In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[73:1] O you cloaked one.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُl-muzamilu[the] cloaked one! ﴿١﴾
[73:2] Meditate during the night, except rarely.
قُمِqumiStand up / Meditateٱلَّيْلَal-layla(in) the night.إِلَّاillāExceptقَلِيلًاqalīlana little / rarely. ﴿٢﴾
[73:3] Half of it, or a little less.
نِّصْفَهُۥٓniṣ'fahuHalf of it,أَوِawiorٱنقُصْunquṣlessenمِنْهُmin'hufrom itقَلِيلًاqalīlana little. ﴿٣﴾
[73:4] Or a little more. And read the Quran from cover to cover.
أَوْawOrزِدْzidaddعَلَيْهِʿalayhito it.وَرَتِّلِwarattiliAnd read correctly / slow with attention to detailٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quranتَرْتِيلًاtartīlan(in) specific / distinct order / entirety (*from cover to cover). ﴿٤﴾
[73:5] We will give you a heavy message.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weسَنُلْقِىsanul'qī[we] will direct / giveعَلَيْكَʿalaykaupon youقَوْلًاqawlanwords / a saying / messageثَقِيلًاthaqīlanheavy. ﴿٥﴾
[73:6] The meditation at night is more effective, and more righteous.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,نَاشِئَةَnāshi-ata(the) rising (meditation)ٱلَّيْلِal-layli(at) the night,هِىَhiyait (is)أَشَدُّashaddumore difficult / stronger / intenseوَطْـًٔاwaṭanpotent / subduing / effectiveوَأَقْوَمُwa-aqwamuand more suitable / properقِيلًاqīlan(for) thought / speech. ﴿٦﴾
[73:7] You have a lot of time during the day for other matters.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,لَكَlakafor youفِىfīduringٱلنَّهَارِl-nahārithe day (is)سَبْحًاsabḥan(for) occupation / daily activitiesطَوِيلًاṭawīlanprolonged / long time (lot of time). ﴿٧﴾
[73:8] You shall commemorate the name of your Lord, to come ever closer and closer to Him.
وَٱذْكُرِwa-udh'kuriAnd commemorateٱسْمَis'ma(the) name (of)رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordوَتَبَتَّلْwatabattaland devote (yourself)إِلَيْهِilayhito Himتَبْتِيلًاtabtīlan(with) exclusive and sincere devotion (*to draw closer). ﴿٨﴾
[73:9] Lord of the east and the west; there is no other god besides Him. You should choose Him as your advocate.
رَّبُّrabbu(The) Lord (of)ٱلْمَشْرِقِl-mashriqithe eastوَٱلْمَغْرِبِwal-maghribiand the west;لَآlānoإِلَـٰهَilāhagodإِلَّاillāexceptهُوَhuwaHim,فَٱتَّخِذْهُfa-ittakhidh'huso take / choose Himوَكِيلًاwakīlan(as) Disposer of Affairs / Advocate. ﴿٩﴾
[73:10] And remain steadfast in the face of their utterances, and disregard them in a nice manner.
وَٱصْبِرْwa-iṣ'birAnd be steadfastعَلَىٰʿalāagainstمَاmāwhatيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say,وَٱهْجُرْهُمْwa-uh'jur'humand depart / shun / disregard them,هَجْرًاhajrandeparting / disregardingجَمِيلًاjamīlangracious. ﴿١٠﴾
[73:11] And let Me deal with the rejectors, who have been generously blessed; just give them a little time.
وَذَرْنِىwadharnīAnd leave Meوَٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَwal-mukadhibīnawith the deniers / rejectors,أُو۟لِىulīpossessors of*ٱلنَّعْمَةِl-naʿmatithe favor / blessing (*those generously blessed),وَمَهِّلْهُمْwamahhil'humand respite themقَلِيلًاqalīlana little. ﴿١١﴾
[73:12] We have severe punishments, and Hell.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,لَدَيْنَآladaynāwith us (are)أَنكَالًاankālanshackles / severe punishmentsوَجَحِيمًاwajaḥīmanand Hell. ﴿١٢﴾
[73:13] Food that can hardly be swallowed, and painful retribution.
وَطَعَامًاwaṭaʿāmanAnd foodذَاdhā(that) [of]غُصَّةٍghuṣṣatinchokes / hard to swallowوَعَذَابًاwaʿadhābanand a retributionأَلِيمًاalīmanpainful. ﴿١٣﴾
[73:14] The day will come when the earth and the mountains will quake, and the mountains will turn into a weightless pile.
يَوْمَyawma(On the) Dayتَرْجُفُtarjufuit will quakeٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthوَٱلْجِبَالُwal-jibāluand the mountains,وَكَانَتِwakānatiand [it] (will) becomeٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsكَثِيبًاkathībana heap of sand / pileمَّهِيلًاmahīlanheaped up / poured out. ﴿١٤﴾
[73:15] We have sent to you a messenger, just as we sent to Pharaoh a messenger.
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, weأَرْسَلْنَآarsalnā[we] sentإِلَيْكُمْilaykumto you [all]رَسُولًاrasūlana messengerشَـٰهِدًاshāhidan(as) a witnessعَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon you [all],كَمَآkamāasأَرْسَلْنَآarsalnāwe sentإِلَىٰilātoفِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaPharaohرَسُولًاrasūlana messenger. ﴿١٥﴾
[73:16] Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger and, consequently, we punished him severely.
فَعَصَىٰfaʿaṣāBut [he] disobeyedفِرْعَوْنُfir'ʿawnuPharaohٱلرَّسُولَl-rasūlathe messenger,فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُfa-akhadhnāhuso we punished himأَخْذًاakhdhan(with) a punishmentوَبِيلًاwabīlanterrible / severe. ﴿١٦﴾
[73:17] If you disbelieve, how can you evade a day so terrible that it makes the infants gray-haired?
فَكَيْفَfakayfaThen howتَتَّقُونَtattaqūna(will) you [all] guard against evils and calamitiesإِنinifكَفَرْتُمْkafartumyou [all] disbelieved,يَوْمًاyawmana Dayيَجْعَلُyajʿaluit will makeٱلْوِلْدَٰنَl-wil'dānathe childrenشِيبًاshībangray-haired? ﴿١٧﴾
[73:18] The heaven will shatter therefrom. His promise is true.
ٱلسَّمَآءُal-samāuThe heavenمُنفَطِرٌۢmunfaṭirun(will) break apart / shatterبِهِۦbihitherefrom,كَانَkāna[it] wasوَعْدُهُۥwaʿduhuHis promiseمَفْعُولًاmafʿūlan(to be) done / fulfilled. ﴿١٨﴾
[73:19] This is a reminder; whoever wills, let him choose the path to his Lord.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰذِهِۦhādhihithis (is)تَذْكِرَةٌtadhkiratuna reminder,فَمَنfamanthen whoeverشَآءَshāahe willedٱتَّخَذَittakhadhahe took / choseإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lordسَبِيلًاsabīlana path. ﴿١٩﴾
[73:20] Your Lord knows that you meditate during two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, and so do some of those who believed with you. GOD has designed the night and the day, and He knows that you cannot always do this. He has pardoned you. Instead, you shall read what you can of the Quran. He knows that some of you may be ill, others may be traveling in pursuit of GOD's provisions, and others may be striving in the cause of GOD. You shall read what you can of it, and observe the contact prayers (Salat), give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and lend GOD a loan of righteousness. Whatever good you send ahead on behalf of your souls, you will find it at GOD far better and generously rewarded. And implore GOD for forgiveness. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,رَبَّكَrabbakayour LordيَعْلَمُyaʿlamuHe knowsأَنَّكَannakathat youتَقُومُtaqūmu[you] stand / meditateأَدْنَىٰadnālesserمِنminthanثُلُثَىِthuluthayitwo-thirds (of)ٱلَّيْلِal-laylithe night,وَنِصْفَهُۥwaniṣ'fahuor half of itوَثُلُثَهُۥwathuluthahuor a third of itوَطَآئِفَةٌwaṭāifatunand (so do) a groupمِّنَminaofٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who (are)مَعَكَmaʿakawith you.وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd GodيُقَدِّرُyuqaddiruHe determines / measures / calculatesٱلَّيْلَal-laylathe nightوَٱلنَّهَارَwal-nahāraand the day.عَلِمَʿalimaHe knewأَنanthatلَّنlannotتُحْصُوهُtuḥ'ṣūhuyou [all] count it,فَتَابَfatābaso He pardoned / redeemedعَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumfor you [all],فَٱقْرَءُوا۟fa-iq'raūso recite / read [you all]مَاmāwhatتَيَسَّرَtayassarait is easy / you canمِنَminaofٱلْقُرْءَانِl-qur'ānithe Quran.عَلِمَʿalimaHe knewأَنanthatسَيَكُونُsayakūnuthere will beمِنكُمminkumamong you [all]مَّرْضَىٰmarḍāsick / illوَءَاخَرُونَwaākharūnaand othersيَضْرِبُونَyaḍribūnathey travelingفِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe landيَبْتَغُونَyabtaghūnathey seekingمِنminofفَضْلِfaḍli(the) bounty / provisionsٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,وَءَاخَرُونَwaākharūnaand othersيُقَـٰتِلُونَyuqātilūnathey fight (strive)فِىfīinسَبِيلِsabīli(the) causeٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God.فَٱقْرَءُوا۟fa-iq'raūSo recite / read [you all]مَاmāwhatتَيَسَّرَtayassarait is easy / you canمِنْهُmin'huof it,وَأَقِيمُوا۟wa-aqīmūand observe [you all]ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe Contact Prayer (Salat)وَءَاتُوا۟waātūand give [you all]ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe obligatory charity (Zakat)وَأَقْرِضُوا۟wa-aqriḍūand loan [you all]ٱللَّهَl-lahaGodقَرْضًاqarḍana loanحَسَنًاḥasananrighteousness.وَمَاwamāAnd whateverتُقَدِّمُوا۟tuqaddimūyou [all] send forthلِأَنفُسِكُمli-anfusikumfor yourselves / your soulsمِّنْminofخَيْرٍkhayringood,تَجِدُوهُtajidūhuyou [all] will find itعِندَʿindawithٱللَّهِl-lahiGod.هُوَhuwaItخَيْرًاkhayran(will be) betterوَأَعْظَمَwa-aʿẓamaand greaterأَجْرًاajran(in) reward.وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟wa-is'taghfirūAnd seek forgiveness [you all]ٱللَّهَl-laha(from) God.إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱللَّهَl-lahaGod (is)غَفُورٌghafūrunForgiver,رَّحِيمٌۢraḥīmunMerciful. ﴿٢٠﴾
