخِطَابًاkhiṭāban(to) address / object / argue. ﴿٣٧﴾
[78:38] The day will come when the Spirit and the angels will stand in a row. None will speak except those permitted by the Most Gracious, and they will utter only what is right.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَقُومُyaqūmuhe will standٱلرُّوحُl-rūḥuthe Spiritوَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُwal-malāikatuand the angelsصَفًّاṣaffan(in) rank / row / lineلَّاnotيَتَكَلَّمُونَyatakallamūnathey will speakإِلَّاillāexceptمَنْman(one) whoأَذِنَadhinaHe permittedلَهُlahufor himٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānu(the) Most Gracious,وَقَالَwaqālaand he saidصَوَابًاṣawāban(what is) right. ﴿٣٨﴾
[78:39] Such is the inevitable day. Whoever wills let him take refuge in his Lord.
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)ٱلْيَوْمُl-yawmuthe dayٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaquthe inevitable.فَمَنfamanSo whoeverشَآءَshāahe willedٱتَّخَذَittakhadhahe took / choseإِلَىٰilātowardsرَبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lordمَـَٔابًاmaābana place of return / destination. ﴿٣٩﴾
[78:40] We have sufficiently warned you about an imminent retribution. That is the day when everyone will examine what his hands have sent forth, and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish I were dust."
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, weأَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْandharnākum[we] warned you [all] (of)عَذَابًاʿadhābana retributionقَرِيبًاqarībannear / imminent.يَوْمَyawma(The) dayيَنظُرُyanẓuru[he] will seeٱلْمَرْءُl-maruthe man / oneمَاwhatقَدَّمَتْqaddamat[it] sent forthيَدَاهُyadāhuboth his handsوَيَقُولُwayaqūluand [he] will sayٱلْكَافِرُl-kāfiruthe disbeliever,يَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanī"Oh, I wish (that)كُنتُkuntuI wereتُرَٰبًۢاturābandust!" ﴿٤٠﴾
