In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[69:1] The incontestable (event).
ٱلْحَآقَّةُal-ḥāqatuThe inevitable reality / incontestable! ﴿١﴾
[69:2] What an incontestable (event)!
مَاmāWhat (is)ٱلْحَآقَّةُl-ḥāqatuthe inevitable reality / incontestable? ﴿٢﴾
[69:3] It is truly incontestable.
وَمَآwamāAnd what*أَدْرَىٰكَadrākait will make you know (*do you know)مَاmāwhat (is)ٱلْحَآقَّةُl-ḥāqatuthe inevitable reality / incontestable? ﴿٣﴾
[69:4] Thamûd and 'Ãd disbelieved in the Shocker.
كَذَّبَتْkadhabat[It] denied / disbelievedثَمُودُthamūduThamudوَعَادٌۢwaʿādunand Adبِٱلْقَارِعَةِbil-qāriʿatiin the Striking Calamity / Shocker. ﴿٤﴾
[69:5] As for Thamûd, they were annihilated by the devastating (quake).
فَأَمَّاfa-ammāSo as forثَمُودُthamūduThamud,فَأُهْلِكُوا۟fa-uh'likūso they were annihilatedبِٱلطَّاغِيَةِbil-ṭāghiyatiby the thunderous blast / lightning. ﴿٥﴾
[69:6] As for 'Ãd, they were annihilated by a persistent, violent storm.
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāAnd as forعَادٌʿādunAd,فَأُهْلِكُوا۟fa-uh'likūso they were annihilatedبِرِيحٍbirīḥinby a wind صَرْصَرٍṣarṣarinfurious / violentعَاتِيَةٍʿātiyatinblowing with extraordinary force. ﴿٦﴾
[69:7] He unleashed it upon them for seven nights and eight days, violently. You could see the people tossed around like decayed palm trunks.
سَخَّرَهَاsakharahāHe subjected / imposed itعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon themسَبْعَsabʿa(for) sevenلَيَالٍlayālinnightsوَثَمَـٰنِيَةَwathamāniyataand eightأَيَّامٍayyāmindaysحُسُومًاḥusūman(in) succession / continuously,فَتَرَىfatarāso you (would) seeٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe peopleفِيهَاfīhāthereinصَرْعَىٰṣarʿāfallen down / thrownكَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they wereأَعْجَازُaʿjāzutrunks (of)نَخْلٍnakhlindate-palmsخَاوِيَةٍkhāwiyatinfallen / ruined / decayed. ﴿٧﴾
[69:8] Can you find any trace of them?
فَهَلْfahalThen doتَرَىٰtarāyou seeلَهُمlahumfrom themمِّنۢminanyبَاقِيَةٍbāqiyatinremains / trace? ﴿٨﴾
[69:9] Pharaoh, others before him, and the sinners (of Sodom) were wicked.
وَجَآءَwajāaAnd [he] cameفِرْعَوْنُfir'ʿawnuPharaoh,وَمَنwamanand thoseقَبْلَهُۥqablahubefore him,وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتُwal-mu'tafikātuand the overturned citiesبِٱلْخَاطِئَةِbil-khāṭi-atiwith the sinful. ﴿٩﴾
[69:10] They disobeyed the messenger of their Lord. Consequently, He requited them a devastating requital.
فَعَصَوْا۟faʿaṣawAnd they disobeyedرَسُولَrasūla(the) messengerرَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) their Lord,فَأَخَذَهُمْfa-akhadhahumso He punished / requited themأَخْذَةًakhdhatan(with) a punishment / requitalرَّابِيَةًrābiyatanexceeding (devastating). ﴿١٠﴾
[69:11] The flood was devastating, so we carried you on the floating (ark).
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weلَمَّاlammāwhenطَغَاṭaghā[it] overflowedٱلْمَآءُl-māuthe water,حَمَلْنَـٰكُمْḥamalnākumwe carried you [all]فِىfīinٱلْجَارِيَةِl-jāriyatithe floating (ship). ﴿١١﴾
[69:12] We rendered it a lesson for you, that any listening ear may understand.
لِنَجْعَلَهَاlinajʿalahāThat we may render itلَكُمْlakumfor you [all]تَذْكِرَةًtadhkiratana reminder / lessonوَتَعِيَهَآwataʿiyahāand [it] be conscious / remember / to learn of itأُذُنٌudhununan earوَٰعِيَةٌwāʿiyatunconscious / understand. ﴿١٢﴾
[69:13] When the horn is blown once.
فَإِذَاfa-idhāThen whenنُفِخَnufikhait blownفِىfīinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe hornنَفْخَةٌnafkhatuna blastوَٰحِدَةٌwāḥidatunsingle. ﴿١٣﴾
[69:14] The earth and the mountains will be carried off and crushed; utterly crushed.
وَحُمِلَتِwaḥumilatiAnd [it] (will be) carried offٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthوَٱلْجِبَالُwal-jibāluand the mountainsفَدُكَّتَاfadukkatāand both (will be) crushedدَكَّةًdakkatan(with) a crushingوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatansingle. ﴿١٤﴾
[69:15] That is the day when the inevitable event will come to pass.
فَيَوْمَئِذٍfayawma-idhinThen (on) that Dayوَقَعَتِwaqaʿati[it] (will come to) pass / (be) fulfilledٱلْوَاقِعَةُl-wāqiʿatuthe inevitable event. ﴿١٥﴾
[69:16] The heaven will crack, and fall apart.
وَٱنشَقَّتِwa-inshaqqatiAnd [it] (will) split / crackٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heaven,فَهِىَfahiyaso itيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhin(is on) that Dayوَاهِيَةٌwāhiyatunfrail / fall apart. ﴿١٦﴾
[69:17] The angels will be all around, and Your Lord's dominion will then encompass eight (universes).*
وَٱلْمَلَكُwal-malakuAnd the angelsعَلَىٰٓʿalāoverأَرْجَآئِهَاarjāihāits borders (all around),وَيَحْمِلُwayaḥmiluand [it] will bear / carryعَرْشَʿarsha(the) Throne / Dominionرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordفَوْقَهُمْfawqahumabove them,يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Day,ثَمَـٰنِيَةٌthamāniyatuneight. ﴿١٧﴾
*69:17 This earth is full of misery because of its physical distance from God, since it is in the seventh universe (7:143). In the Hereafter, an eighth universe will be created that will be even farther than our seventh universe; it will be called "Hell" (89:23).
[69:18] On that day, you will be exposed, nothing of you can be hidden.
يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinThat Day,تُعْرَضُونَtuʿ'raḍūnayou [all] will be exposed,لَاlānotتَخْفَىٰtakhfāit will be hiddenمِنكُمْminkumamong you [all]خَافِيَةٌkhāfiyatunany secret. ﴿١٨﴾
The Believers
[69:19] As for the one who receives his record with his right hand, he will say, "Come read my record.
فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as forمَنْman(him) whoأُوتِىَūtiyahe was givenكِتَـٰبَهُۥkitābahuhis recordبِيَمِينِهِۦbiyamīnihiin his right handفَيَقُولُfayaqūluand he will say,هَآؤُمُhāumu"Here / Come,ٱقْرَءُوا۟iq'raūread [you all]كِتَـٰبِيَهْkitābiyahmy record of it. ﴿١٩﴾
[69:20] "I did believe that I was going to be held accountable."
إِنِّىinnī"Indeed, Iظَنَنتُẓanantu[I] believed for sureأَنِّىannīthat Iمُلَـٰقٍmulāqinone who (will) meet / encounter*حِسَابِيَهْḥisābiyahmy account of it." ﴿٢٠﴾
[69:21] He has deserved a happy life.
فَهُوَfahuwaSo heفِىfī(will be) inعِيشَةٍʿīshatinexistence / lifeرَّاضِيَةٍrāḍiyatinsatisfied / happy. ﴿٢١﴾
[69:22] In an exalted Paradise.
فِىfīInجَنَّةٍjannatina Paradiseعَالِيَةٍʿāliyatinelevated / exalted. ﴿٢٢﴾
[69:23] Its fruits are within reach.
قُطُوفُهَاquṭūfuhāIts clusters of fruitsدَانِيَةٌdāniyatunhanging low / near. ﴿٢٣﴾
[69:24] Eat and drink happily in return for your works in days past.
كُلُوا۟kulū"Eat [you all]وَٱشْرَبُوا۟wa-ish'rabūand drink [you all]هَنِيٓـًٔۢاhanīan(in) satisfactionبِمَآbimāfor whatأَسْلَفْتُمْaslaftumit was sent before / had preceded you [all]فِىfīinٱلْأَيَّامِl-ayāmithe daysٱلْخَالِيَةِl-khāliyati[the] past." ﴿٢٤﴾
The Disbelievers
[69:25] As for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I never received my record.
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنْman(him) whoأُوتِىَūtiyahe was givenكِتَـٰبَهُۥkitābahuhis recordبِشِمَالِهِۦbishimālihiin his left handفَيَقُولُfayaqūluand he will say,يَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanī"Oh, I wishلَمْlamnotأُوتَūta[it] was givenكِتَـٰبِيَهْkitābiyahmy record of it. ﴿٢٥﴾
[69:26] "I wish I never knew my account.
وَلَمْwalam"And notأَدْرِadriI knewمَاmāwhat (is)حِسَابِيَهْḥisābiyahmy account of it. ﴿٢٦﴾
[69:27] "I wish my death was eternal.
يَـٰلَيْتَهَاyālaytahā"Oh, (I) wish itكَانَتِkānati[it] wasٱلْقَاضِيَةَl-qāḍiyatathe end. ﴿٢٧﴾
[69:28] "My money cannot help me.
مَآmā"Notأَغْنَىٰaghnā[it] availed / helpedعَنِّىʿannī[for] meمَالِيَهْmāliyahmy wealth / money [of it]. ﴿٢٨﴾
[69:29] "All my power is gone."
هَلَكَhalaka"It perished / goneعَنِّىʿannīfrom meسُلْطَـٰنِيَهْsul'ṭāniyahmy authority / power [of it]." ﴿٢٩﴾
[69:30] Take him and shackle him.
خُذُوهُkhudhūhu"Take him [you all]فَغُلُّوهُfaghullūhuand shackle him [you all]. ﴿٣٠﴾
[69:31] Burn him in Hell.
ثُمَّthummaThenٱلْجَحِيمَl-jaḥīma(into) the Hellfireصَلُّوهُṣallūhuburn him [you all]. ﴿٣١﴾
[69:32] In a chain that is seventy arms long, tie him up.
ثُمَّthummaThenفِىfīintoسِلْسِلَةٍsil'silatina chain,ذَرْعُهَاdharʿuhāits length (is)سَبْعُونَsabʿūnaseventyذِرَاعًاdhirāʿancubits / arms,فَٱسْلُكُوهُfa-us'lukūhuand bind him [you all]." ﴿٣٢﴾
[69:33] For he did not believe in GOD, Most Great.
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heكَانَkāna[he] used toلَاlānotيُؤْمِنُyu'minu[he] believeبِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Godٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmiMost Great. ﴿٣٣﴾
[69:34] Nor did he advocate the feeding of the poor.
وَلَاwalāAnd (did) notيَحُضُّyaḥuḍḍuhe advocateعَلَىٰʿalāforطَعَامِṭaʿāmi(the) feeding (of)ٱلْمِسْكِينِl-mis'kīnithe poor. ﴿٣٤﴾
[69:35] Consequently, he has no friend here.
فَلَيْسَfalaysaSo notلَهُlahufor himٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayهَـٰهُنَاhāhunāhereحَمِيمٌḥamīmuna friend. ﴿٣٥﴾
[69:36] Nor any food, except the bitter variety.
وَلَاwalāAnd notطَعَامٌṭaʿāmun(any) foodإِلَّاillāexceptمِنْminfromغِسْلِينٍghis'līnin(the) extremely hot / discharge of wounds / bitter [ones]. ﴿٣٦﴾
[69:37] Food for the sinners.
لَّاlāNotيَأْكُلُهُۥٓyakuluhuhe will eat itإِلَّاillāexceptٱلْخَـٰطِـُٔونَl-khāṭiūnathe sinners. ﴿٣٧﴾
[69:38] I swear by what you see.
فَلَآfalāBut nay!أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swearبِمَاbimāby whatتُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūnayou [all] see. ﴿٣٨﴾
[69:39] And what you do not see.
وَمَاwamāAnd whatلَاlānotتُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūnayou [all] see. ﴿٣٩﴾
[69:40] This is the utterance of an honorable messenger.
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, it (is)لَقَوْلُlaqawlusurely (the) word / utterance (of)رَسُولٍrasūlina messengerكَرِيمٍkarīminnoble / honorable. ﴿٤٠﴾
[69:41] Not the utterance of a poet; rarely do you believe.
وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwaitبِقَوْلِbiqawliever word / utterance (of)شَاعِرٍshāʿirina poet;قَلِيلًاqalīlanlittle / rarelyمَّاmā(is) whatتُؤْمِنُونَtu'minūnayou [all] believe. ﴿٤١﴾
[69:42] Nor the utterance of a soothsayer; rarely do you take heed.
وَلَاwalāAnd notبِقَوْلِbiqawliever a word / utterance (of)كَاهِنٍkāhinina soothsayer;قَلِيلًاqalīlanlittle / rarelyمَّاmā(is) whatتَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūnayou [all] take heed. ﴿٤٢﴾
[69:43] A revelation from the Lord of the universe.
تَنزِيلٌtanzīlunA revelationمِّنminfromرَّبِّrabbi(the) Lord (of)ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīnathe worlds / universe. ﴿٤٣﴾
Muhammad Forbidden from Issuing Any Religious Teachings
[69:44] Had he uttered any other teachings.
وَلَوْwalawAnd ifتَقَوَّلَtaqawwalahe fabricated a lie / a sayingعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāagainst usبَعْضَbaʿḍasome (other)ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِl-aqāwīli[the] words / sayings / commands / teachings, ﴿٤٤﴾
[69:45] We would have punished him.
لَأَخَذْنَاla-akhadhnācertainly we would have seized / taken / punishedمِنْهُmin'hufrom himبِٱلْيَمِينِbil-yamīniby the right hand. ﴿٤٥﴾
[69:46] We would have stopped the revelations to him.
ثُمَّthummaThenلَقَطَعْنَاlaqaṭaʿnāsurely we would have cut offمِنْهُmin'hufrom himٱلْوَتِينَl-watīnathe aorta. ﴿٤٦﴾
[69:47] None of you could have helped him.
فَمَاfamāAnd notمِنكُمminkumfrom you [all]مِّنْminanyأَحَدٍaḥadinoneعَنْهُʿanhufrom him (are)حَـٰجِزِينَḥājizīnaones to prevent / stop (it). ﴿٤٧﴾
[69:48] This is a reminder for the righteous.
وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, [it]لَتَذْكِرَةٌlatadhkiratunsurely a reminderلِّلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous [ones]. ﴿٤٨﴾
[69:49] We know; some of you are rejectors.
وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, weلَنَعْلَمُlanaʿlamusurely [we] knowأَنَّannathatمِنكُمminkumamong you [all] (are)مُّكَذِّبِينَmukadhibīnadeniers / rejectors. ﴿٤٩﴾
[69:50] It is but sorrow for the disbelievers.
وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, it (is)لَحَسْرَةٌlaḥasratunsurely a sorrowعَلَىʿalāuponٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers. ﴿٥٠﴾
[69:51] It is the absolute truth.
وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, it (is)لَحَقُّlaḥaqqusurely (the) truth (of)ٱلْيَقِينِl-yaqīni[the] certainty / absolute. ﴿٥١﴾
[69:52] Therefore, you shall glorify the name of your Lord, Most Great.
فَسَبِّحْfasabbiḥSo glorifyبِٱسْمِbi-is'miin (the) nameرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord,ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmiMost Great. ﴿٥٢﴾
