Sura 21: Al-Anbyã’ (The Prophets) - Quran Inspector

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.

[21:1] Fast approaching is the reckoning for the people, but they are oblivious, averse.

ٱقْتَرَبَiq'taraba[It] approachedلِلنَّاسِlilnnāsifor [the] peopleحِسَابُهُمْḥisābuhumtheir reckoning,وَهُمْwahumwhile they (are)فِىfīinغَفْلَةٍghaflatinheedlessness / obliviousمُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna[those who are] turning away / averse. ﴿١﴾

[21:2] When a proof comes to them from their Lord, that is new, they listen to it heedlessly.

مَاmāNotيَأْتِيهِمyatīhimit comes to themمِّنminofذِكْرٍdhik'rina reminder / proofمِّنminfromرَّبِّهِمrabbihimtheir Lord,مُّحْدَثٍmuḥ'dathinnewإِلَّاillāexceptٱسْتَمَعُوهُis'tamaʿūhuthey listened to itوَهُمْwahumwhile theyيَلْعَبُونَyalʿabūna[they] (are at) play (heedless). ﴿٢﴾

[21:3] Their minds are heedless. And the transgressors confer secretly: "Is he not just a human being like you? Would you accept the magic that is presented to you?"*

لَاهِيَةًlāhiyatanDistracted (is)قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts.وَأَسَرُّوا۟wa-asarrūAnd they concealedٱلنَّجْوَىl-najwāthe private conversation,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoظَلَمُوا۟ẓalamū[they] did wrong / transgressed,هَلْhal"Isهَـٰذَآhādhāthisإِلَّاillāexceptبَشَرٌbasharuna human beingمِّثْلُكُمْmith'lukumlike you [all]?أَفَتَأْتُونَafatatūnaSo would you [all] approach / go along ٱلسِّحْرَl-siḥ'rathe magicوَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you [all]تُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūna[you all] see?" ﴿٣﴾

*21:3 Although the Bible (Malachi 3:1) and the Quran (3:81) prophesy the advent of God's Messenger of the Covenant, when he did appear, supported by 'one of the greatest miracles' (74:30-35), he was met with heedlessness and opposition. The divine assertion that every 'new' proof is opposed has been proven by the Arabs' opposition to the Quran's miracle. (App. 1 & 2).

[21:4] He said, "My Lord knows every thought in the heaven and the earth. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient."

قَالَqālaHe said,رَبِّىrabbī"My LordيَعْلَمُyaʿlamuHe knowsٱلْقَوْلَl-qawlathe word / thoughtفِىfīinٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heaven(s)وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth.وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He (is)ٱلسَّمِيعُl-samīʿuthe Hearer,ٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuthe Omniscient." ﴿٤﴾

[21:5] They even said, "Hallucinations," "He made it up," and, "He is a poet. Let him show us a miracle like those of the previous messengers."

بَلْbalNay,قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey said,أَضْغَـٰثُaḍghāthu"Confused dreams / hallucinationsأَحْلَـٰمٍۭaḥlāmin[confused] dreams;بَلِbalinay,ٱفْتَرَىٰهُif'tarāhuhe fabricated it;بَلْbalnay,هُوَhuwahe (is)شَاعِرٌshāʿiruna poet.فَلْيَأْتِنَاfalyatināSo let him bring usبِـَٔايَةٍbiāyatinof a sign / miracleكَمَآkamālike whatأُرْسِلَur'silait was sentٱلْأَوَّلُونَl-awalūna(to) the former [ones] (people)." ﴿٥﴾

[21:6] We never annihilated a believing community in the past. Are these people believers?

مَآmāNotءَامَنَتْāmanat[it] believedقَبْلَهُمqablahumbefore themمِّنminanyقَرْيَةٍqaryatintown / communityأَهْلَكْنَـٰهَآahlaknāhā(which) we destroyed / annihilated it,أَفَهُمْafahumso will theyيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūna[they] believe? ﴿٦﴾

[21:7] We did not send before you except men whom we inspired. Ask those who know the scripture, if you do not know.

وَمَآwamāAnd notأَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentقَبْلَكَqablakabefore youإِلَّاillāexceptرِجَالًاrijālanmen,نُّوحِىٓnūḥīwe revealed / inspiredإِلَيْهِمْilayhimto them.فَسْـَٔلُوٓا۟fasalūSo ask [you all]أَهْلَahla(the) people (of)ٱلذِّكْرِl-dhik'rithe reminder / scripture,إِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] doلَاlānotتَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna[you all] know. ﴿٧﴾

[21:8] We did not give them bodies that did not eat, nor were they immortal.

وَمَاwamāAnd notجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْjaʿalnāhumwe made themجَسَدًاjasadana body / physique / effigyلَّاlānotيَأْكُلُونَyakulūnathey eatٱلطَّعَامَl-ṭaʿāmathe food,وَمَاwamāand notكَانُوا۟kānūthey wereخَـٰلِدِينَkhālidīnaimmortals. ﴿٨﴾

[21:9] We fulfilled our promise to them; we saved them together with whomever we willed, and annihilated the transgressors.

ثُمَّthummaThenصَدَقْنَـٰهُمُṣadaqnāhumuwe fulfilled for themٱلْوَعْدَl-waʿdathe promise,فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُمْfa-anjaynāhumand we saved themوَمَنwamanand whomنَّشَآءُnashāuwe will,وَأَهْلَكْنَاwa-ahlaknāand we destroyed / annihilatedٱلْمُسْرِفِينَl-mus'rifīnathe transgressors. ﴿٩﴾

[21:10] We have sent down to you a scripture containing your message. Do you not understand?

لَقَدْlaqadIndeed,أَنزَلْنَآanzalnāwe sent downإِلَيْكُمْilaykumto you [all]كِتَـٰبًاkitābana book / scriptureفِيهِfīhiin it (is)ذِكْرُكُمْdhik'rukumyour mention / reminder / message.أَفَلَاafalāThen will notتَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou [all] understand? ﴿١٠﴾

[21:11] Many a community we terminated because of their transgression, and we substituted other people in their place.

وَكَمْwakamAnd how manyقَصَمْنَاqaṣamnāwe shattered / utterly destroyed / terminatedمِنminofقَرْيَةٍqaryatina town / communityكَانَتْkānat(that) it wasظَالِمَةًẓālimatandoing wrong,وَأَنشَأْنَاwa-anshanāand we producedبَعْدَهَاbaʿdahāafter themقَوْمًاqawmanpeopleءَاخَرِينَākharīnaothers. ﴿١١﴾

[21:12] When our requital came to pass, they started to run.

فَلَمَّآfalammāThen whenأَحَسُّوا۟aḥassūthey experiencedبَأْسَنَآbasanāour torment / requital,إِذَاidhābehold,هُمhumtheyمِّنْهَاmin'hāfrom itيَرْكُضُونَyarkuḍūnathey flee / run. ﴿١٢﴾

[21:13] Do not run, and come back to your luxuries and your mansions, for you must be held accountable.

لَاlāNotتَرْكُضُوا۟tarkuḍūyou [all] flee / runوَٱرْجِعُوٓا۟wa-ir'jiʿūbut return [you all]إِلَىٰilātoمَآmāwhatأُتْرِفْتُمْut'rif'tumyou [all] were given luxuryفِيهِfīhiin itوَمَسَـٰكِنِكُمْwamasākinikumand to your homes / mansions,لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you [all] mayتُسْـَٔلُونَtus'alūna[you all will] be questioned / accountable. ﴿١٣﴾

[21:14] They said, "Woe to us. We were really wicked."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,يَـٰوَيْلَنَآyāwaylanā"O! Woe to us!إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]كُنَّاkunnāwe wereظَـٰلِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers." ﴿١٤﴾

[21:15] This continued to be their proclamation, until we completely wiped them out.

فَمَاfamāThen notزَالَتzālat[it] ceasedتِّلْكَtil'ka[this]دَعْوَىٰهُمْdaʿwāhumtheir cry / proclamationحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْjaʿalnāhumwe made themحَصِيدًاḥaṣīdanmowed down / wiped out,خَـٰمِدِينَkhāmidīnaextinguished / extinct ones. ﴿١٥﴾

[21:16] We did not create the heavens and the earth, and everything between them just for amusement.

وَمَاwamāAnd notخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heavenوَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earthوَمَاwamāand what (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of themلَـٰعِبِينَlāʿibīna[both] for play / amusement. ﴿١٦﴾

[21:17] If we needed amusement, we could have initiated it without any of this, if that is what we wanted to do.

لَوْlawIfأَرَدْنَآaradnāwe intendedأَنanthatنَّتَّخِذَnattakhidhawe takeلَهْوًاlahwana pastime,لَّٱتَّخَذْنَـٰهُla-ittakhadhnāhusurely we could have taken itمِنminfromلَّدُنَّآladunnāour own,إِنinifكُنَّاkunnāwe wereفَـٰعِلِينَfāʿilīnadoers. ﴿١٧﴾

[21:18] Instead, it is our plan to support the truth against falsehood, in order to defeat it. Woe to you for the utterances you utter.

بَلْbalNay,نَقْذِفُnaqdhifuwe hurl / cast / throwبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truthعَلَىʿalāagainstٱلْبَـٰطِلِl-bāṭilithe falsehood,فَيَدْمَغُهُۥfayadmaghuhuand it knocks it out.فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo behold,هُوَhuwait (is)زَاهِقٌzāhiqunvanishing.وَلَكُمُwalakumuAnd for you [all]ٱلْوَيْلُl-waylu[the] woe مِمَّاmimmāfor whatتَصِفُونَtaṣifūnayou [all] assert / utter. ﴿١٨﴾

[21:19] To Him belongs everyone in the heavens and the earth, and those at Him are never too arrogant to worship Him, nor do they ever waver.

وَلَهُۥwalahuAnd to Him (belongs)مَنmanwhoever (is)فِىfīinٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth.وَمَنْwamanAnd (those) who (are)عِندَهُۥʿindahunear Himلَاlānotيَسْتَكْبِرُونَyastakbirūnathey are arrogantعَنْʿantoعِبَادَتِهِۦʿibādatihiworship Himوَلَاwalāand notيَسْتَحْسِرُونَyastaḥsirūnathey grow weary / tired / waver. ﴿١٩﴾

[21:20] They glorify night and day, without ever tiring.

يُسَبِّحُونَyusabbiḥūnaThey glorify (Him)ٱلَّيْلَal-layla[the] nightوَٱلنَّهَارَwal-nahāraand [the] day,لَاlānotيَفْتُرُونَyafturūnathey tire. ﴿٢٠﴾

[21:21] Have they found gods on earth who can create?

أَمِamiOr haveٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ittakhadhūthey takenءَالِهَةًālihatangodsمِّنَminafromٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth,هُمْhumtheyيُنشِرُونَyunshirūna[they] raise the dead? ﴿٢١﴾

[21:22] If there were in them (the heavens and the earth) other gods beside GOD, there would have been chaos. Glory be to GOD; the Lord with absolute authority. He is high above their claims.

لَوْlawIfكَانَkānathere wereفِيهِمَآfīhimāin both of themءَالِهَةٌālihatungodsإِلَّاillāexcept (besides)ٱللَّهُl-lahuGod,لَفَسَدَتَاlafasadatāsurely it would have been chaos.فَسُبْحَـٰنَfasub'ḥānaSo glorifiedٱللَّهِl-lahi(is) God,رَبِّrabbiLord (of)ٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe Throne عَمَّاʿammāabout whatيَصِفُونَyaṣifūnathey assert / claim. ﴿٢٢﴾

[21:23] He is never to be asked about anything He does, while all others are questioned.

لَاlāNotيُسْـَٔلُyus'aluHe to be askedعَمَّاʿammāabout whatيَفْعَلُyafʿaluHe does,وَهُمْwahumbut theyيُسْـَٔلُونَyus'alūna[they] will be questioned. ﴿٢٣﴾

[21:24] Have they found other gods beside Him? Say, "Show me your proof. This is the message to my generation, consummating all previous messages." Indeed, most of them do not recognize the truth; this is why they are so hostile.

أَمِamiOr haveٱتَّخَذُوا۟ittakhadhūthey takenمِنminfromدُونِهِۦٓdūnihibesides Himءَالِهَةًālihatangods?قُلْqulSay,هَاتُوا۟hātū"Bring / Present [you all]بُرْهَـٰنَكُمْbur'hānakumyour evidence / proof.هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)ذِكْرُdhik'rua reminder / messageمَنman(for those) who (are)مَّعِىَmaʿiyawith me,وَذِكْرُwadhik'ruand a reminder / messageمَنman(for those) whoقَبْلِىqablī(were) before me."بَلْbalButأَكْثَرُهُمْaktharuhummost of themلَاlā(do) notيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna[they] knowٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe truthفَهُمfahumso theyمُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna[those who] are averse / hostile. ﴿٢٤﴾

[21:25] We did not send any messenger before you except with the inspiration: "There is no god except Me; you shall worship Me alone."

وَمَآwamāAnd notأَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentمِنminfromقَبْلِكَqablikabefore youمِنminanyرَّسُولٍrasūlinmessengerإِلَّاillāexceptنُوحِىٓnūḥīwe reveal / inspireإِلَيْهِilayhito himأَنَّهُۥannahuthat thereلَآlā"noإِلَـٰهَilāhagodإِلَّآillāexceptأَنَا۠anāMeفَٱعْبُدُونِfa-uʿ'budūniso worship Me [you all]." ﴿٢٥﴾

[21:26] Yet, they said, "The Most Gracious has begotten a son!" Glory be to Him. All (messengers) are (His) honored servants.

وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they said,ٱتَّخَذَittakhadha"[He] took / begotٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānu(the) Most Graciousوَلَدًاwaladana son."سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥsub'ḥānahuGlorified is He!بَلْbalNay,عِبَادٌʿibādun(they are) servantsمُّكْرَمُونَmuk'ramūnahonored ones. ﴿٢٦﴾

[21:27] They never speak on their own, and they strictly follow His commands.

لَاlāNotيَسْبِقُونَهُۥyasbiqūnahuthey (can) precede Himبِٱلْقَوْلِbil-qawliin [the] word,وَهُمwahumand theyبِأَمْرِهِۦbi-amrihiby His commandيَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūna[they] do / work / act. ﴿٢٧﴾

[21:28] He knows their future and their past. They do not intercede, except for those already accepted by Him, and they are worried about their own necks.*

يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuHe knowsمَاmāwhatبَيْنَbayna between / before*أَيْدِيهِمْaydīhimtheir hands (*before them)وَمَاwamāand what (is)خَلْفَهُمْkhalfahumafter them,وَلَاwalāand notيَشْفَعُونَyashfaʿūnathey (can) intercedeإِلَّاillāexceptلِمَنِlimanifor whomٱرْتَضَىٰir'taḍāHe approved.وَهُمwahumAnd they (are)مِّنْminfromخَشْيَتِهِۦkhashyatihiits fear of itمُشْفِقُونَmush'fiqūnaanxious / concerned [ones]. ﴿٢٨﴾

*21:28 The myth of intercession is Satan's most effective bait (see Appendix 8).

[21:29] If any of them claims to be a god beside Him, we requite him with Hell; we thus requite the wicked.

وَمَنwamanAnd whoeverيَقُلْyaqulhe saysمِنْهُمْmin'humof them,إِنِّىٓinnī"Indeed, I amإِلَـٰهٌilāhuna godمِّنminfromدُونِهِۦdūnihibesides Him."فَذَٰلِكَfadhālikaThen thatنَجْزِيهِnajzīhiwe requite himجَهَنَّمَjahannama(with) Hell.كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusنَجْزِىnajzīwe requiteٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers / wicked [ones]. ﴿٢٩﴾

[21:30] Do the unbelievers not realize that the heaven and the earth used to be one solid mass that we exploded into existence? And from water we made all living things. Would they believe?

أَوَلَمْawalamDo notيَرَyara[he] seeٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوٓا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedأَنَّannathatٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earthكَانَتَاkānatāit wasرَتْقًاratqana joined single entity / one solid mass,فَفَتَقْنَـٰهُمَاfafataqnāhumāthen we tore / ripped / inflated / exploded them both apartوَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāand we madeمِنَminafromٱلْمَآءِl-māi[the] waterكُلَّkullaeveryشَىْءٍshayinthingحَىٍّḥayyinliving?أَفَلَاafalāThen will notيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe? ﴿٣٠﴾

*21:30 The Big Bang Theory is now supported by the Creator's infallible mathematical code (Appendix 1). Thus, it is no longer a theory; it is a law, a proven fact.

[21:31] And we placed on earth stabilizers, lest it tumbles with them, and we placed straight roads therein, that they may be guided.

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we placedفِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthرَوَٰسِىَrawāsiyastabilizers (mountains),أَنanlestتَمِيدَtamīdait spreads / shakes / tumblesبِهِمْbihimwith them,وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāand we madeفِيهَاfīhāthereinفِجَاجًاfijājanbroad passesسُبُلًاsubulan(as) roads,لَّعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayيَهْتَدُونَyahtadūna[they] guide. ﴿٣١﴾

[21:32] And we rendered the sky a guarded ceiling. Yet, they are totally oblivious to all the portents therein.

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe skyسَقْفًاsaqfana ceilingمَّحْفُوظًاmaḥfūẓanguarded.وَهُمْwahumBut they,عَنْʿanfromءَايَـٰتِهَاāyātihāits signs / portentsمُعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna[those who] are turning away / averse / oblivious. ﴿٣٢﴾

[21:33] And He is the One who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; each floating in its own orbit.

وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He (is)ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One whoخَلَقَkhalaqaHe createdٱلَّيْلَal-laylathe nightوَٱلنَّهَارَwal-nahāraand the day,وَٱلشَّمْسَwal-shamsaand the sunوَٱلْقَمَرَwal-qamaraand the moon;كُلٌّkulluneachفِىfīinفَلَكٍfalakinan orbitيَسْبَحُونَyasbaḥūnathey float. ﴿٣٣﴾

[21:34] We never decreed immortality for anyone before you; should you die, are they immortal?

وَمَاwamāAnd notجَعَلْنَاjaʿalnāwe madeلِبَشَرٍlibasharinfor (any) man مِّنminfromقَبْلِكَqablikabefore youٱلْخُلْدَl-khul'da[the] immortality;أَفَإِي۟نafa-inso then ifمِّتَّmittayou die,فَهُمُfahumuthen (would) they (be)ٱلْخَـٰلِدُونَl-khālidūnathe immortals? ﴿٣٤﴾

[21:35] Every soul will taste death, after we put you to the test through adversity and prosperity, then to us you ultimately return.

كُلُّkulluEveryنَفْسٍnafsinsoulذَآئِقَةُdhāiqatutastesٱلْمَوْتِl-mawti[the] death.وَنَبْلُوكُمwanablūkumAnd we test you [all]بِٱلشَّرِّbil-shariwith [the] bad / adversityوَٱلْخَيْرِwal-khayriand [the] prosperity فِتْنَةًfit'natan(as) a test;وَإِلَيْنَاwa-ilaynāand to usتُرْجَعُونَtur'jaʿūnayou [all] will return. ﴿٣٥﴾

[21:36] When those who disbelieve see you, they ridicule you: "Is this the one who challenges your gods?" Meanwhile, they remain totally heedless of the message from the Most Gracious.

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenرَءَاكَraākayou sawٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوٓا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedإِنinnotيَتَّخِذُونَكَyattakhidhūnakathey take youإِلَّاillāexceptهُزُوًاhuzuwan(in) ridicule,أَهَـٰذَاahādhā"Is thisٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoيَذْكُرُyadhkuruhe admonishesءَالِهَتَكُمْālihatakumyour gods?"وَهُمwahumAnd theyبِذِكْرِbidhik'riin (the) mention (of)ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāni(the) Most Graciousهُمْhum[they] (are)كَـٰفِرُونَkāfirūnadisbelievers. ﴿٣٦﴾

[21:37] The human being is impatient by nature. I will inevitably show you My signs; do not be in such a hurry.

خُلِقَkhuliqaHe was originated / createdٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe man / human beingمِنْminofعَجَلٍʿajalinhaste / impatience.سَأُو۟رِيكُمْsa-urīkumI will show you [all]ءَايَـٰتِىāyātīMy signs فَلَاfalāso (do) notتَسْتَعْجِلُونِtastaʿjilūni[you all] be impatient / seek to hurry. ﴿٣٧﴾

[21:38] They challenge: "Where is that (retribution), if you are truthful?"

وَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaAnd they say,مَتَىٰmatā"When (will be fulfilled)هَـٰذَاhādhāthisٱلْوَعْدُl-waʿdu[the] promise,إِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] areصَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful ones?" ﴿٣٨﴾

[21:39] If only those who disbelieve could envision themselves when they try to ward off the fire; off their faces and their backs! No one will help them then.

لَوْlawIfيَعْلَمُyaʿlamu[he] knowsٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedحِينَḥīna(the) timeلَاlā(when) notيَكُفُّونَyakuffūnathey will ward offعَنʿanfromوُجُوهِهِمُwujūhihimutheir facesٱلنَّارَl-nārathe Fireوَلَاwalāand notعَنʿanfromظُهُورِهِمْẓuhūrihimtheir backsوَلَاwalāand notهُمْhumtheyيُنصَرُونَyunṣarūna[they] will be helped! ﴿٣٩﴾

[21:40] Indeed, it will come to them suddenly, and they will be utterly stunned. They can neither avoid it, nor can they receive any respite.

بَلْbalNay,تَأْتِيهِمtatīhimit comes to themبَغْتَةًbaghtatansuddenlyفَتَبْهَتُهُمْfatabhatuhumand it will be dumb-founded / stunned them,فَلَاfalāthen notيَسْتَطِيعُونَyastaṭīʿūnathey are ableرَدَّهَاraddahāto avoid it,وَلَاwalāand notهُمْhumtheyيُنظَرُونَyunẓarūna[they] will be respited / reprieved. ﴿٤٠﴾

[21:41] Messengers before you have been ridiculed, and, consequently, those who ridiculed them incurred the retribution for their ridiculing.

وَلَقَدِwalaqadiAnd verily,ٱسْتُهْزِئَus'tuh'zi-a[he] was mocked / ridiculedبِرُسُلٍbirusulin[in] messengersمِّنminfromقَبْلِكَqablikabefore youفَحَاقَfaḥāqathen he surroundedبِٱلَّذِينَbi-alladhīnaby those whoسَخِرُوا۟sakhirū[they] mocked / ridiculedمِنْهُمmin'humfrom themمَّاmāwhatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toبِهِۦbihiat itيَسْتَهْزِءُونَyastahziūna[they] mocking / ridiculing. ﴿٤١﴾

[21:42] Say, "Who can protect you from the Most Gracious during the night or during the day?" Indeed, they are totally oblivious to the message of their Lord.

قُلْqulSay,مَنman"Whoيَكْلَؤُكُمyakla-ukum[he] protects you [all]بِٱلَّيْلِbi-al-layliin the nightوَٱلنَّهَارِwal-nahāriand the dayمِنَminafromٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāni(the) Most Gracious?"بَلْbalBut,هُمْhumtheyعَنʿanfromذِكْرِdhik'ri(the) remembrance / messageرَبِّهِمrabbihim(of) their Lordمُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna[those who] are turning away / averse / oblivious. ﴿٤٢﴾

[21:43] Do they have gods who can protect them from us? They cannot even help themselves. Nor can they accompany one another when they are summoned to face us.

أَمْamOr areلَهُمْlahumfor them,ءَالِهَةٌālihatungodsتَمْنَعُهُمtamnaʿuhum[it] to protect themمِّنminfromدُونِنَاdūninā[other than] us?لَاlāNotيَسْتَطِيعُونَyastaṭīʿūnathey are ableنَصْرَnaṣrato helpأَنفُسِهِمْanfusihimthemselvesوَلَاwalāand notهُمhumtheyمِّنَّاminnāfrom us / with usيُصْحَبُونَyuṣ'ḥabūnathey will be protected / defended / accompanied. ﴿٤٣﴾

[21:44] We have provided for these people and their ancestors, up until an old age. Do they not see that every day on earth brings them closer to the end? Can they reverse this process?

بَلْbalNay,مَتَّعْنَاmattaʿnāwe gave provisionهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāi(to) theseوَءَابَآءَهُمْwaābāahumand their forefathers / ancestorsحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilطَالَṭālalasted longعَلَيْهِمُʿalayhimufor them,ٱلْعُمُرُl-ʿumuruthe life.أَفَلَاafalāThen do notيَرَوْنَyarawnathey seeأَنَّاannāthat weنَأْتِىnatī[we] come / approach ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthنَنقُصُهَاnanquṣuhāwe diminish / lessen itمِنْminfromأَطْرَافِهَآaṭrāfihāits borders / ends?أَفَهُمُafahumuSo are they ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَl-ghālibūnathe overcomers / victors? ﴿٤٤﴾

[21:45] Say, "I am warning you in accordance with divine inspiration." However, the deaf cannot hear the call, when they are warned.

قُلْqulSay,إِنَّمَآinnamā"OnlyأُنذِرُكُمundhirukumI warn you [all]بِٱلْوَحْىِbil-waḥyiby the revelation / divine inspiration."وَلَاwalāBut notيَسْمَعُyasmaʿu[he] hearsٱلصُّمُّl-ṣumuthe deafٱلدُّعَآءَl-duʿāathe callsإِذَاidhāwhen [in the future]مَاmāthatيُنذَرُونَyundharūnathey will be warned. ﴿٤٥﴾

[21:46] When a sample of your Lord's retribution afflicts them, they readily say, "We were indeed wicked."

وَلَئِنwala-inAnd surely ifمَّسَّتْهُمْmassathum[it] touched / afflicted themنَفْحَةٌnafḥatuna whiff / sampleمِّنْminofعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) punishment / retributionرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord,لَيَقُولُنَّlayaqūlunnasurely they will say,يَـٰوَيْلَنَآyāwaylanā"O! Woe to us!إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكُنَّاkunnā[we] wereظَـٰلِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers / wicked [ones]." ﴿٤٦﴾

[21:47] We will establish the scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection. No soul will suffer the least injustice. Even the equivalent of a mustard seed will be accounted for. We are the most efficient reckoners.

وَنَضَعُwanaḍaʿuAnd we establishٱلْمَوَٰزِينَl-mawāzīnathe scales (of)ٱلْقِسْطَl-qis'ṭathe justiceلِيَوْمِliyawmifor (the) Day (of)ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِl-qiyāmatithe Resurrection,فَلَاfalāso notتُظْلَمُtuẓ'lamu[it] will be wrongedنَفْسٌnafsunany soulشَيْـًٔاshayan(in) anything.وَإِنwa-inAnd ifكَانَkānathere wasمِثْقَالَmith'qālaweight (of)حَبَّةٍḥabbatina seedمِّنْminofخَرْدَلٍkhardalina mustard seedأَتَيْنَاataynāwe broughtبِهَاbihā[of] it.وَكَفَىٰwakafāAnd sufficient / efficientبِنَاbināof usحَـٰسِبِينَḥāsibīna(as) reckoners. ﴿٤٧﴾

[21:48] We gave Moses and Aaron the Statute Book, a beacon, and a reminder for the righteous.

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,ءَاتَيْنَاātaynāwe gaveمُوسَىٰmūsāMosesوَهَـٰرُونَwahārūnaand Aaronٱلْفُرْقَانَl-fur'qānathe Statute (Book)وَضِيَآءًwaḍiyāanand a light / beaconوَذِكْرًاwadhik'ranand a reminderلِّلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous [ones]. ﴿٤٨﴾

[21:49] The ones who reverence their Lord, even when alone in their privacy, and they worry about the Hour.

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيَخْشَوْنَyakhshawnathey reverenceرَبَّهُمrabbahumtheir Lordبِٱلْغَيْبِbil-ghaybiin the unseen / privacy,وَهُمwahumand theyمِّنَminaofٱلسَّاعَةِl-sāʿatithe Hourمُشْفِقُونَmush'fiqūna[those who ] are apprehensive / afraid / anxious. ﴿٤٩﴾

[21:50] This too is a blessed reminder that we sent down. Are you denying it?

وَهَـٰذَاwahādhāAnd this (is)ذِكْرٌdhik'runa reminderمُّبَارَكٌmubārakunone which is blessed,أَنزَلْنَـٰهُanzalnāhu(which) we revealed it.أَفَأَنتُمْafa-antumThen are you [all]لَهُۥlahuof itمُنكِرُونَmunkirūnathose who deny / don't recognize? ﴿٥٠﴾

[21:51] Before that, we granted Abraham his guidance and understanding, for we were fully aware of him.*

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,ءَاتَيْنَآātaynāwe gaveإِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīmaAbrahamرُشْدَهُۥrush'dahuhis guidanceمِنminfromقَبْلُqablubefore,وَكُنَّاwakunnāand we wereبِهِۦbihiabout himعَـٰلِمِينَʿālimīnaknowers / [ones] fully aware. ﴿٥١﴾

*21:51 Was Abraham so smart as to discover God, or, did God grant him the intelligence because He knew that he deserved to be saved? As it turns out, this whole world was created to redeem those among us who deserve redemption. When the angels suggested that all the rebels, humans and jinns, must be banished out of God's kingdom, 'I know what you do not know' (2:30). At the same time, this world proves Satan's incompetence as a god (App. 7).

[21:52] He said to his father and his people, "What are these statues to which you are devoting yourselves?"

إِذْidhWhenقَالَqālahe saidلِأَبِيهِli-abīhito his fatherوَقَوْمِهِۦwaqawmihiand his people,مَاmā"What (are)هَـٰذِهِhādhihitheseٱلتَّمَاثِيلُl-tamāthīlu[the] portrayls / statuesٱلَّتِىٓallatīwhichأَنتُمْantumyou [all]لَهَاlahāto it (are)عَـٰكِفُونَʿākifūna[ones] devoted?" ﴿٥٢﴾

[21:53] They said, "We found our parents worshiping them."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,وَجَدْنَآwajadnā"We foundءَابَآءَنَاābāanāour forefathers / parentsلَهَاlahāof themعَـٰبِدِينَʿābidīnaworshipers." ﴿٥٣﴾

[21:54] He said, "Indeed, you and your parents have gone totally astray."

قَالَqālaHe said,لَقَدْlaqad"Verily,كُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] areأَنتُمْantum[you all]وَءَابَآؤُكُمْwaābāukumand your forefathers / parentsفِىfī(were) inضَلَـٰلٍḍalālinan error / astrayمُّبِينٍmubīninprofound / manifest." ﴿٥٤﴾

[21:55] They said, "Are you telling us the truth, or are you playing?"

قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey said,أَجِئْتَنَاaji'tanā"Did you come to usبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiwith the truth (*truthfully),أَمْamor areأَنتَantayouمِنَminaofٱللَّـٰعِبِينَl-lāʿibīnathose who play?" ﴿٥٥﴾

[21:56] He said, "Your only Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them. This is the testimony to which I bear witness.

قَالَqālaHe said,بَلbal"Nay,رَّبُّكُمْrabbukumyour Lord (is)رَبُّrabbu(the) Lord (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth,ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One whoفَطَرَهُنَّfaṭarahunnaHe created / initiated themوَأَنَا۠wa-anāand I amعَلَىٰʿalātoذَٰلِكُمdhālikumthat [you all]مِّنَminaofٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَl-shāhidīnathe witnesses. ﴿٥٦﴾

[21:57] "I swear by GOD, I have a plan to deal with your statues, as soon as you leave."

وَتَٱللَّهِwatal-lahi"And by Godلَأَكِيدَنَّla-akīdannasurely I will plan (against)أَصْنَـٰمَكُمaṣnāmakumyour idolsبَعْدَbaʿdaafterأَنan[that]تُوَلُّوا۟tuwallūyou [all] go awayمُدْبِرِينَmud'birīna[those] departing / leaving." ﴿٥٧﴾

[21:58] He broke them into pieces, except for a big one, that they may refer to it.

فَجَعَلَهُمْfajaʿalahumSo he made themجُذَٰذًاjudhādhanbroken in piecesإِلَّاillāexceptكَبِيرًاkabīrana large / big (one)لَّهُمْlahumof them,لَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayإِلَيْهِilayhito itيَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūna[they] return. ﴿٥٨﴾

[21:59] They said, "Whoever did this to our gods is really a transgressor."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,مَنman"Whoفَعَلَfaʿala[he] didهَـٰذَاhādhāthisبِـَٔالِهَتِنَآbiālihatināto our gods?إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he (is)لَمِنَlamina[surely] amongٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers / transgressors." ﴿٥٩﴾

[21:60] They said, "We heard a youth threaten them; he is called Abraham."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nā"We heardفَتًىfatana youthيَذْكُرُهُمْyadhkuruhumhe mentions / admonishes / threatens them;يُقَالُyuqāluhe is calledلَهُۥٓlahufor himإِبْرَٰهِيمُib'rāhīmuAbraham." ﴿٦٠﴾

[21:61] They said, "Bring him before the eyes of all the people, that they may bear witness."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,فَأْتُوا۟fatū"Then bring [you all]بِهِۦbihihimعَلَىٰٓʿalābeforeأَعْيُنِaʿyuni(the) eyes (of)ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe peopleلَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayيَشْهَدُونَyashhadūna[they] bear witness." ﴿٦١﴾

[21:62] They said, "Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?"

قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey said,ءَأَنتَa-anta"Have youفَعَلْتَfaʿalta[you] didهَـٰذَاhādhāthisبِـَٔالِهَتِنَاbiālihatināto our godsيَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُyāib'rāhīmuO Abraham?" ﴿٦٢﴾

[21:63] He said, "It is that big one who did it. Go ask them, if they can speak."

قَالَqālaHe said,بَلْbal"Nay,فَعَلَهُۥfaʿalahu[he] did itكَبِيرُهُمْkabīruhumtheir chief / (the) big (one)هَـٰذَاhādhā[this].فَسْـَٔلُوهُمْfasalūhumSo ask them [you all]إِنinifكَانُوا۟kānūthey couldيَنطِقُونَyanṭiqūna[they] speak." ﴿٦٣﴾

[21:64] They were taken aback, and said to themselves, "Indeed, you are the ones who have been transgressing."

فَرَجَعُوٓا۟farajaʿūSo they returned (reflected)إِلَىٰٓilātowardsأَنفُسِهِمْanfusihimthemselvesفَقَالُوٓا۟faqālūand [they] said,إِنَّكُمْinnakum"Indeed, you [all]أَنتُمُantumu[you all] (were)ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَl-ẓālimūnathe wrongdoers / transgressors." ﴿٦٤﴾

[21:65] Yet, they reverted to their old ideas: "You know full well that these cannot speak."

ثُمَّthummaThenنُكِسُوا۟nukisūthey were turned / reversed / revertedعَلَىٰʿalāonرُءُوسِهِمْruūsihimtheir heads (*ideas),لَقَدْlaqad"Verily,عَلِمْتَʿalim'tayou knowمَاmānotهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāitheseيَنطِقُونَyanṭiqūna[they] (can) speak!" ﴿٦٥﴾

[21:66] He said, "Do you then worship besides GOD what possesses no power to benefit you or harm you?

قَالَqālaHe said,أَفَتَعْبُدُونَafataʿbudūna"Then do you [all] worshipمِنminfromدُونِdūnibesidesٱللَّهِl-lahiGodمَاmāwhatلَاlānotيَنفَعُكُمْyanfaʿukumit benefits you [all]شَيْـًٔاshayan(in) anythingوَلَاwalāand notيَضُرُّكُمْyaḍurrukumit harms you [all]? ﴿٦٦﴾

[21:67] "You have incurred shame by worshiping idols beside GOD. Do you not understand?"

أُفٍّuffin"Uffلَّكُمْlakumto you [all]وَلِمَاwalimāand to whatتَعْبُدُونَtaʿbudūnayou [all] worshipمِنminfromدُونِdūnibesidesٱللَّهِl-lahiGod.أَفَلَاafalāThen do notتَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou [all] understand?" ﴿٦٧﴾

[21:68] They said, "Burn him and support your gods, if this is what you decide to do."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,حَرِّقُوهُḥarriqūhu"Burn him [you all]وَٱنصُرُوٓا۟wa-unṣurūand support [you all]ءَالِهَتَكُمْālihatakumyour gods,إِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] areفَـٰعِلِينَfāʿilīnadoers." ﴿٦٨﴾

[21:69] We said, "O fire, be cool and safe for Abraham."*

قُلْنَاqul'nāWe said,يَـٰنَارُyānāru"O fire!كُونِىkūnīBeبَرْدًاbardancool / coldوَسَلَـٰمًاwasalāmanand safeعَلَىٰٓʿalāforإِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīmaAbraham." ﴿٦٩﴾

*21:69 "Cool," without "and safe" would have caused Abraham to freeze.

[21:70] Thus, they schemed against him, but we made them the losers.

وَأَرَادُوا۟wa-arādūAnd they intendedبِهِۦbihifor him,كَيْدًاkaydana plan / schemeفَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُfajaʿalnāhumubut we made themٱلْأَخْسَرِينَl-akhsarīnathe greatest losers. ﴿٧٠﴾

[21:71] We saved him, and we saved Lot, to the land that we blessed for all the people.

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُwanajjaynāhuAnd we delivered himوَلُوطًاwalūṭanand Lotإِلَىilātoٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe landٱلَّتِىallatīwhichبَـٰرَكْنَاbāraknāwe blessedفِيهَاfīhāin itلِلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnafor the worlds / for all people. ﴿٧١﴾

[21:72] And we granted him Isaac and Jacob as a gift, and we made them both righteous.

وَوَهَبْنَاwawahabnāAnd we bestowed / grantedلَهُۥٓlahuto himإِسْحَـٰقَis'ḥāqaIsaacوَيَعْقُوبَwayaʿqūbaand Jacobنَافِلَةًnāfilatan(as an) additional (gift),وَكُلًّاwakullanand each (of them)جَعَلْنَاjaʿalnāwe madeصَـٰلِحِينَṣāliḥīnarighteous [ones]. ﴿٧٢﴾

[21:73] We made them imams who guided in accordance with our commandments, and we taught them how to work righteousness, and how to observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and the obligatory charity (Zakat).* To us, they were devoted worshipers.

وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْwajaʿalnāhumAnd we made themأَئِمَّةًa-immatanleaders / imams,يَهْدُونَyahdūnathey guideبِأَمْرِنَاbi-amrināby our command.وَأَوْحَيْنَآwa-awḥaynāAnd we communicated / inspired / revealed (taught)إِلَيْهِمْilayhimto themفِعْلَfiʿ'la(the) doing (of)ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِl-khayrātithe righteous works,وَإِقَامَwa-iqāmaand establishment / observance (of)ٱلصَّلَوٰةِl-ṣalatithe Contact Prayer (Salat)وَإِيتَآءَwaītāaand giving (of)ٱلزَّكَوٰةِl-zakatithe obligatory charity (Zakat);وَكَانُوا۟wakānūand they wereلَنَاlanāto us,عَـٰبِدِينَʿābidīnaworshipers (of God). ﴿٧٣﴾

*21:73 When the Quran was revealed, all religious duties were already established through Abraham (2:128, 16:123, 22:78).

[21:74] As for Lot, we granted him wisdom and knowledge, and we saved him from the community that practiced abominations; they were wicked and evil people.

وَلُوطًاwalūṭanAnd (to) Lotءَاتَيْنَـٰهُātaynāhuwe gave himحُكْمًاḥuk'manjudgement / authority / wisdomوَعِلْمًاwaʿil'manand knowledge,وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُwanajjaynāhuand we saved himمِنَminafromٱلْقَرْيَةِl-qaryatithe town / communityٱلَّتِىallatīwhichكَانَتkānatit used toتَّعْمَلُtaʿmalu[it] do / practiceٱلْخَبَـٰٓئِثَl-khabāithathe wicked deeds / abominations.إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟kānū[they] wereقَوْمَqawmaa peopleسَوْءٍsawinevil,فَـٰسِقِينَfāsiqīnadefiantly disobedient / wicked [ones]. ﴿٧٤﴾

[21:75] We admitted him into our mercy, for he was righteous.

وَأَدْخَلْنَـٰهُwa-adkhalnāhuAnd we admitted himفِىfīintoرَحْمَتِنَآraḥmatināour mercy.إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heمِنَmina(was) ofٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous [ones]. ﴿٧٥﴾

[21:76] And, before that, Noah called and we responded to him. We saved him and his family from the great disaster.

وَنُوحًاwanūḥanAnd Noah,إِذْidhwhenنَادَىٰnādāhe calledمِنminfromقَبْلُqablubefore,فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاfa-is'tajabnāso we respondedلَهُۥlahuto himفَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُfanajjaynāhuand we saved himوَأَهْلَهُۥwa-ahlahuand his familyمِنَminafromٱلْكَرْبِl-karbithe affliction / disaster,ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmi[the] great. ﴿٧٦﴾

[21:77] We supported him against the people who rejected our revelations. They were evil people, so we drowned them all.

وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُwanaṣarnāhuAnd we helped / supported himمِنَminafromٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmithe peopleٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathe ones whoكَذَّبُوا۟kadhabū[they] denied / rejectedبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآbiāyātināin our signs / revelations.إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟kānū[they] wereقَوْمَqawmaa peopleسَوْءٍsawinevil,فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْfa-aghraqnāhumso we drowned themأَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall. ﴿٧٧﴾

[21:78] And David and Solomon, when they once ruled with regard to someone's crop that was destroyed by another's sheep. We witnessed their judgment.

وَدَاوُۥدَwadāwūdaAnd Davidوَسُلَيْمَـٰنَwasulaymānaand Solomon,إِذْidhwhenيَحْكُمَانِyaḥkumānithey [both] judgedفِىfīconcerningٱلْحَرْثِl-ḥarthithe field / crop,إِذْidhwhenنَفَشَتْnafashatit pasturedفِيهِfīhiin itغَنَمُghanamusheepٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmi(of) the people,وَكُنَّاwakunnāand we wereلِحُكْمِهِمْliḥuk'mihimof their judgmentشَـٰهِدِينَshāhidīnawitnesses. ﴿٧٨﴾

[21:79] We granted Solomon the correct understanding, though we endowed both of them with wisdom and knowledge. We committed the mountains to serve David in glorifying (GOD), as well as the birds. This is what we did.

فَفَهَّمْنَـٰهَاfafahhamnāhāThen we gave understanding and appreciation of itسُلَيْمَـٰنَsulaymāna(to) Solomon,وَكُلًّاwakullanbut (to) eachءَاتَيْنَاātaynāwe gaveحُكْمًاḥuk'manjudgement / authority / wisdomوَعِلْمًاwaʿil'manand knowledge.وَسَخَّرْنَاwasakharnāAnd we subjected / committed to serveمَعَmaʿawithدَاوُۥدَdāwūdaDavidٱلْجِبَالَl-jibālathe mountainsيُسَبِّحْنَyusabbiḥ'nathey to glorifyوَٱلطَّيْرَwal-ṭayraand the birds.وَكُنَّاwakunnāAnd we wereفَـٰعِلِينَfāʿilīnadoers. ﴿٧٩﴾

[21:80] And we taught him the skill of making shields to protect you in war. Are you then thankful?

وَعَلَّمْنَـٰهُwaʿallamnāhuAnd we taught himصَنْعَةَṣanʿata(the) making (of)لَبُوسٍlabūsincoats of armorلَّكُمْlakumfor you [all]لِتُحْصِنَكُمlituḥ'ṣinakumthat it may protect you [all]مِّنۢminfromبَأْسِكُمْbasikumyour war.فَهَلْfahalThen willأَنتُمْantumyou [all]شَـٰكِرُونَshākirūna(be) thankful [ones]? ﴿٨٠﴾

[21:81] For Solomon, we committed the wind gusting and blowing at his disposal. He could direct it as he wished, to whatever land he chose, and we blessed such land for him. We are fully aware of all things.

وَلِسُلَيْمَـٰنَwalisulaymānaAnd to Solomon,ٱلرِّيحَl-rīḥathe windعَاصِفَةًʿāṣifatangusting / blowingتَجْرِىtajrīit flowsبِأَمْرِهِۦٓbi-amrihiby his commandإِلَىilātoٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe landٱلَّتِىallatīwhichبَـٰرَكْنَاbāraknāwe blessedفِيهَاfīhā[in it].وَكُنَّاwakunnāAnd we wereبِكُلِّbikulliin everyشَىْءٍshayinthingعَـٰلِمِينَʿālimīnaknowers. ﴿٨١﴾

[21:82] And of the devils there were those who would dive for him (to harvest the sea), or do whatever else he commanded them to do. We committed them in his service.

وَمِنَwaminaAnd ofٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِl-shayāṭīnithe devilsمَنman(were some) whoيَغُوصُونَyaghūṣūna[they] diveلَهُۥlahufor himوَيَعْمَلُونَwayaʿmalūnaand [they] doعَمَلًاʿamalanworksدُونَdūnaother thanذَٰلِكَdhālikathat.وَكُنَّاwakunnāAnd we wereلَهُمْlahumof themحَـٰفِظِينَḥāfiẓīnaguardians. ﴿٨٢﴾

[21:83] And Job implored his Lord: "Adversity has befallen me, and, of all the merciful ones, You are the Most Merciful."

وَأَيُّوبَwa-ayyūbaAnd Job,إِذْidhwhenنَادَىٰnādāhe imploredرَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis Lord,أَنِّىannī"Indeed, [I]مَسَّنِىَmassaniya[it] touched / afflicted meٱلضُّرُّl-ḍuruthe adversity,وَأَنتَwa-antaand You (are)أَرْحَمُarḥamuMost Merciful (of)ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَl-rāḥimīnathe merciful ones." ﴿٨٣﴾

[21:84] We responded to him, relieved his adversity, and restored his family for him, even twice as much. That was a mercy from us, and a reminder for the worshipers.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاfa-is'tajabnāSo we respondedلَهُۥlahuto himفَكَشَفْنَاfakashafnāand we removedمَاmāwhatبِهِۦbihi(was) on himمِنminofضُرٍّḍurrin(the) adversity.وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُwaātaynāhuAnd we gave himأَهْلَهُۥahlahuhis familyوَمِثْلَهُمwamith'lahumand (the) equivalent / likeness / same as themمَّعَهُمْmaʿahumwith themرَحْمَةًraḥmatan(as) mercyمِّنْminfromعِندِنَاʿindinā[by] us,وَذِكْرَىٰwadhik'rāand a reminderلِلْعَـٰبِدِينَlil'ʿābidīnafor the worshipers. ﴿٨٤﴾

[21:85] Also, Ismail, Idrîs, Zal-Kifl; all were steadfast, patient.

وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَwa-is'māʿīlaAnd Ismailوَإِدْرِيسَwa-id'rīsaand Idrisوَذَاwadhāand Dhā / possessor ofٱلْكِفْلِl-kif'liAl-Kifl / the portion / the responsibility (*Ezekiel)كُلٌّkullunallمِّنَmina(were) amongٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَl-ṣābirīnathe steadfast ones. ﴿٨٥﴾

[21:86] We admitted them into our mercy, for they were righteous.

وَأَدْخَلْنَـٰهُمْwa-adkhalnāhumAnd we admitted themفِىfīinرَحْمَتِنَآraḥmatināour mercy.إِنَّهُمinnahumIndeed, theyمِّنَmina(were) ofٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous [ones]. ﴿٨٦﴾

[21:87] And Zan-Noon (Jonah, "the one with an 'N' in his name"), abandoned his mission in protest, thinking that we could not control him. He ended up imploring from the darkness (of the big fish's belly): "There is no god other than You. Be You glorified. I have committed a gross sin."

وَذَاwadhāand Dhā / possessor ofٱلنُّونِl-nūniAl-Noon / the "N" (*Jonah) إِذidhwhenذَّهَبَdhahabahe went / departedمُغَـٰضِبًاmughāḍiban(while in) a state of displeasure / irritation / angerفَظَنَّfaẓannaand he thoughtأَنanthatلَّنlanneverنَّقْدِرَnaqdirawe (can) decree / controlعَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon him.فَنَادَىٰfanādāThen he calledفِىfīinٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِl-ẓulumātithe darknessأَنanthat,لَّآlā"(There is) noإِلَـٰهَilāhagodإِلَّآillāexceptأَنتَantaYou,سُبْحَـٰنَكَsub'ḥānakaGlory be to You!إِنِّىinnīIndeed, [I]كُنتُkuntuI wasمِنَminaofٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers." ﴿٨٧﴾

[21:88] We responded to him, and saved him from the crisis; we thus save the believers.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاfa-is'tajabnāSo we respondedلَهُۥlahuto him,وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُwanajjaynāhuand we saved himمِنَminafromٱلْغَمِّl-ghamithe distress / crisis.وَكَذَٰلِكَwakadhālikaAnd thusنُـۨجِىnunjīwe saveٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers. ﴿٨٨﴾

[21:89] And Zachariah implored his Lord: "My Lord, do not keep me without an heir, though You are the best inheritor."

وَزَكَرِيَّآwazakariyyāAnd Zachariah,إِذْidhwhenنَادَىٰnādāhe calledرَبَّهُۥrabbahu(to) his Lord,رَبِّrabbi"My Lord!لَاlā(Do) notتَذَرْنِىtadharnīYou leave meفَرْدًاfardanalone without offspring,وَأَنتَwa-antawhile You (are)خَيْرُkhayru[the] Best (of)ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَl-wārithīnathe inheritors." ﴿٨٩﴾

[21:90] We* responded to him and granted him John; we fixed his wife for him. That is because they used to hasten to work righteousness, and implored us in situations of joy, as well as fear. To us, they were reverent.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاfa-is'tajabnāSo we respondedلَهُۥlahuto him,وَوَهَبْنَاwawahabnāand we bestowed / grantedلَهُۥlahuto himيَحْيَىٰyaḥyāJohn,وَأَصْلَحْنَاwa-aṣlaḥnāand we cured (fixed)لَهُۥlahufor himزَوْجَهُۥٓzawjahuhis wife.إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟kānū[they] used toيُسَـٰرِعُونَyusāriʿūna[they] hastenفِىfīinٱلْخَيْرَٰتِl-khayrātithe righteous works,وَيَدْعُونَنَاwayadʿūnanāand they implore usرَغَبًاraghaban(in) hope / longing / joyوَرَهَبًاwarahabanand fear,وَكَانُوا۟wakānūand they wereلَنَاlanāto us,خَـٰشِعِينَkhāshiʿīnareverent ones. ﴿٩٠﴾

*21:90 The use of the plural tense throughout the Quran indicates participation of the angels. It is clear from 3:39 and from the Bible that the angels dealt with Zachariah extensively, as they gave him the good news about John. See Appendix 10.

[21:91] As for the one who maintained her virginity, we blew into her from our spirit, and thus, we made her and her son a portent for the whole world.

وَٱلَّتِىٓwa-allatīAnd she whoأَحْصَنَتْaḥṣanatshe guarded / maintainedفَرْجَهَاfarjahāher chastity,فَنَفَخْنَاfanafakhnāso we breathedفِيهَاfīhāinto herمِنminfromرُّوحِنَاrūḥināour spirit,وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَاwajaʿalnāhāand we made herوَٱبْنَهَآwa-ib'nahāand her sonءَايَةًāyatana sign / portentلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnafor the worlds / whole world. ﴿٩١﴾

[21:92] Your congregation is but one congregation, and I alone am your Lord; you shall worship Me alone.

إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰذِهِۦٓhādhihithis (is)أُمَّتُكُمْummatukumyour congregationأُمَّةًummatancongregationوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatanone,وَأَنَا۠wa-anāand I amرَبُّكُمْrabbukumyour Lord,فَٱعْبُدُونِfa-uʿ'budūniso worship Me [you all]. ﴿٩٢﴾

[21:93] However, they divided themselves into disputing religions. All of them will come back to us (for judgment).

وَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟wataqaṭṭaʿūBut they cut off / dividedأَمْرَهُمamrahumtheir affairبَيْنَهُمْbaynahumamong them(selves),كُلٌّkullunallإِلَيْنَاilaynāto usرَٰجِعُونَrājiʿūnaones returning. ﴿٩٣﴾

[21:94] As for those who work righteousness, while believing, their work will not go to waste; we are recording it.

فَمَنfamanThen whoeverيَعْمَلْyaʿmal[he] doesمِنَmina[of]ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥāti[the] righteous worksوَهُوَwahuwawhile he (is)مُؤْمِنٌmu'minuna believerفَلَاfalāthen notكُفْرَانَkuf'rāna(will be) covered / rejectedلِسَعْيِهِۦlisaʿyihi[for] his effort.وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, we (are)لَهُۥlahuof itكَـٰتِبُونَkātibūnarecorders. ﴿٩٤﴾

[21:95] It is forbidden for any community we had annihilated to return.

وَحَرَٰمٌwaḥarāmunAnd forbiddenعَلَىٰʿalāuponقَرْيَةٍqaryatina city / communityأَهْلَكْنَـٰهَآahlaknāhā(which) we destroyed it,أَنَّهُمْannahumthat [they]لَاlānotيَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūnathey return. ﴿٩٥﴾

[21:96] Not until Gog and Magog reappear,* will they then return - they will come from every direction.

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntilإِذَاidhāwhen [in the future]فُتِحَتْfutiḥatit (will be) opened,يَأْجُوجُyajūjuGogوَمَأْجُوجُwamajūjuand Magog,وَهُمwahumand theyمِّنminfromكُلِّkullieveryحَدَبٍḥadabindirectionيَنسِلُونَyansilūna[they] will be fruitful in progeny / reproduce / descend. ﴿٩٦﴾

*21:96 By the year 2270 AD, thanks to God's mathematical miracle in the Quran (Appendix 1), America will be the heart of Submission, and billions around the globe will have believed in the Quran (9:33, 41:53, 48:28, 61:9). Gog and Magog (allegorical names of villainous communities), will be the only bastions of heathenism, and they will attack the submitters. That is when the world will end (15:87, 18:94, Appendix 25). Gog and Magog are mentioned in 18:94 & 21:96, 17 verses before the end of each sura; this may indicate the time of their appearance.

[21:97] That is when the inevitable prophecy will come to pass, and the disbelievers will stare in horror: "Woe to us; we have been oblivious. Indeed, we have been wicked."

وَٱقْتَرَبَwa-iq'tarabaAnd [it] approachedٱلْوَعْدُl-waʿduthe promiseٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaquthe inevitableفَإِذَاfa-idhāthen behold / whenهِىَhiya[it] (are)شَـٰخِصَةٌshākhiṣatunstaring in horrorأَبْصَـٰرُabṣāru(the) eyes (of)ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelieved,يَـٰوَيْلَنَاyāwaylanā"O! Woe to us!قَدْqadVerily,كُنَّاkunnāwe wereفِىfīinغَفْلَةٍghaflatinheedlessnessمِّنْminofهَـٰذَاhādhāthis.بَلْbalNay,كُنَّاkunnāwe wereظَـٰلِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers / wicked [ones]." ﴿٩٧﴾

[21:98] You and the idols you worship besides GOD will be fuel for Hell; this is your inevitable destiny.

إِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you [all]وَمَاwamāand whatتَعْبُدُونَtaʿbudūnayou [all] worshipمِنminfromدُونِdūnibesides ٱللَّهِl-lahiGod (are)حَصَبُḥaṣabufuel (of)جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell.أَنتُمْantumYou [all]لَهَاlahāto itوَٰرِدُونَwāridūna[ones who] (will) come / arrive / descend. ﴿٩٨﴾

[21:99] If those were gods, they would not have ended up in Hell. All its inhabitants abide in it forever.

لَوْlawIfكَانَkāna[it] wereهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāitheseءَالِهَةًālihatangods,مَّاmānotوَرَدُوهَاwaradūhāthey (would have) came / arrived / descended to it.وَكُلٌّwakullunAnd allفِيهَاfīhāthereinخَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna[ones] abiding forever. ﴿٩٩﴾

[21:100] They will sigh and groan therein, and they will have no access to any news.

لَهُمْlahumFor themفِيهَاfīhāthereinزَفِيرٌzafīrunsigh / moanوَهُمْwahumand theyفِيهَاfīhāthereinلَاlānotيَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūna[they] hear. ﴿١٠٠﴾

[21:101] As for those who deserved our magnificent rewards, they will be protected from it.

إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathoseسَبَقَتْsabaqatit precededلَهُمlahumfor themمِّنَّاminnāfrom usٱلْحُسْنَىٰٓl-ḥus'nāthe best (rewards),أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathoseعَنْهَاʿanhāfrom itمُبْعَدُونَmub'ʿadūna(will be) those kept far away. ﴿١٠١﴾

[21:102] They will not hear its hissing. They will enjoy an abode where they can get everything they desire, forever.

لَاlāNotيَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnathey hearحَسِيسَهَاḥasīsahā(the) slightest sound of it (hissing)وَهُمْwahumand theyفِىfīinمَاmāwhatٱشْتَهَتْish'tahat[it] desiredأَنفُسُهُمْanfusuhumtheir soulsخَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna[ones] abiding forever. ﴿١٠٢﴾

[21:103] The great horror will not worry them, and the angels will receive them joyfully: "This is your day, that has been promised to you."

لَاlāNotيَحْزُنُهُمُyaḥzunuhumu[it] will grieve themٱلْفَزَعُl-fazaʿuthe terror / horrorٱلْأَكْبَرُl-akbaru[the] greatest,وَتَتَلَقَّىٰهُمُwatatalaqqāhumuand [it] will meet themٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe angels,هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)يَوْمُكُمُyawmukumuyour dayٱلَّذِىalladhīwhichكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] wereتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūna[you all] promised." ﴿١٠٣﴾

[21:104] On that day, we will fold the heaven, like the folding of a book. Just as we initiated the first creation, we will repeat it. This is our promise; we will certainly carry it out.

يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayنَطْوِىnaṭwīwe will foldٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heavenكَطَىِّkaṭayyilike (the) rolling / folding (of)ٱلسِّجِلِّl-sijilithe scroll / bookلِلْكُتُبِlil'kutubifor the records / of the books.كَمَاkamāJust asبَدَأْنَآbadanāwe initiatedأَوَّلَawwala(the) firstخَلْقٍkhalqincreationنُّعِيدُهُۥnuʿīduhuwe will repeat it,وَعْدًاwaʿdana promiseعَلَيْنَآʿalaynāupon us.إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]كُنَّاkunnāwe wereفَـٰعِلِينَfāʿilīna(the) doers. ﴿١٠٤﴾

[21:105] We have decreed in the Psalms, as well as in other scriptures, that the earth shall be inherited by My righteous worshipers.

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,كَتَبْنَاkatabnāwe wroteفِىfīinٱلزَّبُورِl-zabūrithe Psalmsمِنۢminfromبَعْدِbaʿdiafterٱلذِّكْرِl-dhik'rithe mention / message,أَنَّannathatٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthيَرِثُهَاyarithuhā[it] will inherit itعِبَادِىَʿibādiyaMy servants,ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَl-ṣāliḥūnathe righteous [ones]. ﴿١٠٥﴾

[21:106] This is a proclamation for people who are worshipers.

إِنَّinnaIndeed,فِىfīinهَـٰذَاhādhāthisلَبَلَـٰغًاlabalāghansurely is a proclamationلِّقَوْمٍliqawminfor a people,عَـٰبِدِينَʿābidīnaworshipers. ﴿١٠٦﴾

[21:107] We have sent you out of mercy from us towards the whole world.

وَمَآwamāAnd notأَرْسَلْنَـٰكَarsalnākawe sent youإِلَّاillābutرَحْمَةًraḥmatan(as) a mercyلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnafor the worlds / whole world. ﴿١٠٧﴾

[21:108] Proclaim, "I have been given divine inspiration that your god is one god. Will you then submit?"

قُلْqulSay,إِنَّمَاinnamā"Onlyيُوحَىٰٓyūḥāit is revealed / (divinely) inspiredإِلَىَّilayyato meأَنَّمَآannamāthat onlyإِلَـٰهُكُمْilāhukumyour god (is)إِلَـٰهٌilāhungodوَٰحِدٌwāḥidunone;فَهَلْfahalso willأَنتُمantumyou [all] (be) مُّسْلِمُونَmus'limūnasubmitters?" ﴿١٠٨﴾

[21:109] If they turn away, then say, "I have warned you sufficiently, and I have no idea how soon or late (the retribution) will come to you.

فَإِنfa-inBut ifتَوَلَّوْا۟tawallawthey turned awayفَقُلْfaqulthen say,ءَاذَنتُكُمْādhantukum"I made known / announced to you [all]عَلَىٰʿalāuponسَوَآءٍsawāinequal / equitable.وَإِنْwa-inAnd notأَدْرِىٓadrīI knowأَقَرِيبٌaqarībunwhether (it is) nearأَمamorبَعِيدٌbaʿīdunfarمَّاmāwhatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou [all] are promised. ﴿١٠٩﴾

[21:110] "He is fully aware of your public utterances, and He is fully aware of everything you conceal.

إِنَّهُۥinnahu"Indeed, Heيَعْلَمُyaʿlamu[He] knowsٱلْجَهْرَl-jahrathe public utteranceمِنَminaofٱلْقَوْلِl-qawli[the] speechوَيَعْلَمُwayaʿlamuand He knowsمَاmāwhatتَكْتُمُونَtaktumūnayou [all] conceal. ﴿١١٠﴾

[21:111] "For all that I know, this world is a test for you, and a temporary enjoyment."

وَإِنْwa-in"And notأَدْرِىadrīI know,لَعَلَّهُۥlaʿallahuthat perhaps it (is)فِتْنَةٌfit'natuna trial / testلَّكُمْlakumfor you [all],وَمَتَـٰعٌwamatāʿunand an enjoymentإِلَىٰilāforحِينٍḥīnina time (temporary)." ﴿١١١﴾

[21:112] Say, "My Lord, Your judgment is the absolute justice. Our Lord is the Most Gracious; only His help is sought in the face of your claims."

قَـٰلَqālaHe said / Say,رَبِّrabbi"My Lord!ٱحْكُمuḥ'kumjudgeبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiwith the truth (*truthfully).وَرَبُّنَاwarabbunāAnd our Lord (is)ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānuMost Gracious,ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُl-mus'taʿānuthe One who is sought for helpعَلَىٰʿalāagainstمَاmāwhatتَصِفُونَtaṣifūnayou [all] assert / claim." ﴿١١٢﴾
