Sura 38: Saad (S) - Quran Inspector

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.

[38:1] S. (Saad),* and the Quran that contains the proof.**

صٓsadS. (Saad)وَٱلْقُرْءَانِwal-qur'āniand the Quranذِىdhīcontaining / possessor ofٱلذِّكْرِl-dhik'rithe reminder / proof. ﴿١﴾

*38:1 This Initial (Saad) occurs in suras 7, 19, & 38 a total of 152 times, 19x8 (Appendix 1). **38:1 The word "Zikr" is made distinct from the Quran and clearly points at the Quran's miraculous mathematical code. See 15:6, 9; 16:44; 21:2, 24; 26:5; & 36:11, 69.

[38:2] Those who disbelieve have plunged into arrogance and defiance.

بَلِbaliNay,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedفِىfī(are) inعِزَّةٍʿizzatinself-glory / arroganceوَشِقَاقٍwashiqāqinand opposition / defiance. ﴿٢﴾

[38:3] Many a generation before them we annihilated. They called for help; in vain.

كَمْkamHow manyأَهْلَكْنَاahlaknāwe destroyed / annihilatedمِنminfromقَبْلِهِمqablihimbefore themمِّنminofقَرْنٍqarnina generation,فَنَادَوا۟fanādawthen they called outوَّلَاتَwalātabut [it] passed*حِينَḥīnatime (*too late)مَنَاصٍmanāṣin(for) escape. ﴿٣﴾

[38:4] They wondered that a warner should come to them, from among them. The disbelievers said, "A magician; a liar.

وَعَجِبُوٓا۟waʿajibūAnd they wonder / find strangeأَنanthatجَآءَهُمjāahum[he] came to themمُّنذِرٌmundhiruna warnerمِّنْهُمْmin'humfrom (among) them. وَقَالَwaqālaAnd [he] saidٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers,هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)سَـٰحِرٌsāḥiruna magician,كَذَّابٌkadhābuna liar. ﴿٤﴾

[38:5] "Did he make the gods into one god? This is really strange."

أَجَعَلَajaʿala"Has he madeٱلْـَٔالِهَةَl-ālihatathe gods (into)إِلَـٰهًاilāhangodوَٰحِدًاwāḥidanone?إِنَّinnaIndeedهَـٰذَاhādhāthis (is)لَشَىْءٌlashayoncertainly a thingعُجَابٌʿujābunstrange." ﴿٥﴾

[38:6] The leaders announced, "Go and steadfastly persevere in worshiping your gods. This is what is desired.

وَٱنطَلَقَwa-inṭalaqaAnd [he] set outٱلْمَلَأُl-mala-uthe chiefs / leadersمِنْهُمْmin'humamong themأَنِanithat,ٱمْشُوا۟im'shū"Go about [you all],وَٱصْبِرُوا۟wa-iṣ'birūand be steadfast [you all]عَلَىٰٓʿalāoverءَالِهَتِكُمْālihatikumyour gods.إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰذَاhādhāthis (is)لَشَىْءٌlashayoncertainly a thingيُرَادُyurādu[it is] intended / desired. ﴿٦﴾

[38:7] "We never heard of this from the religion of our fathers. This is a lie.

مَاmā"Notسَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāwe heardبِهَـٰذَاbihādhāof thisفِىfīinٱلْمِلَّةِl-milatithe religionٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhiratithe last (*the former).إِنْinNot (is)هَـٰذَآhādhāthisإِلَّاillābutٱخْتِلَـٰقٌikh'tilāquna fabrication / forgery / lie. ﴿٧﴾

[38:8] "Why did the proof come down to him, instead of us?" Indeed, they are doubtful of My proof. Indeed, they have not yet tasted My retribution.

أَءُنزِلَa-unzila"Was it revealedعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himٱلذِّكْرُl-dhik'ruthe reminder / proofمِنۢminfrom*بَيْنِنَاbayninābetween / before us (*instead of us)?"بَلْbalNay,هُمْhumThey (are)فِىfīinشَكٍّshakkindoubtمِّنminofذِكْرِىdhik'rīMy message / reminder / proof.بَلbalNay,لَّمَّاlammāyetيَذُوقُوا۟yadhūqūthey tasteعَذَابِʿadhābiMy retribution. ﴿٨﴾

[38:9] Do they own the treasures of mercy of your Lord, the Almighty, the Grantor?

أَمْamOr isعِندَهُمْʿindahumwith themخَزَآئِنُkhazāinutreasures (of)رَحْمَةِraḥmatimercy (of)رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzithe Almighty,ٱلْوَهَّابِl-wahābithe Bestower / Grantor? ﴿٩﴾

[38:10] Do they possess the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them? Let them help themselves.

أَمْamOr isلَهُمlahumfor themمُّلْكُmul'ku(the) dominion / sovereignty (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَمَاwamāand whatever (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both them?فَلْيَرْتَقُوا۟falyartaqūThen let them ascend / riseفِىfībyٱلْأَسْبَـٰبِl-asbābithe relations / means. ﴿١٠﴾

[38:11] Instead, whatever forces they can muster - even if all their parties banded together - will be defeated.

جُندٌjundunForcesمَّاmāwhateverهُنَالِكَhunālikathere and thenمَهْزُومٌmahzūmun(will be) defeatedمِّنَminaamongٱلْأَحْزَابِl-aḥzābithe parties. ﴿١١﴾

[38:12] Disbelieving before them were the people of Noah, 'Ãd, and the mighty Pharaoh.

كَذَّبَتْkadhabat[It] denied / disbelievedقَبْلَهُمْqablahumbefore themقَوْمُqawmu(the) people (of)نُوحٍnūḥinNoahوَعَادٌwaʿādunand Adوَفِرْعَوْنُwafir'ʿawnuand Pharaoh,ذُوdhū(the) possessor ofٱلْأَوْتَادِl-awtādithe stakes. ﴿١٢﴾

[38:13] Also, Thamûd, the people of Lot, the dwellers of the Woods (of Midyan); those were the opponents.

وَثَمُودُwathamūduAnd Thamudوَقَوْمُwaqawmuand (the) people (of)لُوطٍlūṭinLot وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuand (the) companions / dwellers (of)لْـَٔيْكَةِal'aykatithe Woods.أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose (were)ٱلْأَحْزَابُl-aḥzābuthe parties / opponents. ﴿١٣﴾

[38:14] Each of them disbelieved the messengers and thus, My retribution was inevitable.

إِنinNotكُلٌّkullunall (of them)إِلَّاillābutكَذَّبَkadhabadenied / disbelievedٱلرُّسُلَl-rusulathe messengers,فَحَقَّfaḥaqqaso it was inevitableعِقَابِʿiqābiMy penalty / retribution. ﴿١٤﴾

[38:15] These people can expect a single blow, from which they never recover.

وَمَاwamāAnd notيَنظُرُyanẓuruit awaits / expectsهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāitheseإِلَّاillābutصَيْحَةًṣayḥatana blast / blowوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatanone / single;مَّاmānotلَهَاlahāfor itمِنminanyفَوَاقٍfawāqinpause / recovery. ﴿١٥﴾

[38:16] They challenged: "Our Lord, why do you not rush the retribution for us, before the Day of Reckoning."

وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they said,رَبَّنَاrabbanā"Our Lord!عَجِّلʿajjilRushلَّنَاlanāfor usقِطَّنَاqiṭṭanāour shareقَبْلَqablabeforeيَوْمِyawmi(the) Day (of)ٱلْحِسَابِl-ḥisābi[the] Reckoning." ﴿١٦﴾

[38:17] Be patient in the face of their utterances, and remember our servant David, the resourceful; he was obedient.

ٱصْبِرْiṣ'birBe patientعَلَىٰʿalāoverمَاmāwhatيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say,وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurand rememberعَبْدَنَاʿabdanāour servant,دَاوُۥدَdāwūdaDavid,ذَاdhā(the) possessor of*ٱلْأَيْدِl-aydithe hands (*resourceful).إِنَّهُۥٓinnahuIndeed, he (was)أَوَّابٌawwābunrepeatedly turning (in repentance) / obedient. ﴿١٧﴾

[38:18] We committed the mountains in his service, glorifying with him night and day.

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weسَخَّرْنَاsakharnā[we] committed to serve / subjectedٱلْجِبَالَl-jibālathe mountainsمَعَهُۥmaʿahuwith himيُسَبِّحْنَyusabbiḥ'nathey glorifyingبِٱلْعَشِىِّbil-ʿashiyiin the evening / nightوَٱلْإِشْرَاقِwal-ish'rāqiand [the] sunrise (day). ﴿١٨﴾

[38:19] Also the birds were committed to serve him; all were obedient to him.

وَٱلطَّيْرَwal-ṭayraAnd the birdsمَحْشُورَةًmaḥshūratangathered together / summoned,كُلٌّkullunallلَّهُۥٓlahuwith himأَوَّابٌawwābunrepeatedly turning (in repentance) / obedient. ﴿١٩﴾

[38:20] We strengthened his kingship, and endowed him with wisdom and good logic.

وَشَدَدْنَاwashadadnāAnd we strengthenedمُلْكَهُۥmul'kahuhis kingdom / kingshipوَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُwaātaynāhuand we gave himٱلْحِكْمَةَl-ḥik'matathe wisdomوَفَصْلَwafaṣlaand detailed / decisive / judgment*ٱلْخِطَابِl-khiṭābi[the] argument / speech (*detailed reasoning / good logic). ﴿٢٠﴾

[38:21] Have you received news of the feuding men who sneaked into his sanctuary?

وَهَلْwahalAnd hasأَتَىٰكَatāka[it] came to youنَبَؤُا۟naba-u(the) news (of)ٱلْخَصْمِl-khaṣmithe feuding,إِذْidhwhenتَسَوَّرُوا۟tasawwarūthey climbed over the wall / sneaked (into)ٱلْمِحْرَابَl-miḥ'rābathe prayer chamber / sanctuary? ﴿٢١﴾

[38:22] When they entered his room, he was startled. They said, "Have no fear. We are feuding with one another, and we are seeking your fair judgment. Do not wrong us, and guide us in the right path.

إِذْidhWhenدَخَلُوا۟dakhalūthey enteredعَلَىٰʿalāuponدَاوُۥدَdāwūdaDavidفَفَزِعَfafaziʿaand he was startledمِنْهُمْmin'humfrom them.قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,لَاlā"(Do) notتَخَفْtakhafyou fear.خَصْمَانِkhaṣmāni(We are) two litigants / feuding,بَغَىٰbaghā[he] was unjust / oppressedبَعْضُنَاbaʿḍunāsome of us*عَلَىٰʿalātoبَعْضٍbaʿḍinsome other (*one to another),فَٱحْكُمfa-uḥ'kumso judgeبَيْنَنَاbaynanābetween usبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truth (*truthfully / equitably)وَلَاwalāand (do) notتُشْطِطْtush'ṭiṭyou be unjustوَٱهْدِنَآwa-ih'dināand guide usإِلَىٰilātoسَوَآءِsawāi(the) rightٱلصِّرَٰطِl-ṣirāṭi[the] path. ﴿٢٢﴾

[38:23] "This brother of mine owns ninety-nine* sheep, while I own one sheep. He wants to mix my sheep with his, and continues to pressure me."

إِنَّinna"Indeed,هَـٰذَآhādhāthisأَخِىakhīmy brother,لَهُۥlahufor he (has)تِسْعٌtis'ʿunnine*وَتِسْعُونَwatis'ʿūnaninety (*ninety-nine)نَعْجَةًnaʿjatansheepوَلِىَwaliyawhile for meنَعْجَةٌnaʿjatunsheepوَٰحِدَةٌwāḥidatunone;فَقَالَfaqālaso he said,أَكْفِلْنِيهَاakfil'nīhā"Entrust it to me,"وَعَزَّنِىwaʿazzanīand he overpowered / prevailed over meفِىfīinٱلْخِطَابِl-khiṭābithe speech / argument." ﴿٢٣﴾

*38:23 This is the only place where the number 99 occurs. Thirty different numbers are mentioned in the Quran, and their total comes to 162146, 19x8534. See Appendix 1.

[38:24] He said, "He is being unfair to you by asking to combine your sheep with his. Most people who combine their properties treat each other unfairly, except those who believe and work righteousness, and these are so few." Afterwards, David wondered if he made the right judgment. He thought that we were testing him. He then implored his Lord for forgiveness, bowed down, and repented.*

قَالَqālaHe said,لَقَدْlaqad"Certainly,ظَلَمَكَẓalamakahe wronged youبِسُؤَالِbisuāliby demanding / askingنَعْجَتِكَnaʿjatikayour sheepإِلَىٰilāto (be added to)نِعَاجِهِۦniʿājihihis sheep.وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,كَثِيرًاkathīranmanyمِّنَminaofٱلْخُلَطَآءِl-khulaṭāithe combiners (of property)لَيَبْغِىlayabghīcertainly [he] oppressesبَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them*عَلَىٰʿalāover*بَعْضٍbaʿḍinsome other (*each other),إِلَّاillāexceptٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanū[they] believedوَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand [they] didٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥāti[the] righteous deedsوَقَلِيلٌwaqalīlunand fewمَّاmā[that] (are)هُمْhumthey."وَظَنَّwaẓannaAnd [he] thoughtدَاوُۥدُdāwūduDavidأَنَّمَاannamāthat onlyفَتَنَّـٰهُfatannāhuwe tested him,فَٱسْتَغْفَرَfa-is'taghfaraso he asked forgivenessرَبَّهُۥrabbahuhis Lordوَخَرَّwakharraand he fell downرَاكِعًاrākiʿanbowingوَأَنَابَwa-anābaand he turned (to God) in repentance repeatedly with sincere deeds. ﴿٢٤﴾

*38:24 In this clear example, 99 on one side vs 1 on the other side, David's extreme care to render the correct judgment caused him to ask forgiveness. Are we this careful?

[38:25] We forgave him in this matter. We have granted him a position of honor with us, and a beautiful abode.

فَغَفَرْنَاfaghafarnāSo we forgaveلَهُۥlahufor himذَٰلِكَdhālikathat.وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,لَهُۥlahufor himعِندَنَاʿindanāwith usلَزُلْفَىٰlazul'fāsurely is a near access / position of honorوَحُسْنَwaḥus'naand a goodمَـَٔابٍmaābinplace of return (abode). ﴿٢٥﴾

[38:26] O David, we have made you a ruler on earth. Therefore, you shall judge among the people equitably, and do not follow your personal opinion, lest it diverts you from the way of GOD. Surely, those who stray off the way of GOD incur severe retribution for forgetting the Day of Reckoning.

يَـٰدَاوُۥدُyādāwūduO David!إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weجَعَلْنَـٰكَjaʿalnāka[we] made youخَلِيفَةًkhalīfatanan alternative / vicegerent / rulerفِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth,فَٱحْكُمfa-uḥ'kumso judgeبَيْنَbaynabetweenٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi[the] peopleبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truth (*truthfully / equitably)وَلَاwalāand (do) notتَتَّبِعِtattabiʿiyou followٱلْهَوَىٰl-hawāthe desire / whim / opinion,فَيُضِلَّكَfayuḍillakathen it will mislead youعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِsabīli(the) wayٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God.إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoيَضِلُّونَyaḍillūna[they] go astrayعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِsabīli(the) wayٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,لَهُمْlahumfor them (is)عَذَابٌʿadhābuna retributionشَدِيدٌۢshadīdunsevereبِمَاbimābecauseنَسُوا۟nasūthey forgotيَوْمَyawma(the) Day (of)ٱلْحِسَابِl-ḥisābithe Reckoning. ﴿٢٦﴾

[38:27] We did not create the heaven and the earth, and everything between them, in vain. Such is the thinking of those who disbelieve. Therefore, woe to those who disbelieve; they will suffer in Hell.

وَمَاwamāAnd notخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heavenوَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earthوَمَاwamāand whatever (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of themبَـٰطِلًاbāṭilan(in) vain. ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)ظَنُّẓannu(the) assumption (of)ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelieved.فَوَيْلٌfawaylunSo woeلِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelieved,مِنَminafromٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire / Hell. ﴿٢٧﴾

[38:28] Shall we treat those who believe and lead a righteous life as we treat those who commit evil on earth? Shall we treat the righteous as we treat the wicked?

أَمْamOr shallنَجْعَلُnajʿaluwe regard / treatٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanū[they] believedوَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand [they] didٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥāti[the] righteous deedsكَٱلْمُفْسِدِينَkal-muf'sidīnalike those who spread corruption فِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth?أَمْamOr shallنَجْعَلُnajʿaluwe regard / treatٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous [ones]كَٱلْفُجَّارِkal-fujārilike the wicked? ﴿٢٨﴾

[38:29] This is a scripture that we sent down to you, that is sacred - perhaps they reflect on its verses. Those who possess intelligence will take heed.

كِتَـٰبٌkitābun(This is) a book / scriptureأَنزَلْنَـٰهُanzalnāhuwe revealed itإِلَيْكَilaykato you,مُبَـٰرَكٌmubārakunone which is blessed / sacred,لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟liyaddabbarūthat they may ponderءَايَـٰتِهِۦāyātihiits versesوَلِيَتَذَكَّرَwaliyatadhakkaraand that [he] may be remindedأُو۟لُوا۟ulūthose who possessٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِl-albābithe understanding / intelligence. ﴿٢٩﴾

[38:30] To David we granted Solomon; a good and obedient servant.

وَوَهَبْنَاwawahabnāAnd we bestowed / grantedلِدَاوُۥدَlidāwūdato DavidسُلَيْمَـٰنَsulaymānaSolomon,نِعْمَniʿ'maa goodٱلْعَبْدُl-ʿabdu[the] servant.إِنَّهُۥٓinnahuIndeed, he (was)أَوَّابٌawwābunrepeatedly turning (in repentance) / obedient. ﴿٣٠﴾

[38:31] One day he became preoccupied with beautiful horses, until the night fell.

إِذْidhWhenعُرِضَʿuriḍait was displayed / presentedعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himبِٱلْعَشِىِّbil-ʿashiyiin the afternoon / eveningٱلصَّـٰفِنَـٰتُl-ṣāfinātuthe well-bred (beautiful)ٱلْجِيَادُl-jiyādu[the] horses. ﴿٣١﴾

[38:32] He then said, "I enjoyed the material things more than I enjoyed worshiping my Lord, until the sun was gone.*

فَقَالَfaqālaAnd he said,إِنِّىٓinnī"Indeed, Iأَحْبَبْتُaḥbabtu[I] loved / preferredحُبَّḥubba(the) love (of)ٱلْخَيْرِl-khayrithe wealth / good things / material thingsعَنʿanoverذِكْرِdhik'ri(the) remembrance (of)رَبِّىrabbīmy Lordحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilتَوَارَتْtawāratit was hidden / disappeared*بِٱلْحِجَابِbil-ḥijābiby the veil (*the sun set and night fell); ﴿٣٢﴾

*38:32 Solomon missed his afternoon prayer because of his horses. To nullify Satan's possible claim that Solomon loved his horses more than loving God, he got rid of his horses.

[38:33] "Bring them back." (To bid farewell,) he rubbed their legs and necks.

رُدُّوهَاruddūhā"Return them [you all]عَلَىَّʿalayyato me."فَطَفِقَfaṭafiqaThen he beganمَسْحًۢاmasḥanto rubبِٱلسُّوقِbil-sūqiover the legsوَٱلْأَعْنَاقِwal-aʿnāqiand the necks. ﴿٣٣﴾

[38:34] We thus put Solomon to the test; we blessed him with vast material wealth, but he steadfastly submitted.*

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyفَتَنَّاfatannāwe testedسُلَيْمَـٰنَsulaymānaSolomon,وَأَلْقَيْنَاwa-alqaynāand we gifted / grantedعَلَىٰʿalāuponكُرْسِيِّهِۦkur'siyyihihis throne / power / dominionجَسَدًاjasadana body / structure / frame / corps;ثُمَّthummathenأَنَابَanābahe steadfastly submitted / turned (to God) in repentance repeatedly with sincere deeds. ﴿٣٤﴾

*38:34 & 41 Solomon and Job represent both ends of the testing spectrum. We are put to the test through wealth, health, or lack of them, to see if we worship God alone under all circumstances.

[38:35] He said, "My Lord, forgive me, and grant me a kingship never attained by anyone else. You are the Grantor."

قَالَqālaHe said,رَبِّrabbi"My Lord!ٱغْفِرْigh'firForgiveلِىlī[for] meوَهَبْwahab(and) grantلِىlī[for] meمُلْكًاmul'kana kingdom / kingship,لَّاlānotيَنۢبَغِىyanbaghīit befittingلِأَحَدٍli-aḥadinfor anyoneمِّنۢminfromبَعْدِىٓbaʿdīafter me.إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, [You]أَنتَantaYou (are)ٱلْوَهَّابُl-wahābuthe Bestower / Grantor." ﴿٣٥﴾

[38:36] We (answered his prayer and) committed the wind at his disposal, pouring rain wherever he wanted.

فَسَخَّرْنَاfasakharnāThen we subjected / committed to serveلَهُlahufor himٱلرِّيحَl-rīḥathe windتَجْرِىtajrīit flowsبِأَمْرِهِۦbi-amrihiby his command,رُخَآءًrukhāangently,حَيْثُḥaythuwhereverأَصَابَaṣābahe chose. ﴿٣٦﴾

[38:37] And the devils, building and diving.

وَٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَwal-shayāṭīnaAnd the devils,كُلَّkullaeveryبَنَّآءٍbannāinbuilderوَغَوَّاصٍwaghawwāṣinand diver, ﴿٣٧﴾

[38:38] Others were placed at his disposal.

وَءَاخَرِينَwaākharīnaAnd othersمُقَرَّنِينَmuqarranīna[ones] boundفِىfīinٱلْأَصْفَادِl-aṣfādi[the] chains. ﴿٣٨﴾

[38:39] "This is our provision to you; you may give generously, or withhold, without limits."

هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)عَطَآؤُنَاʿaṭāunāour gift,فَٱمْنُنْfa-um'nunso grantأَوْaworأَمْسِكْamsikwithholdبِغَيْرِbighayri[for] withoutحِسَابٍḥisābinan account / a tab / a limit." ﴿٣٩﴾

[38:40] He has deserved an honorable position with us, and a wonderful abode.

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,لَهُۥlahufor himعِندَنَاʿindanāwith usلَزُلْفَىٰlazul'fāsurely is a near access / position of honorوَحُسْنَwaḥus'naand a goodمَـَٔابٍmaābinplace of return (abode). ﴿٤٠﴾

[38:41] Remember our servant Job: he called upon his Lord, "The devil has afflicted me with hardship and pain."

وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurAnd rememberعَبْدَنَآʿabdanāour servantأَيُّوبَayyūbaJob,إِذْidhwhenنَادَىٰnādāhe calledرَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis Lord,أَنِّىannī"That [I],مَسَّنِىَmassaniya[he] touched / afflicted meٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُl-shayṭānuthe devilبِنُصْبٍbinuṣ'binwith distress / hardshipوَعَذَابٍwaʿadhābinand suffering / pain." ﴿٤١﴾

[38:42] "Strike the ground with your foot. A spring will give you healing and a drink."

ٱرْكُضْur'kuḍ"Strike / kick / stompبِرِجْلِكَbirij'likawith your foot.هَـٰذَاhādhāThisمُغْتَسَلٌۢmugh'tasalunspringبَارِدٌbāridunsoothe / healوَشَرَابٌwasharābunand a drink." ﴿٤٢﴾

[38:43] We restored his family for him; twice as many. Such is our mercy; a reminder for those who possess intelligence.

وَوَهَبْنَاwawahabnāAnd we bestowed / granted (restored)لَهُۥٓlahuto himأَهْلَهُۥahlahuhis familyوَمِثْلَهُمwamith'lahumand (the) equivalent / likeness / same as themمَّعَهُمْmaʿahumwith them,رَحْمَةًraḥmatana mercyمِّنَّاminnāfrom usوَذِكْرَىٰwadhik'rāand a reminderلِأُو۟لِىli-ulīfor possessors ofٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِl-albābithe understanding / intelligence. ﴿٤٣﴾

[38:44] "Now, you shall travel the land and preach the message, to fulfill your pledge." We found him steadfast. What a good servant! He was a submitter.

وَخُذْwakhudh"And take / utilizeبِيَدِكَbiyadikain your hand / with your experience (of)ضِغْثًاḍigh'thanconfusionفَٱضْرِبfa-iḍ'riband travel / serve [as an example]بِّهِۦbihithereinوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَحْنَثْtaḥnathyou commit perjury / break (your) oath."إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weوَجَدْنَـٰهُwajadnāhu[we] found himصَابِرًاṣābiransteadfast,نِّعْمَniʿ'maa good / excellentٱلْعَبْدُl-ʿabdu[the] servant.إِنَّهُۥٓinnahuIndeed, heأَوَّابٌawwābunsincere / repeatedly turning (to God) / obedient / submitter. ﴿٤٤﴾

[38:45] Remember also our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They were resourceful, and possessed vision.

وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurAnd rememberعِبَـٰدَنَآʿibādanāour servantsإِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīmaAbrahamوَإِسْحَـٰقَwa-is'ḥāqaand Isaacوَيَعْقُوبَwayaʿqūbaand Jacob,أُو۟لِىulīpossessors of*ٱلْأَيْدِىl-aydīthe hands (*resourceful)وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِwal-abṣāriand the vision. ﴿٤٥﴾

[38:46] We bestowed upon them a great blessing: awareness of the Hereafter.

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, weأَخْلَصْنَـٰهُمakhlaṣnāhum[we] purified / distinguished / chose themبِخَالِصَةٍbikhāliṣatinfor a distinct quality;ذِكْرَىdhik'rāremembrance / awareness (of)ٱلدَّارِl-dārithe abode (Hereafter). ﴿٤٦﴾

[38:47] They were chosen, for they were among the most righteous.

وَإِنَّهُمْwa-innahumAnd indeed, they (are)عِندَنَاʿindanāto usلَمِنَlaminasurely amongٱلْمُصْطَفَيْنَl-muṣ'ṭafaynathe chosen / righteous [ones];ٱلْأَخْيَارِl-akhyārithe best (*most righteous). ﴿٤٧﴾

[38:48] Remember Ismail, Elisha, and Zal-Kifl; among the most righteous.

وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurAnd rememberإِسْمَـٰعِيلَis'māʿīlaIsmailوَٱلْيَسَعَwal-yasaʿaand Elishaوَذَاwadhā and Dhā- / possessor of*ٱلْكِفْلِl-kif'liAl-Kifl / the portion / the responsibility (*Ezekiel)وَكُلٌّwakullunand all (are)مِّنَminaamongٱلْأَخْيَارِl-akhyārithe best (*most righteous). ﴿٤٨﴾

[38:49] This is a reminder: The righteous have deserved a wonderful destiny.

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)ذِكْرٌdhik'runa reminder.وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,لِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous [ones]لَحُسْنَlaḥus'nasurely is a goodمَـَٔابٍmaābinplace of return (destiny). ﴿٤٩﴾

[38:50] The gardens of Eden will open up their gates for them.

جَنَّـٰتِjannātiGardens (of)عَدْنٍʿadninEden,مُّفَتَّحَةًmufattaḥatanopenedلَّهُمُlahumufor themٱلْأَبْوَٰبُl-abwābuthe gates. ﴿٥٠﴾

[38:51] Relaxing therein, they will be given many kinds of fruits and drinks.

مُتَّكِـِٔينَmuttakiīnaThose reclining / relaxingفِيهَاfīhātherein,يَدْعُونَyadʿūnathey will callفِيهَاfīhāthereinبِفَـٰكِهَةٍbifākihatinfor fruitsكَثِيرَةٍkathīratinmanyوَشَرَابٍwasharābinand drinks. ﴿٥١﴾

[38:52] They will have wonderful spouses.

وَعِندَهُمْwaʿindahumAnd with themقَـٰصِرَٰتُqāṣirāturestraining*ٱلطَّرْفِl-ṭarfithe glance / looking (*beautiful / wonderful spouses)أَتْرَابٌatrābunsuitable / well-matched. ﴿٥٢﴾

[38:53] This is what you have deserved on the Day of Reckoning.

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)مَاmāwhatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou [all] are promisedلِيَوْمِliyawmifor (the) Day (of)ٱلْحِسَابِl-ḥisābithe Reckoning. ﴿٥٣﴾

[38:54] Our provisions are inexhaustible.

إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰذَاhādhāthis (is)لَرِزْقُنَاlariz'qunāsurely our provision;مَاmānotلَهُۥlahufor itمِنminanyنَّفَادٍnafādindepletion / exhaustion. ﴿٥٤﴾

[38:55] As for the transgressors, they have incurred a miserable destiny.

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis!وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,لِلطَّـٰغِينَlilṭṭāghīnafor the transgressors (is)لَشَرَّlasharrasurely an evil / worst / miserableمَـَٔابٍmaābinplace of return (destiny). ﴿٥٥﴾

[38:56] Hell is where they burn; what a miserable abode!

جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell;يَصْلَوْنَهَاyaṣlawnahāthey will burn thereinفَبِئْسَfabi'saand miserableٱلْمِهَادُl-mihāduthe resting place / abode. ﴿٥٦﴾

[38:57] What they taste therein will be hellish drinks and bitter food.

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis!فَلْيَذُوقُوهُfalyadhūqūhuThen let them taste it,حَمِيمٌḥamīmunboiling fluidوَغَسَّاقٌwaghassāqunand purulence / bitter food. ﴿٥٧﴾

[38:58] And much more of the same kind.

وَءَاخَرُwaākharuAnd otherمِنminofشَكْلِهِۦٓshaklihiits likeness (same)أَزْوَٰجٌazwājunkinds. ﴿٥٨﴾

[38:59] "This is a group to be thrown into Hell with you." They will not be welcomed (by the residents of Hell). They have deserved to burn in the hellfire.

هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)فَوْجٌfawjuna company / groupمُّقْتَحِمٌmuq'taḥimunone who rushes (thrown)مَّعَكُمْmaʿakum(in) with you [all]."لَاlāNoمَرْحَبًۢاmarḥabanwelcomeبِهِمْbihimfor them.إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyصَالُوا۟ṣālū[they] burnedٱلنَّارِl-nāri(in) the Fire / Hell. ﴿٥٩﴾

[38:60] The newcomers will respond, "Nor are you welcomed. You are the ones who preceded us and misled us. Therefore, suffer this miserable end."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,بَلْbal"Nay!أَنتُمْantumYou [all]لَاlānotمَرْحَبًۢاmarḥabanwelcomeبِكُمْbikumfor you [all].أَنتُمْantumYou [all]قَدَّمْتُمُوهُqaddamtumūhu[you all] brought this / preceded thisلَنَاlanāupon us / for us.فَبِئْسَfabi'saSo miserableٱلْقَرَارُl-qarāruthe settlement (end)." ﴿٦٠﴾

[38:61] They will also say, "Our Lord, these are the ones who led us into this; double the retribution of hellfire for them."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,رَبَّنَاrabbanā"Our Lord,مَنmanwhoeverقَدَّمَqaddamahe brought about / precededلَنَاlanāupon us / for usهَـٰذَاhādhāthis;فَزِدْهُfazid'huso increase for himعَذَابًاʿadhābana retributionضِعْفًاḍiʿ'fandoubleفِىfīinٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire." ﴿٦١﴾

[38:62] They will say, "How come we do not see (in Hell) people we used to count among the wicked?

وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they said,مَاmā"What (is)لَنَاlanāfor usلَاlānotنَرَىٰnarāwe seeرِجَالًاrijālanmenكُنَّاkunnāwe used toنَعُدُّهُمnaʿudduhum[we] count themمِّنَminaamongٱلْأَشْرَارِl-ashrārithe wicked? ﴿٦٢﴾

[38:63] "We used to ridicule them; we used to turn our eyes away from them."

أَتَّخَذْنَـٰهُمْattakhadhnāhum"Have we taken themسِخْرِيًّاsikh'riyyan(in) mockery / ridiculeأَمْamor hasزَاغَتْzāghat[it] turned awayعَنْهُمُʿanhumufrom themٱلْأَبْصَـٰرُl-abṣāruthe eyes?" ﴿٦٣﴾

[38:64] This is a predetermined fact: the people of Hell will feud with one another.

إِنَّinnaIndeed,ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat (is)لَحَقٌّlaḥaqqunsurely (the) truthتَخَاصُمُtakhāṣumu[it] feudingأَهْلِahli(the) people (of)ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire / Hell. ﴿٦٤﴾

[38:65] Say, "I warn you; there is no other god beside GOD, the One, the Supreme.

قُلْqulSay,إِنَّمَآinnamā"Onlyأَنَا۠anāI amمُنذِرٌmundhiruna warner,وَمَاwamāand notمِنْmin(is there) anyإِلَـٰهٍilāhingodإِلَّاillāexceptٱللَّهُl-lahuGod,ٱلْوَٰحِدُl-wāḥiduthe Oneٱلْقَهَّارُl-qahāruthe Supreme. ﴿٦٥﴾

[38:66] "The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them; the Almighty, the Forgiving."

رَبُّrabbuLord (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَمَاwamāand whatever (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of them,ٱلْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzuthe Almighty,ٱلْغَفَّـٰرُl-ghafāruthe Forgiving." ﴿٦٦﴾

[38:67] Say, "Here is awesome news.

قُلْqulSay,هُوَhuwa"It (is)نَبَؤٌا۟naba-ona newsعَظِيمٌʿaẓīmungreat / awesome. ﴿٦٧﴾

[38:68] "That you are totally oblivious to.

أَنتُمْantum"You [all]عَنْهُʿanhufrom itمُعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna[those who] turn away / are oblivious. ﴿٦٨﴾

[38:69] "I had no knowledge previously, about the feud in the High Society.*

مَاmā"Notكَانَkānathere wasلِىَliyafor meمِنْminanyعِلْمٍۭʿil'minknowledgeبِٱلْمَلَإِbil-mala-iin the chiefs / assembly / Society,ٱلْأَعْلَىٰٓl-aʿlāthe exalted / Highإِذْidhwhen [in the past]يَخْتَصِمُونَyakhtaṣimūnathey feuding. ﴿٦٩﴾

*38:69 The feud in the High Society was triggered by Satan's challenge to God's absolute authority. This is definitely the most important event in the history of the human race. We failed to make a firm stand regarding God's absolute authority. This life represents the third and final chance to redeem ourselves (See the Introduction and Appendix 7).

[38:70] "I am inspired that my sole mission is to deliver the warnings to you."

إِنin"Notيُوحَىٰٓyūḥāit is revealed / inspiredإِلَىَّilayyato meإِلَّآillāexceptأَنَّمَآannamāthat onlyأَنَا۠anāI amنَذِيرٌnadhīruna warnerمُّبِينٌmubīnunclear." ﴿٧٠﴾

[38:71] Your Lord said to the angels, "I am creating a human being from clay.

إِذْidhWhenقَالَqāla[He] saidرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordلِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِlil'malāikatito the angels,إِنِّىinnī"Indeed, I amخَـٰلِقٌۢkhāliquncreatingبَشَرًاbasharana human beingمِّنminfromطِينٍṭīninclay. ﴿٧١﴾

[38:72] "Once I design him, and blow into him from My spirit, you shall fall prostrate before him."

فَإِذَاfa-idhā"So whenسَوَّيْتُهُۥsawwaytuhuI fashioned himوَنَفَخْتُwanafakhtuand [I] breathedفِيهِfīhiinto himمِنminfromرُّوحِىrūḥīMy spirit,فَقَعُوا۟faqaʿūthen fall down [you all]لَهُۥlahuto himسَـٰجِدِينَsājidīna[ones] prostrating." ﴿٧٢﴾

[38:73] The angels fell prostrate, all of them,

فَسَجَدَfasajadaSo [it] prostratedٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe angelsكُلُّهُمْkulluhumall of themأَجْمَعُونَajmaʿūnaall together. ﴿٧٣﴾

[38:74] except Satan; he refused, and was too arrogant, unappreciative.

إِلَّآillāExceptإِبْلِيسَib'līsaIblis (Satan);ٱسْتَكْبَرَis'takbarahe was arrogantوَكَانَwakānaand he becameمِنَminaofٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers / unappreciative [ones]. ﴿٧٤﴾

[38:75] He said, "O Satan, what prevented you from prostrating before what I created with My hands? Are you too arrogant? Have you rebelled?"

قَالَqālaHe said,يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُyāib'līsu"O Iblis (Satan)!مَاmāWhatمَنَعَكَmanaʿaka[it] prevented youأَنanthatتَسْجُدَtasjudayou prostrateلِمَاlimāto whatخَلَقْتُkhalaqtuI createdبِيَدَىَّbiyadayyawith My hands?أَسْتَكْبَرْتَastakbartaHave you turned arrogant?أَمْamOr (have)كُنتَkuntayou becameمِنَminaofٱلْعَالِينَl-ʿālīnathe self-exalting ones / tyrants?" ﴿٧٥﴾

[38:76] He said, "I am better than he; You created me from fire, and created him from clay."

قَالَqālaHe said,أَنَا۠anā"I amخَيْرٌkhayrunbetterمِّنْهُmin'huthan him.خَلَقْتَنِىkhalaqtanīYou created meمِنminfromنَّارٍnārinfireوَخَلَقْتَهُۥwakhalaqtahuand You created himمِنminfromطِينٍṭīninclay." ﴿٧٦﴾

[38:77] He said, "Therefore, you must be exiled, you will be banished.

قَالَqālaHe said,فَٱخْرُجْfa-ukh'ruj"Then get outمِنْهَاmin'hātherefrom,فَإِنَّكَfa-innakafor indeed, you (are)رَجِيمٌrajīmunexpelled / banished. ﴿٧٧﴾

[38:78] "You have incurred My condemnation until the Day of Judgment."

وَإِنَّwa-inna"And indeed,عَلَيْكَʿalaykaupon you (is)لَعْنَتِىٓlaʿnatīMy condemnationإِلَىٰilāuntilيَوْمِyawmi(the) Day (of)ٱلدِّينِl-dīni[the] Judgment." ﴿٧٨﴾

[38:79] He said, "My Lord, respite me till the Day of Resurrection."

قَالَqālaHe said,رَبِّrabbi"My Lord!فَأَنظِرْنِىٓfa-anẓir'nīThen respite meإِلَىٰilāuntilيَوْمِyawmi(the) Dayيُبْعَثُونَyub'ʿathūnathey are resurrected." ﴿٧٩﴾

[38:80] He said, "You are respited.

قَالَqālaHe said,فَإِنَّكَfa-innaka"Then indeed, you (are)مِنَminaofٱلْمُنظَرِينَl-munẓarīnathose given respite. ﴿٨٠﴾

[38:81] "Until the appointed day."

إِلَىٰilā"Untilيَوْمِyawmi(the) Day (of)ٱلْوَقْتِl-waqtithe timeٱلْمَعْلُومِl-maʿlūmithe one known / specified / appointed." ﴿٨١﴾

[38:82] He said, "I swear by Your majesty, that I will send them all astray.

قَالَqālaHe said,فَبِعِزَّتِكَfabiʿizzatika"Then by Your might / majestyلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْla-ugh'wiyannahumsurely I will mislead themأَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall. ﴿٨٢﴾

[38:83] "Except Your worshipers who are devoted absolutely to You alone."

إِلَّاillā"ExceptعِبَادَكَʿibādakaYour servantsمِنْهُمُmin'humuamong themٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathose who are truly sincere / exclusively and absolutely devoted." ﴿٨٣﴾

[38:84] He said, "This is the truth, and the truth is all that I utter.

قَالَqālaHe said,فَٱلْحَقُّfal-ḥaqu"Then (it is) the truthوَٱلْحَقَّwal-ḥaqaand the truthأَقُولُaqūluI say / utter. ﴿٨٤﴾

[38:85] I will fill Hell with you and all those who follow you.

لَأَمْلَأَنَّla-amla-anna"Surely I will fillجَهَنَّمَjahannamaHellمِنكَminkawith youوَمِمَّنwamimmanand from (those) whoتَبِعَكَtabiʿaka[he] followed youمِنْهُمْmin'humamong themأَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall together." ﴿٨٥﴾

[38:86] Say, "I do not ask you for any wage, and I am not an imposter.

قُلْqulSay,مَآmā"NotأَسْـَٔلُكُمْasalukumI ask you [all]عَلَيْهِʿalayhifor itمِنْminanyأَجْرٍajrinpayment / wage,وَمَآwamāand notأَنَا۠anāI amمِنَminaofٱلْمُتَكَلِّفِينَl-mutakalifīnathe imposters. ﴿٨٦﴾

[38:87] "This is a reminder for the world.

إِنْin"Notهُوَhuwait (is)إِلَّاillāexceptذِكْرٌdhik'runa reminderلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds. ﴿٨٧﴾

[38:88] "And you will certainly find out in awhile."

وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّwalataʿlamunna"And surely you [all] will knowنَبَأَهُۥnaba-ahuits informationبَعْدَbaʿdaafterحِينٍۭḥīnina time." ﴿٨٨﴾
